8. Bold New Camelot Comes to Rozsa Center
Local fourth grader makes professional debut as Tom of Warwick
The national tour of Lerner & Lowe’s legendary musical, Camelot, arrives at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts for one night only on October 21 at 7:30 PM. This bold new interpretation of the four-time Tony Award-winning Broadway musical tells the story of King Arthur, Guinevere and Lancelot. Houghton Elementary fourth grade student Tom Knewtson, who auditioned in September, appears at the end of Act Two as Tom of Warwick. Tickets to Camelot are $22 for adults and $11 for youth 17 and under. Michigan Tech student tickets are free with the Experience Tech Fee.The production is a sumptuous, visually arresting reimagining of the time-honored fable of chivalry, majesty and romance. “This is sort of a reinvention of Camelot. It’s the story as you’ve never seen it before,” said Rozsa Center Interim Director Mary Muncil. “This version is a darker, grittier, more dramatic rendition. Never has this story been more captivating.” The story tells of King Arthur, who rules his kingdom with new ideals, bringing peace to a troubled land. But, when his beautiful new Queen Guinevere and the dashing Sir Lancelot, his most trusted knight, give in to their passion for one another, one of the most fabled love triangles of all time ensues.
Although this is 10-year-old Knewtson’s debut at the Rozsa, his previous credits include Michael Darling (Peter Pan), Longtail (Snow White) and a shepherd (Best Christmas Pageant Ever) at the Broadway Theatre in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Tom is a dream role for a young actor: a boy destined to become a knight, who inspires Arthur and gives him hope for the future. The original 1960 production of Camelot ran on Broadway for 873 performances and spawned several revivals, foreign productions and the 1967 film. Phoenix Entertainment, by special arrangement with Tams-Witmark Music Library, Inc., is producing the North American tour. For tickets, go online, or call Ticketing Operations at Michigan Tech’s Student Development Complex (SDC), 906-487-2073, or visit in person at 600 MacInnes Drive, Houghton.
