Summer Service Opportunities

Several community members have reached out to SLI requesting assistance with summer projects. Have some extra time? Give back to the Keweenaw community this summer!

Projects include:

  • Helping a lovely, elderly gentleman and his wife with yard clean up and perhaps some painting projects. He is located in Keweenaw Bay (about 20 minutes south on US 41) and would have all of the tools necessary to complete the work. They are open to any prearranged date and time. He estimated 3-6 volunteers would be ideal for a couple hours of work- more are welcome, but the projects will be finished faster.
  • The Hanka Homestead is preparing to open over Memorial Weekend. In advance of opening, they are hoping to rebuild 300-400 feet of split rail cedar fencing. They are hoping to have a group of 4-5 individuals assist over a few days or perhaps a larger group over a day or two. Supplies will be provided and we can provide work gloves for any volunteers as well.

If you’re interested in supporting either of these projects individually or as a group email us at huskyhelpers@mtu.edu and we can get you in contact!

A new organization focusing on revitalizing our communities is also seeking volunteers for their two summer project days: July 29th and August 12th. These are full days of service from ~8AM-3PM. Breakfast, lunch, a t-shirt, and all necessary supplies are provided. Sign-up is available on GivePulse at the preceding links.

GSG Softball League Registration Open

Sign up now to register a team or to register as an individual. Individuals without a team will be assigned a team for the season. All MTU and community members are welcome, the only stipulation is that 50% of the team is MTU students, faculty, or staff.

Registration closes at 11:59 p.m. on May 23rd. League will run from Thursday nights starting June 1st and ending on Saturday, July 29th with a picnic and playoff tournament. All are welcome to play as we will have a preseason Softball clinic and Captain’s meeting to go over the rules and techniques of softball.

K-Day Registration

Ahoy there! Are you ready to set sail? If so, then it’s time to grab your captain’s hat because K-Day Registration is officially open!

Reserve your spot now! Space and resources are limited, so do not delay!  This year’s theme will have you sailing around at K-Day!  Organizations can get creative with this nautical-themed student organization fair!

K-Day, or Keweenaw Day, is an annual tradition that will be held on Friday, September 8 beginning at noon. Students head to Chassell Centennial Park for an afternoon of food, fun, and music – it’s like a day out at sea!  K-day typically sees 3000-4000 students so this is an important recruitment opportunity for your organization.  Please have your organization’s event finalized before registering HERE.

Keep in mind, the person you list as the primary contact for your organization’s registration will be the one receiving all communications.  They will need to keep an eye out for emails during the summer, in case of any changes that are made to K-Day due to any updates we may need to make.

Questions about K-Day can be directed to Leah Joy at rso@mtu or call 906-487-1963.
