Become a Hero: Donate Blood on February 13-14
Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. They don’t wear capes or special suits, and their badge of honor is the bandage that shows they gave the gift of life.
You are invited to become a hometown hero and answer the call of patients in need by donating blood on February 13-14 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the MUB Ballroom. This blood drive is sponsored by the Order of Omega Greek Honor Society.
Donating blood is one of the simplest things a person can do to help save a patient’s life. For the hour it takes to give blood, there could be a whole community of people thankful for another birthday given to their loved one.
To make an appointment or to learn more, download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767), or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device. Completion of a RapidPass® online health history questionnaire is encouraged to help speed up the donation process. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App. A blood donor card, driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds, and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.
Free Professional Headshots for Students at Career Fair
The Office of Alumni Engagement is offering free professional headshots for students at the 2024 Spring Career Fair. A photographer from Brockit Inc. will be taking photographs on February 13, 2024, from 12-4 p.m. in the SDC (left-hand side of the main entrance).
Photos will be taken first come, first served. Each student will take (1) test shot and then will have a limit of (3) posed shots.
Please sign up if you intend to utilize this free service. RSVP in advance is strongly encouraged. The deadline to sign up is 4 p.m. on Monday, February 12, 2024. Photos will be emailed a few weeks after the Career Fair.

Undergraduate Student Government
Nominations for USG Executive Board and At-Large Representatives are open until Sunday, February 11th at 5PM. Please submit a nomination or two for someone you believe would represent the student body well as the USG President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, or At-Large Representative. Below are the responsibilities for each position:
● The President is responsible for appointing committee chairs and liaisons, speaking and advocating on behalf of the Undergraduate Student Government, and sets a vision for USG.
● The Vice President chairs USG meetings and the Personnel committee, oversees committee chairs, and serves as the office manager.
● The Treasurer oversees the disbursement of Student Activity Fee funds, keeps track of the USG budget, and chairs the Ways and Means committee.
● The Secretary takes minutes at USG meetings, sets the agenda for meetings, and supervises USG elections.
● At-Large Representatives hold the entire student assembly as their constituency.
USG members must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.25 and be in good conduct standing. Additionally, Eboard members serve as Ways and Means committee members. If you are nominated for a position and do not meet the GPA or conduct requirements, you will not be eligible to run.
USG members are required to hold 3 office hours per week and join a standing committee, all of which meet weekly. Additionally, members attend weekly meetings on Wednesdays from 7-9PM. Executive board members attend a weekly Eboard meeting and meet weekly with an advisor.
Nominations will be accepted until 5pm on Sunday, February 11th. Candidates are required to attend a mandatory election information session, either on Tuesday, February 13th at 6PM or Thursday, February 15th at 4PM. Elections will open at 8am on Monday, February 19th, and close at 5pm on Sunday, February 25th. New members will be sworn in at the meeting on Wednesday, March 27th at 7pm. Free Film & Free Food: The Seeds of Vandana Shiva on February 15 in Fisher 138
The Sustainability Film & Discussion Series, coordinated by the Michigan Tech Office of Sustainability & Resilience, will present The Seeds of Vandana Shiva on Thursday, February 15, in Fisher 138 on Michigan Tech’s campus. Everyone is welcome to attend. Films are free. A suggested $5 donation is appreciated. Free refreshments provided by the Keweenaw Co-op.
The Seeds of Vandana Shiva explores the interconnectedness of seeds, food, environment, and social justice through the remarkable life story of the Gandhian eco-activist and agro-ecologist, Vandana Shiva. The film shows how the battle against multinational agribusiness has become an international struggle between two opposing visions for feeding the world: a multinational corporate model of chemically-dependent monoculture that rewards a capitalist imperative of profit and growth, or ‘Earth Democracy, promoted by Dr. Shiva that honors ecology, biodiversity, sustainability and community.
The film series provides an opportunity for people of diverse ages, backgrounds and life experiences to engage in meaningful discussion facilitated by local experts on the topic.
Rachael Pressley, Western UP Food Systems Collaborative and Senior Regional Planner for the Western U.P. Planning & Development Region (WUPPDR) and MTU student Abraham Stone (Biological Sciences) will facilitate the discussion.

Registration for Session 2 Spring Adult Aquatics Programs is now open!
- Adult Huskies Swim Training (18 or older) – provides additional attention and competitive guidance to swimmers ages 18 and older who are looking to improve their swimming skills and fitness levels in a group setting.
- Adult Huskies Swim Lessons (18 or older) – aquatic education for the beginner to the intermediate swimmer who is looking to become more comfortable in the water and learn the fundamental four strokes.

Learn About a New Electrical and Computer Engineering Student Exchange Program
The ECE department at Michigan Tech has established an undergraduate and graduate student exchange program with the College of IT and Engineering at Kyungpook National University in Daegu, South Korea. The exchange program is available for students to begin applying to attend for the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters.
Kyungpook National University has courses offered in English across several departments, but students in the ECE department will be preferred if spots are limited.

Women in Physics is now offering a scholarship for any graduate student who is committed to supporting women and gender minorities in their field!
The awardee will receive $2,000 for the 2024-2025 academic year.

To apply, the applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Be a graduate student at MTU for the entire 2024-2025 academic year
- Commit to supporting women and gender minorities in their field
- Provide a Statement of Purpose
- If awarded, agree to become an active member of Women in Physics

Volunteers will be leading Mind Trekker demonstrations – hands-on STEM demonstrations to allow middle school students to explore STEM at their own pace. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and an enthusiasm for learning.
Never heard of Mind Trekkers before? Mind Trekkers is a nationally-acclaimed traveling STEM roadshow bringing high-energy, hands-on, STEM festivals to communities around the country. As a Mind Trekker, you’ll help guide participants through demonstrations that showcase the awe and power of science through experimentation. From being inside a bubble to skewering a balloon without popping it, to making ice cream with liquid nitrogen – Mind Trekkers serves to bring communities together to support an educational ecosystem and strong future workforce in STEM.
Travel, lodging, and a daily stipend are provided.
