Student Leadership Award Nominations close on March 10th at midnight!
All we need is you! Student Leadership and Involvement (SLI) is seeking nominations for the President’s Award for Leadership, Dean of Students Award for Possibilities, the William and Josephine Balconi Community Service Award, and a variety of other awards to recognize the efforts and achievements of our amazing Michigan Tech community.
This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize and celebrate members of our community and some of their incredible achievements! Please visit the Student Leadership Awards webpage for more information. Click on an individual title to read more about the award and its requirements, then complete and submit the nomination form. You can submit nominations in multiple categories, as well. Please take a minute to nominate a standout student, student organization, or advisor today!
The recipient of each award will be honored at the 30th Annual Student Leadership Awards Ceremony at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 12, 2024, in the Memorial Union Ballroom. Nominators are warmly encouraged to attend, also.

GRIT Workshop
G.R.I.T. is an interactive, half-day leadership workshop designed to help you develop in the areas of motivation, perseverance, habit formation, and goal setting. Through a variety of activities, each individual will come to understand more about themselves and how they can achieve individual success. The skills learned can aid students in working towards any aspiration – from leading their student organization to increasing their GPA to running a marathon. Come join your peers as together we gain resilience and inspire tenacity!
G.R.I.T. is held once a semester. The fall session will be held on Sunday, March 24th, 2023, from 1:00 PM-4:30 PM. Limited space is available as every participant will receive free program materials, snacks, and a gift.

Teams Needed for 2024 Event to Benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters
Invest some of your time in POTENTIAL and you can change the World “Little” by “Little”. Stand with Big Brothers Big Sisters at the Copper Country Bowl for Kids’ Sake – mobilize your team, come up with a catchy team name, create costumes & props – or join us as you are and just have fun! Bowl for Kids’ Sake is a fun way to support kids in our community with your friends, family and colleagues. The 30th Copper Country Bowl for Kids’ Sake is scheduled to take place on Saturday – March 16, 2024 with bowling sessions starting at Noon, 2:30PM, and 5PM at the Mine Shaft in Houghton. Please consider joining us for a Fun-Filled Day for a Great Cause!
This is your Call to Action to stand up for Kids in our Community today! This event is a fundraiser to support Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mentoring programs for children in the local communities. All of the proceeds support life-changing mentoring relationships for local kids. This event is not about the bowling; it’s about having fun for a good cause, so anyone can participate. All you have to do is raise a minimum of $45 per bowler and then you’re eligible for two hours of bowling, free pizza, great prizes and a lot of fun. If you can “spare” a little bit of time for a lot of FUN… YOU can be a part of Bowl for Kids’ and Be a Force for Change in our community.

Triangle Fraternity Philanthropy Event
Triangle’s holding our yearly philanthropy stream, Extra Life, from 6pm this Friday to 10am Saturday. We’ll be playing video games and hanging out for 16 hours straight (game schedule below) and we’ll be holding donation challenges like Hot Ones, ice bath, and the One Chip Challenge.
All donations go to Hurley’s Children’s Hospital. Please consider donating as well to give us challenges to complete.

2024 Doghouse Classic 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament – Register Now
The Doghouse Classic is an original Michigan Tech event that saw its beginnings over 30 years ago under the direction of Kevin Borseth, head women’s basketball coach at the time. The tournament will take place in the SDC Multipurpose Room on six competition courts. The number of teams registered will determine the number of divisions and the tournament format for each division. The preferred format will be a double-elimination bracket. Tournament brackets will not be available until the day of the tournament. Tournament Details:Divisions: Boys and girls divisions for grade levels 4-8, JV, Varsity, and Men’s and Women’s Opens (includes Intramural teams).
Cost: $120* per team (four players per team)

This tournament is an excellent opportunity to have some fun playing 3-on-3 basketball in a friendly yet competitive environment. Prizes will be awarded for division champs, and event swag will be available for all participants!

WIBIT Wednesday
MTU Students, SDC Access Pass Holders (minimum 1-month), and WIBIT Wednesday Pass Holders, come make a splash with our inflatable pool obstacle course called the WIBIT!
Events will be held this spring for current MTU Students and SDC Access Pass Holders (minimum 1-month). Not a current student or SDC Access Pass Holder? Purchase a WIBIT Wednesday Pass (space is limited)!
Test your skills on the course or challenge your friend to a race across the obstacles.
The course is set up in the deep water and requires users to be able to pass our swim test.

There are many different pieces of the WIBIT and each event will have a featured combination.
Potential featured pieces include:
- ”The Step” – This piece allows users to climb up onto the course.
- ”The Base” – Users must make their way across a horizontal surface. Be careful how fast you move as it can get slippery!
- ”The Cliff” – Users must navigate either side of a slope using the handles and their balancing skills.
- ”V-Connect” – Users must use limited footing space to navigate across the horizontal structure.
- ”The Bridge” – Users must navigate up and over an arched structure without falling through.
- ”The Slope” – Users must climb up a 6-foot wall that leads to a slide into the pool water below!

MTU Needs Student Opinions!
Michigan Tech University is updating its Hazard Mitigation Plan. Student feedback will help us better understand your hazard concerns and help us identify mitigation activities that should help lessen the impact of future hazard events, including the impacts of climate change. Please help us by completing this survey by March 15, 2024. All responses will be kept anonymous and confidential and will only be used to inform the Committee when updating the plan.

USG Representative Nominations Open!
Nominations for USG Representatives are open until Sunday, March 10th at 5PM. Please submit a nomination or two for someone you believe would represent the student body as a:

● College of Business Representative (1 position available)
● College of Computing Representative (2 positions available)

USG members must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.25 and be in good conduct standing. If you are nominated for a position and do not meet the GPA or conduct requirements, you will not be eligible to run and will not receive an email notifying you of your nomination and next steps.
USG members are required to hold 3 office hours per week and join a standing committee, all of which meet weekly. Additionally, members attend weekly meetings on Wednesdays from 7-9PM.
Nominations will be accepted until 5pm on Sunday, March 10th. Candidates are required to attend a mandatory election information session, either on Tuesday, March 12th at 7PM or Thursday, March 14th at 6PM. Elections will open at 8am on Monday, March 18th, and close at 5pm on Sunday, March 24th. New members will be sworn in at the meeting on Wednesday, March 27th at 7pm. Romanian guest conductor Cristian Lupeş leads the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra in an evening of transcendent Tchaikovsky at the Calumet Theatre. The evening features Tchaikovsky’s turbulent The Tempest (Symphonic Fantasy after Shakespeare) and his final work, Symphony No. 6, “The Pathétique”—premiered nine days before his death.

Simple Machines is a two-edition, international, letterpress poetry magazine founded and edited by Michigan Tech’s M. Bartley Seigel, funded through a Research Excellence Fund—Scholarship & Creativity Grant, produced in collaboration with designer/printers at the Copper Country Community Arts Center, and TYPA Letterpress & Paper Art Center, Tartu, Estonia, and featuring original poetry from a diverse array of national and international poets.

Prep for Design Expo and other term end presentations the right way – with peer support, pizza, and help from dedicated library and university staff! You’re invited to four instructional work sessions to help you create compelling videos, visuals and pitches for the projects you have dedicated so much time to. Pizza will be provided at each so you can grab a quick meal while you fine tune your work!
Faculty and instructors are highly encouraged to send students working on large final projects to these workshops.
