As you may be aware, the initial LeaderShape Institute application deadline was Monday, November 14th. With a handful of LeaderShape Institute spots remaining, we have decided to extend the application deadline on a rolling basis. We will continue to accept applications until we have reached a full LeaderShape cohort for the January session. Apply now to save your spot for this life-changing leadership retreat!

Through this program you will strive to:

• Commit to identifying core personal values and act in ways that are congruent with those values
• Through self-awareness and reflection, identify the ways social positionality informs perspective, reactions, and interactions
• Develop relationships that honor the dignity of individuals and groups in the context of equity and social systems
• Create a community-oriented vision that addresses critical social and global issues, embracing a healthy disregard for the impossible.

Community Development – Chillos Valley, Ecuador

In collaboration with the Manna Project International, this year’s international alternative spring break trip will work with community organizers in a focus area selected by the group.

All programs seek to “create communities of young leaders that help break the cycle of poverty in underserved communities around the world.” Our group will be able to select a focus area that aligns with our group’s interests. Focus area options include education, health, sports and recreation, business, agriculture, and the environment.

This trip will depart on Friday, March 3, 2023, and fly to our destination for a Saturday arrival. Both lodging and food will be provided by our host organization. Cultural immersion experiences, educational opportunities, and group reflection will be incorporated throughout the week. The group will depart from Ecuador on Saturday, March 11th, and return to campus the following day.

This trip can accommodate up to eleven students. Due to support from the Student Activity Fee, this trip will only cost $825 per student which includes food, travel, accommodations, and program materials. Any individual expenses related to passports or other travel necessities will be the responsibility of the student.

In collaboration with the Highland Support Project and Partners in Service, this year’s domestic alternative spring break trip will travel to Pinetop-Lakeside, AZ to work with the Apache Nation. Their programs are primarily based on struggles for food, water, and housing sovereignty. Our group will specifically assist with agricultural projects pertaining to the tribe’s horticulture and produce enterprise, Ndee Bikiyaa, including the planning and building of infrastructures such as raised garden beds and cisterns.

This trip will depart on Friday, March 3, 2023, in a Michigan Tech 15-passenger van. Participants will stay in an Airbnb Cabin near the volunteer site. Most meals will be prepared and provided by the group itself. Cultural immersion experiences, educational opportunities, and group reflection will be incorporated throughout the week. The group will depart from Arizona on Saturday, March 11th, and return to campus the following day.

This trip can accommodate up to nine students. Due to support from the Student Activity Fee, this trip will only cost $350 per student which includes all food, travel, accommodations, and program materials.

The Student Development Complex Center will have shortened hours over Thanksgiving Break, November 18 – 27, 2022. Normal Building hours will resume on Monday, November 28.

Join Mind Trekkers on Tuesday, December 13th as we welcome 8th-grade students from across the Western UP to campus for the Copper Trail Festival! This event will feature hands-on STEM demonstrations to spark curiosity and showcase career opportunities. Departments, student organizations, and local businesses are invited to participate in the event as exhibitors and volunteers. Mind Trekkers demonstrations can be supplied for student organizations who would like to have a presence at the event!

The event will take place in the SDC Varsity Gym from 9 am – 2:30 pm. Lunch will be provided to all exhibitors and volunteers. It is the first of four festivals in the OneUP Mind Trekkers Tour, a collaboration with UP Michigan Works! and the MiSTEM Network.

Each summer for over 50 years Michigan Tech Summer Youth Programs (SYP) has welcomed over a thousand youths from grades 6-11 to campus from across the country and around the world. We need your help to ensure they experience the Michigan Tech community we all know and love.

SYP students come for week-long, hands-on, experiential learning in one (or more) of our 50+ week-long explorations in STEM, Humanities, and Law. During their time at SYP, students gain confidence in their ability to be successful in college as they experience residential life, responsibility in arriving to class on time, and exploring the beauty of the Keweenaw Peninsula. 

We’re looking for passionate individuals who enjoy working with youth and want to inspire the next generation of doers and makers. Each year we hire 50+ undergraduate and graduate students for a variety of rewarding experiences enabling them to build their capacity in leadership, communication, and critical interpersonal skills.

It is that time of the year again! As you head home for Thanksgiving break, take 30-minutes to renew your FAFSA for the 2023-24 academic year. 

Filing your FAFSA will allow you to be considered for federal, state, and university grants & scholarships, loans, and work-study positions. 
You can file your FAFSA online at studentaid.gov.

To file your FAFSA, you and your parent/guardian will need your FSA ID, 2021 tax information, and assets at the time of FAFSA filing. Michigan Tech’s federal school code is 002292.
