Student Scoop – July 24, 2024

Student Health Insurance Update

The 2024-2025 academic year student health insurance plan, offered through UnitedHealthcare, is now open for enrollment. The coverage is effective from 8/16/2024-8/15/2025.

Michigan Tech requires all graduate and international students to be enrolled in a comprehensive health insurance plan. Graduate and international students must either purchase the UnitedHealthcare plan or submit a waiver showing proof of alternative coverage. Graduate students with an assistantship must still take action to enroll in the health plan. Michigan Tech does not automatically enroll any student in health insurance coverage.

Domestic undergraduate students are not mandated to have comprehensive health insurance and do not require a waiver. However, undergraduates are eligible to enroll in the UnitedHealthcare student plan, if needed.

Student athletes are required to carry comprehensive health insurance coverage. Contact Nate Larson for more information.

Visit Michigan Tech’s Student Insurance webpage, https://www.mtu.edu/hr/students/insurance/, for more information on the 2024-2025 United Healthcare plan design and rates, instructions for enrollment, and instructions for submitting a waiver (graduate and international students only).

Important note: There is a new waiver process for 2024-2025 with submissions required through the UnitedHealthcare Student Resources portal, https://studentcenter.uhcsr.com/mtu, instead of being submitted to Michigan Tech’s Student Insurance office.

If you have any questions, feel free to email studentinsurance@mtu.edu or call at 906-487-1088.

Poll Workers Needed for August and November!

This year, statewide elections will offer a minimum of 9-days of early in-person voting. This means more poll workers are needed to help voters and count ballots. The State of Michigan is seeking individuals to serve as paid local poll workers for both the August and November 2024 elections.

To serve as a poll worker in Michigan, you must be:

  • You must be at least 16 years of age.
  • You must be a registered voter in Michigan if 18+ years of age. Individuals aged 16 – 17 must be a Michigan resident.
  • You must not have a felony or election crime conviction.
  • You must not be an election challenger, a candidate, a member of a candidate’s immediate family, or a member of the local board of canvassers.

Hired workers will be paid for their time, and fully trained by local or county clerks to run elections. Hiring and training sessions for the August election may be offered near you throughout June and July. For the November election, hiring and training sessions may be available throughout September, October, and November.
