Registration is Open for the Breakers to Bridge Paddle Festival

A 10 mile paddle race to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of the Outdoor Adventure Program will take place on Saturday, September 10 with other activities happening on the 9th and 11th.

Registration is $35 for a single and $55 for tandem/canoes. Price for both categories increase $10 the week of event. Registration includes all aid stations, support on the course, a T-Shirt for each paddler, Finisher Medalian, Timing, Participant Shuttle, and more!

Khana Khazana to Feature Iranian Cuisine

Food from Iran is featured at Friday’s Khana Khazana. Serving is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the food truck in the MUB circle across from the Library.

The menu includes:

Cutlet (Kotlet)—ground beef, potatoes, eggs, breadcrumbs and spices, formed into patties and fried.
Fereni—Persian pudding with milk, rice four, rose water and pistachios
Sekanjebin— a mint syrup drink

The cost is $6.95 for the full meal.


Sunset-Cruise

Sunset Cruise Tickets for the August 4th Cruise Available

There are tickets available to students for the Copper Harbor Sunset Cruise on the evening of Thursday, August 4. Tickets are $5.00 per person with your student ID. Family is welcome to attend with a student but must also pay the $5.00 fee.

Please come to Student Activities, MUB 112, to purchase tickets. The office is open Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Volunteers needed for the Keweenaw Science & Engineering Festival

The 2nd annual Keweenaw Science and Engineering Festival is coming up this August 3-6th, and we need your help to make it another success! Volunteers are needed for various tasks over several days and all help is appreciated whether it is 2 hours or 3 days! Please help us in our mission to spark a local interest in STEM by presenting the most compelling, exciting and educations Festival in the Upper Peninsula! Details for each event’s needs are listed below and lunch will be provided for volunteers. Visit us online for a complete schedule of events and we hope you can help us this year!

Below is a list of events we need volunteers help with:

Thursday, August 4

Volunteers needed 10:30 am-3:30 pm – 20 Volunteers needed for Family Engineering Day (Houghton’s Kestner Waterfront Park, Lunch Provided)  (Event runs 12:00 -3:00pm)
Ask volunteers to contact Joan Chadde at jchadde@mtu.edu if they want to assist (provide: Name, Major, Email, Cell #, & whether you’ve presented before)

  • They will be running the hands on demonstrations for preschool students and assisting with set up, clean up and packing up demonstrations after.

Volunteers needed 6:00-10:30 pm – 3 Volunteers needed for the Science Pub Crawl (Downtown Houghton) (Event runs 7:00 – 10:00 pm)

  • Run the KSEF info booth to provide full KSEF schedule, hand out wristbands and collect entry forms – 2 people
  • program assistance, clean-up at each location – 1 person
Friday, August 5 

Volunteers needed 11:00 am – 4:30 pm – 5 Volunteers needed for Science in Health & Sports Day (Houghton’s Kestner Waterfront Park)  (Event runs 12:00-4:00 pm)
  • Set up tables and demos, assisting with demos – 2 people
  • Run the KSEF info booth to provide full KSEF schedule, hand out wristbands and collect entry forms – 2 people
  • program assistance, checking ahead on set up for next speaker, assist with clean-up at each location – 1 person
Volunteers needed 5:00 – 8:30 pm – 5 Volunteers needed for Teen Science Night (Houghton’s Kestner Waterfront Park)  (Event runs6:00-8:00 pm)
  • Set up, assisting with running the Teen Engineering challenges (instructions provided) – 4 people
  • Run the KSEF info booth, clean-up – 1 person

Saturday, August 6

10:00 am – 4:30 pm – 10 Volunteers needed for STEM in the Keweenaw and Mind Trekkers Expo! (Houghton’s Kestner Waterfront Park)  (Event runs 12-4pm)
  • Set up tables and demos, assisting with demos (lesson plans provided!) – 8 people
  • Run the KSEF info booth to provide full KSEF schedule, hand out wristbands and collect entry forms – 1 people
  • program assistance, clean-up at each location – 1 person

SDC Multi Purpose Room Closed July 26-August 7

The SDC multipurpose room is closed now through August 7 for floor refinishing.

The wood gym will be available for open recreation activities that were scheduled in the multipurpose room with one exception. The wood gym will be closed Wednesday, Aug. 3 from noon to 2 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. for basketball camp and no open recreation will be available during these times.

K-Day 2016 Application Now Available

K-Day, short for Keweenaw Day, is an annual tradition at Michigan Tech held on the Friday of the week of Labor Day. Each year on K-Day, classes release at noon so our students can celebrate their beautiful surroundings in the Keweenaw Peninsula and learn about ways to get involved and connected at Tech.
