Cardboard Boats!
What better way to celebrate Homecoming than by watching students race boats made out of cardboard? The races will take place at 4 p.m. Friday, September 28 at the Houghton Waterfront
Park.
There will be free bus shuttles starting at 3 p.m. to and from the Cardboard Boat races. The shuttles will end when everyone waiting for a shuttle has been returned at the end of the races. The continuous loop route will make stops at the Student Development Complex (SDC), Memorial Union Building (MUB) bus stop and Houghton Waterfront Park.

Superior Wind Symphony Concert
Bring your lawn chairs, bring your blankets: The Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts and Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents a concert by the Superior Wind Symphony (
SWS), titled “Europe, America and the World,” a celebration of the music of WW1 era band leader from Harlem, James Reese Europe. They will perform a free outdoor concert on the Walker lawn on Friday, September 28, at 6:00 pm. If it rains, the concert will be held inside the McArdle Theatre, 2nd floor Walker.

Homecoming Tailgate!
Come support the Huskies with free FOOD and FUN at the Homecoming Tailgate from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, September 29.
You can mingle with homecoming court, eat free food, play yard games and so much more. There will also be free beer with a valid ID. Students need their HuskyCard ID to get into the game and the tailgate party. Anyone with a game ticket can get into the tailgate.

2nd Annual Starkey Hearing Foundation Golf Scramble
The sisters of Delta Zeta are hosting their 2nd Annual Starkey Hearing Foundation Charity Golf Scramble on September 29, 2018 at 11 am. The Starkey Hearing Foundation is a non-profit organization that promotes awareness for speech and hearing and raises money to provide high quality 
hearing aids to people around the world through various missions. Each year, more than 100,00 hearing aids are delivered through more than 100 missions. Help us support the cause by coming out to our golf scramble! The event will be a 9-hole scramble including a longest drive contest, closest to pin contest, hole-in-one prizes, and team prizes!

Design Thinking and Innovation Workshop for Faculty, Staff, and Students
Learn how to address challenges and introduce changes by using the Design Thinking process. Developed at Stanford’s d.school, the Design Thinking process can be applied to everything from redesigning the classroom experience to redesigning your life. Get your creativity flowing and start “ideating” while you learn the processes involved with design thinking and team innovation. 
The workshop will be held in The Alley makerspace (located in the basement of the MUB) on Tuesday, October 2nd from 7 – 9 pm. Michigan Tech faculty, staff, and students can register to participate in the workshop by filling out this short form.
The Design Thinking Workshop is hosted by the Innovation Center for Entrepreneurship and facilitated by Mary Raber, assistant dean of the Pavlis Honors College, with the help of Michigan Tech University Innovation Fellows.

25th Anniversary of the Visual and Performing Arts Department
This academic year (2018-19) we will be celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Visual and Performing Arts Department at Michigan Tech. We will hold a celebratory 25th Anniversary Gala on Saturday, October 6th, at 5:30 pm at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. Celebrate 25 years of the Visual and Performing Arts Department at Michigan Tech with an evening of cocktails, dinner, and live arts entertainment. The VPA 25th Anniversary Gala will feature intimate performances in the lobby and on stage, and live auction supporting the Marian and John Irish Award for Environmental Art, the Visual and Performing Arts Department Theatre Scholarship Fund, and the Rozsa Center’s Class Acts Program. Come dressed for celebration! There will be a cash bar, cocktail hour, full dinner, live music throughout the evening both in the lobby and on stage, an auction of unique arts experiences, artists working during the gala, and more.

Make a Difference Day Registration
Make a Difference Day, the largest national day of community service takes place on Michigan Tech’s campus every fall. Students, faculty, and staff come together to go out into the community to volunteer and make a difference.
Make a Difference Day 2018 will be taking place Saturday, October 20. Check-In will start at 9:00 AM in the MUB Commons. Information packets will be distributed and participants will receive their Make a Difference Day T-Shirts before traveling to their service locations.

Are you up for a Halloween challenge? Come join the Michigan Tech Army ROTC program in our inaugural Husky Alpine Run, on Saturday, October 27th, which is a 5 km trail race ON Mont Ripley! Don’t ski? Don’t snowboard? No worries. Many people enjoy skiing and snowboarding the slopes of Ripley and now you get to r
un them! We encourage everyone to show up and run in their Halloween costume as prizes are awarded to the costume contest winner! All racers will get complementary food and beverages after the event and there will also be raffle prizes. The winners of each age group (male and female) will receive medals, and the overall male and female winners will get their names engraved on a plaque that will be posted in the ROTC building. Registration for the 12th Annual D80 Conference is now open
The D80 Conference is a dialog and celebration of our efforts to solve issues that confront the world’s poorest 80%. The Michigan Tech campus hosts this annual conference in the fall every year to give a platform to the voices of university students serving communities in need, both domestically and abroad. Our conferences highlight service and research work done by students from Michigan Tech and elsewhere, and are open to anybody interested in development, design, and discovery for the poorest 80% of humanity. The public is always welcome.
The theme for the annual D80 Conference is Connect, Collaborate, Create! We are very excited to welcome Erna Grasz, co-Founder of the Asante Africa Foundaiton, as our featured keynote speaker.
The 2018 conference will be held Saturday, October 13th in the MUB. Registration is now open. More information regarding the conference and registration can be found at mtu.edu/honors/D80/conference. The deadline to register for D80 is Friday, September 30th.

Social Justice Series
University Marketing and Communications at Michigan Tech is looking for student groups to run temporary takeovers of its Snapchat account. UMC is seeking your help in identifying responsible and outgoing students in your organization who would be willing to run a Snapchat takeover. The benefit to you? Raising student awareness about Michigan Tech in general and about your organization in particular.
The university Snapchat coordinator, Ben Jaszczak, works with campus groups like yours to organize awareness-raising Snapchat takeovers targeted to current and future Huskies. With over 2,000 followers, our Snapchat account is a great way to reach undergraduate and prospective students.
To run a Snapchat takeover, all you need to do is identify a student(s) who is willing to run the takeover and choose a time slot of 1-3 days where they can highlight your program or event. With that information, contact us at video@mtu.edu to schedule your takeover. At-Risk for Students Course
College can be stressful at times, and Michigan Tech wants to empower our students with t
he resources they need to help one another. We’re excited to present the Kognito simulation At-Risk for Students course, which will help in recognizing signs of distress, determining if a friend needs help, how to talk to someone in need of help, or where you or your friend can turn to for resources. It can be difficult to deal with these kinds of issues, but an effective conversation can help more than you think-it can help change someones life. We hope you enjoy this simulation, as we all work together to help one another and build a stronger community.
Kognito is an online training simulation to help students learn how to talk to others in need and help in a crisis situation using role playing.

A new and exciting offer in the line-up of adult group fitness classes – Tai Chi!
Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese exercise combining relaxed fluid movements with a calm, alert mental state, is low impact and puts minimal stress on muscles and joints, making it safe for all ages and fitness levels.
