Student Leadership and Involvement is hiring!

Are you a proactive and dynamic student looking for an exciting opportunity? Look no further! Student Leadership and Involvement is currently hiring for a student worker position. This position is only for work-study students. In this role, you can anticipate providing general office assistance such as answering the phone, emails, and questions, assisting with managing social media and assisting the staff in the office. Cram Jam Study Break Snack

ATTENTION all students: Are you hungry? Do you need a break from studying and finals? The Alumni Engagement Office has you covered! Fuel your brain with trail mix at the library on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, from 2-3:30 p.m. (or until supplies last). Don’t miss out on a study time treat and a free reusable snack bag. 

New Alumni Welcome Event

The Office of Alumni Engagement is hosting a brief New Alumni Welcome immediately following commencement rehearsal on Friday, December 15 in the SDC Multipurpose Room for our Midyear 2023 graduates. Plan to sign the class banner, receive an alumni welcome gift, and be sure to save room for a treat or two!

Finals Week with the Van Pelt and Opie Library 

The end of the semester often comes with a lot of stress. The Library wants to help! Along with campus partners, we are planning things to help ease that stress, take much-needed breaks, and tackle your studies. 

  • Pet Photos: Enjoy pictures of you and your friends’ pets up on our digital displays while you study. Submit a photo here by the morning of Dec. 8. – First and Second Floors, Library
  • Brain Break Stations: give your brain some time off with games, coloring, snacks, and other odds and ends to fidget with. – First and Second Floors, Library
  • Pet Therapy: Spend time with trained therapy dog teams for adorable destressing. Dec. 7,8, & 11 3-5 pm & Dec. 10, 1-3pm- First Floor, Library
  • Snacks: Multiple groups, including Student Mental Health and Wellbeing, will be in the library at various times with snacks to keep you fueled and your brain powered up. First, Library
  • Pancake Dinner: Up late studying? Grab some pancakes served up by campus administrators and staff. Dec. 10, 7-9pm – First Floor, Library

Enigma Variations Presented by Michigan Tech Music

British composer, Edward Elgar, wrote his Enigma Variations as a tribute to 14 dear friends, including his bulldog, Dan. Each movement represents the character and personality of the friend. The most well-known song is Nimrod, played yearly on Remembrance Sunday at The Cenotaph in London.

The Rozsa box office will be closed throughout winter break, from Dec. 18 until Jan. 8. It will reopen for normal business hours — Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — on Jan. 8.

Tickets for upcoming events can still be purchased online throughout winter break.


GSG Open Skate

Enjoy some winter fun ice skating with GSG! Join GSG for one of two 1-hour graduate student open skate blocks at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena in the SDC.

Date: Sunday, December 10 from 4-5PM and 5-6PM.

Rental skates and head protection are available, but must be reserved on sign-up due to limited availability.

Xi Sigma Pi Silent Auction

Xi Sigma Pi Forestry Honors Society is hosting a silent auction in the U.J. Noblet Forestry Building Admin hallway (hallway behind the main atrium) on December 8th from 9:00 am to 6:30 pm. This is a great opportunity to find gifts for your friends and family! 

Auction Details:

  • All bids will be done in person on paper, with a name and email required alongside the bid amount (higher than the last bid value).
  • All winners will be announced the following Monday, December 11th. Emails will be sent to all winners. 
  • All proceeds will be directed to Xi Sigma Pi to support their annual research symposium for topics in natural resources, as well as maple leaves for new member induction. 

Waino Wahtera Center for Student Success is hiring!

The Wahtera Center has opened the application process for OES. Are you looking for something to do this summer? Do you want to stay in the Houghton area to enjoy all the beauty that Keweenaw County has to offer during the summer months? Have you wanted experience planning and executing a large program like Orientation? Are you thinking that you really should be doing an internship this summer but don’t know what to do or where to go for an internship? You can use the experiences that you will have planning OTL Training Week and O-Week. It is a great opportunity to have one of the largest student-planned and student-run programs on campus under your belt. We are looking for students who are hardworking, creative, and self-motivated, and who are excited to bring the New Huskies to campus!  Applications close December 15, 2023.

Have something lined up for this summer but you can be back for Fall Training starting August 10? Apply to be Orientation Team Leader (OTL). We are looking for students from all areas to help lead our incoming class of Huskies! You will need to be on campus from August 10-August 16 for Training, August 16-18 for help with move-in, and O-Week is from August 18- August 24. We will also have 1 more meet and greet with students in September. Applications Will close on January 22, 2024.

Being part of orientation is not something you can swing this summer, that is okay we are looking for individuals who are motivated, organized, and have a commitment to help other Huskies find their path to success. We have Success Coaches, ExSEL Peer Mentors and Success Course Peer Assistants open as well. Applications will close on January 22, 2024.

Register here to pitch your business model and market opportunity to a team of judges, potentially win prizes, and get feedback to help you move forward with your idea.  We will meet on 1/24/24 from 5-7:30 pm in the MUB Ballroom A. Guidelines and a pitch rubric will be shared with you after you have registered. 


Calling All Nominations for the Bayard Rustin Award

The nomination deadline for the Bayard Rustin Award has been extended to Friday, December 8.  Student submissions will be accepted until 5 PM. Nominate an MTU faculty or staff member here

Bayard Rustin was an influential advisor to civil rights leaders, doing much of the work behind the scenes. The Bayard Rustin Award is presented to a Michigan Tech faculty or staff member who is a major asset to students, faculty, and staff. They frequently provide major support behind the scenes and exhibit the qualities of being a servant leader.  This year’s award will be presented at the 35th Annual MLK Celebration on January 15, 2024, @ 10 AM in the MUB Ballroom.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Events

’24 MLK Library Exhibit:

The Van Pelt Opie Library and The Center for Diversity and Inclusion is proud to present the MLK Library Exhibit featuring students’ posters. The purpose of the Exhibit is to give students the opportunity to reflect on Dr. King’s contribution to the social justice cause. 

Eligibility: Participants must be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at Michigan Technological University. 

Student Groups may also submit one poster per group. NOTE: This does not restrict individual members from submitting a poster they designed. Individual members can still submit their own poster design.

How to enter: Students must complete all required sections of the Google form. If submitting a physical poster, please drop off to CDI.

MLK Reading Day:

In need of volunteer hours for the spring semester? Stay warm and read inside to local grade school classes about the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, January 15, 2024 from 10 AM – 3 PM for MLK Day.

MLK Interfaith Prayer Vigil:

The Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) and the Cooperative Campus Ministry are

organizing an Interfaith Prayer Vigil and Reflection on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (MLK Day), Monday, January 15, 2024 at noon in the Van Pelt and Opie Library’s East Reading Room. We invite students, faculty, and staff from all faiths to share a prayer, personal reflection or excerpt from one of King’s prayers, sermons or speeches.

MLK Peace March:

Following the MLK Interfaith Prayer Vigil, we invite the campus community to gather at the Husky statue at 1 p.m. for a peace march across campus to honor Dr. King and solidify our campus’ commitment to his life and work ensuring justice and equity for all.
