Wilderness First Responder Course – Registration opens September 20th!
Wilderness First Responder (WFR) is the definitive course in medical training for outdoor educators, guides, SAR team members, and others who work or play in remote areas. The curriculum is comprehensive and practical, including all of the essential principles and skills required to assess and manage medical problems in isolated and extreme environments. The on-site instruction that follows reinforces and expands on the knowledge already acquired. Because students arrive familiar with the didactic material, on-site daytime training can focus on wilderness and rescue scenarios and practical skills.
The Hybrid 5-day format is for individuals and sponsors with less time available for on-site training and requires 30 hours of pre-course preparation. Students must register at least 3 weeks before the course date. All students must complete all pre-course e-learning prior to arrival on course. *Must be 18 years or older*

Consumer Product Manufacturing Information
Consumer Product Manufacturing (CPM) was started in 2001 by Dr. Tony Rogers (emeritus) and has become one of the larger enterprise teams on campus serving many students and companies through the years. Most recently, during the Spring 2024 Design Expo, CPM and its students were awarded the Innovative Solutions Student Award, First Place in the 2024 Innovation Award, and the Outstanding Sponsor Award. CPM will be home seven core projects during the Fall 2024 semester, and they are as follows:
- AAA Prosthesis: This project is focused on developing a below-the-knee prosthetic marketed toward third-world countries. Team lead Kiernan Dunn can be reached at kiernand@mtu.edu.
- Biogas: This project is focused on constructing a small-scale pilot plant to evaluate the feasibility, benefits, and requirements of a full-scale anaerobic digester on campus. Team lead Collin Diehl can be reached at cjdiehl@mtu.edu.
- Clean Diesel: Focused on improving MTU’s public image through its pursuit of sustainability, this project refines waste dining hall cooking oil to create clean biodiesel that can be used by campus and local farmers. Team lead Natalie Wallas can be reached at npwallas@mtu.edu.
- GSK Chloroform Detection: GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), a global biopharma company with a particular focus on innovation in vaccines and specialty medicines, is in search of a way to lower the volume of organic waste streams. The team wishes to design a system to detect the level of chloroform in the waste stream and/or remove the water and/or keep water from being mixed with the organic solvents. Team lead Max Blake can be reached at miblake@mtu.edu.
- HBF Combustible Dust Hazards: H.B. Fuller (HBF) is the world’s leading provider of innovative adhesives and sealants. The Michigan Tech team has been asked to perform a study on the potential hazard of dust explosions of water-based adhesives. The team’s findings will be published in a white paper for company use. Team lead Katie Liberman can be reached at kmliberm@mtu.edu.
- Koppers Inline Chemical Analysis: This project is sponsored by Koppers and is focused on improving the inline chemical analysis process in the Hubbell, Michigan plant. Team lead Sam Cox can be reached at sdcox@mtu.edu.
- Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC): This project was started by a leading producer of oxygen therapy devices, Advanced Interactive Response Systems (AIRS), and is focused on creating a slim and lightweight oxygen purification system. Team lead Nelson Rider can be reached at nrider@mtu.edu.
