The very first SWEat Homecoming Spirit Sprint is a 5k fundraiser for the Barbara Kettle Gunlach Shelter Home as well as our MTU Society of Women Engineers (SWE) section. This event takes place on Homecoming; September 20 on Walker Lawn. Registration starts at 8:00 AM and the race starts at 9:00 AM. The cost is $10 for pre-registration and $15 for the day-of. 3. Electrifying Step Afrika!
Heart-pounding entertainment arrives at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on September 13 with Step Afrika!, an electrifying, percussive dance company dedicated to the tradition of stepping. The Washington, D.C. dance troop will close the Parade of Nations, Michigan Technological University’s week-long multicultural celebration, with a brief, sneak performance at Dee Stadium. Tickets for the full 7:30 pm performance at the Rozsa Center are $18 for adults and $9 for youth. Tickets can be purchased at the Rozsa Center, through the ticket office at 906-487-2073, or online at www.rozsa.tickets.mtu.edu.
More than just a dance show, Step Afrika! performances also integrate songs, storytelling, humor and even audience participation. Darnishia Slade, Interim Director for International Programs and Services at Michigan Tech, notes, “What’s really exciting about this group is they invite people from the audience on stage to teach them moves. They’re high-energy and very engaging. This is a show for people of all ages. It’s a perfect way to celebrate the international community that’s here in the Keweenaw.”
Founded in 1994, Step Afrika! is the world’s first professional dance company dedicated to the uniquely American art of stepping. Historically Black fraternities and sororities originated the dazzling dance form that uses the body as an instrument to produce complex rhythms and sounds through clapping, footsteps and vocalization. The troupe is known as global ambassadors for stepping and its use as an educational and inspirational tool for youth. The group has performed on stages in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean.

4. Film Board Showing – X-Men: Days of Future Past
This week Film Board is showing “X-Men: Days of Future Past” in Fisher 135. It will be shown on: Friday, September 12, at 8:30 PM, and 11:30 PM; Saturday, September 13, at 2:30 PM, 5:30 PM, 8:30 PM, and 11:30 PM; and Sunday, September 14, at 2:30 PM and 5:30 PM. Tickets are $3 each and concessions are $1 per item. Next weekend Film Board will be showing “22 Jump Street”.

6. Noted Peace Activist, Arun Gandhi, at the Rozsa Center
Arun Gandhi, a world-renowned peace activist and grandson of Indian spiritual leader Mahatma Gandhi, will share memories of his grandfather and his own perspective on justice, during an evening lecture on Friday, September 12, at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. An Evening with Arun Gandhi is presented in partnership with the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) and coincides with the 25th anniversary celebration of Michigan Technological University’s annual Parade of Nations, a festival that celebrates worldwide culture. The 7:30 p.m. lecture is free and open to the public.
Arun Gandhi grew up under the apartheid laws of South Africa where he faced beatings from both black and white peers. Although he initially sought vengeance, he instead came to embrace the non-violent life lessons he learned from his grandfather. He now dedicates his life to sharing this message of peace throughout the world. Arun Gandhi is the primary leader of India’s independence movement, whose name has become synonymous with integrity, courage, hope, and non-violent civil disobedience.
An Evening with Arun Gandhi is part of the Social Justice Lecture Series, launched by the Center for Diversity and Inclusion in 2012. Guest lecturers present topics that encourage critical thinking, provoke healthy debate and challenge assumptions. According to Darnishia Slade, Interim Director of International Programs and Services at Michigan Tech, Gandhi fit well with the series. “His message and story will serve as an inspiration for students and community members. We’re very fortunate to host such a prominent and influential speaker.”

7. Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Class Offered
Rape Aggression Defense started on Tuesday, September 9. Master self-defense tactics and safety techniques through a comprehensive course designed specifically for women ages twelve and up. It begins with a focus on awareness, prevention, and risk reduction/avoidance, and progresses to the basics of hands-on defense training. The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:00 -8:00 PM, until October 2, in SDC Racquetball Court #5. Cost per 4-week session is $50 for general public, $30 for students.
R.A.D. is offered by Michigan Tech’s Department of Public Safety and Police Services through Community Programs, and the course is taught by Public Safety officers. The class combines both classroom instruction and hands on physical training.

10. Parade of Nations Event
Parade of Nations and Multicultural Festival in Houghton on Saturday, September 13, 2014
IPS is inviting you to join us for the parade and march under your country flag. The parade will being on Quincy Street in downtown Hancock. It will cross the bridge and move east on Shelden Avenue through downtown Houghton, ending at the Dee Stadium for the Multicultural Festival. Also, transportation will be provided from Houghton to Hancock by the Houghton Motor Transit Line. Pick up location is the Memorial Union Building. The first bus will depart at 9:30 AM and the last pick-up will be at 10:35 am. We hope you are able to join us and represent your country in the parade!

11. Youth Dance Program Looking for Instructors
The Youth Dance Program at Michigan Tech Community Programs is looking for qualified teaching assistants for the current semester. This is a volunteer role, but has the possibility to transition to a paid primary teacher position for spring semester.

16. “Undie-rock” duo The Skivvies strip down at the Rozsa Center
New York-based comedy-pop duo The Skivvies bring their stripped-down tunes – and torsos – to the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on September 20 at 7:30pm. Presented in partnership with Michigan Technological University’s Student Entertainment Board, the underwear-clad pair serve up unexpected, slightly risqué mash-ups and unique arrangements of hip hop, pop hits, Broadway show tunes, R & B songs and standards for mature audiences. Doors open at 7pm. Award-winning performers Lauren Molina and Nick Cearley became YouTube sensations with their genre-busting covers of artists including Robyn, Carole King and Rhianna. The nearly au naturel duo soon began selling out live venues around New York and fielding requests from stars of stage and screen who wanted to disrobe and join them on stage. The pair have made appearances on NBC and filmed a pilot for the A&E network. Named the “Most Playful Performers” by People Magazine, the Skivvies were hailed by The Wall Street Journal as “smart, sophisticated … ingenious.” Mary Muncil, Interim Director of the Rozsa Center describes their performance as “stripped-down, eclectic cover songs with a dash of comedy mixed in. Add the acoustic sounds of cello, ukulele, glockenspiel and melodica – and, of course, the lack of clothing – and you have a completely unique experience, for mature audiences only.”

18. Constitution Day Volunteer Readers Welcome
