Become a Hero: Donate Blood on February 13-14

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. They don’t wear capes or special suits, and their badge of honor is the bandage that shows they gave the gift of life.

You are invited to become a hometown hero and answer the call of patients in need by donating blood on February 13-14 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the MUB Ballroom. This blood drive is sponsored by the Order of Omega Greek Honor Society.

Donating blood is one of the simplest things a person can do to help save a patient’s life. For the hour it takes to give blood, there could be a whole community of people thankful for another birthday given to their loved one.

To make an appointment or to learn more, download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767), or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device. Completion of a RapidPass® online health history questionnaire is encouraged to help speed up the donation process. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App. A blood donor card, driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds, and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.

Free Film & Free Food: The Seeds of Vandana Shiva on February 15 in Fisher 138

The Sustainability Film & Discussion Series, coordinated by the Michigan Tech Office of Sustainability & Resilience, will present The Seeds of Vandana Shiva on Thursday, February 15, in Fisher 138 on Michigan Tech’s campus. Everyone is welcome to attend. Films are free. A suggested $5 donation is appreciated. Free refreshments provided by the Keweenaw Co-op.

The Seeds of Vandana Shiva explores the interconnectedness of seeds, food, environment, and social justice through the remarkable life story of the Gandhian eco-activist and agro-ecologist, Vandana Shiva. The film shows how the battle against multinational agribusiness has become an international struggle between two opposing visions for feeding the world: a multinational corporate model of chemically-dependent monoculture that rewards a capitalist imperative of profit and growth, or ‘Earth Democracy, promoted by Dr. Shiva that honors ecology, biodiversity, sustainability and community.

The film series provides an opportunity for people of diverse ages, backgrounds and life experiences to engage in meaningful discussion facilitated by local experts on the topic.

Rachael Pressley, Western UP Food Systems Collaborative and Senior Regional Planner for the Western U.P. Planning & Development Region (WUPPDR) and MTU student Abraham Stone (Biological Sciences) will facilitate the discussion.

Use this link to access the list of upcoming films and this link for the list of films available for checkout from the Office of Sustainability & Resilience in Room 203 of the Van Pelt Library.

Film sponsors include: Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Keweenaw Land Trust, Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative, Friends of the Land of Keweenaw, WUP MiSTEM, MTU Great Lakes Research Center, Departments of Social Sciences, and Civil, Environmental & Geospatial Engineering, Center for Science & Environmental Outreach, College of Forest Resources & Environmental Science, Keweenaw Co-op, Sustainability Demonstration House, Students for Sustainability, and Keweenaw Youth for Climate Action.
