Cardboard Boats this Friday!

Kick off the festivities on Friday with the annual Cardboard Boat Races at Centennial Park in Chassell. Teams of students have put their creativity to the test, designing boats out of cardboard and duct tape. Watch as they race across the bay, battling both the water and each other for the top prize. The race begins at 4 PM, and it’s sure to make a splash! A shuttle is available at 3 p.m. with pick-up locations at the Memorial Union Building and the SDC. The shuttle will conclude its route at 6 p.m.

We need energetic volunteers to help make this exciting event possible. From assisting with check-in and guiding teams, to keeping the races safe and fun for everyone, volunteers play a key role in the action. Not only will you get a front-row seat to all the creativity (and sink-or-swim drama), but you’ll also be part of what makes Homecoming unforgettable for our Huskies.

Sign up today and help us keep the tradition afloat!

RSO Re-Registration and Training due Monday at 8 am!

Every year, Registered Student Organizations are required to re-register their organization to maintain their registered status. Re-registration opened on August 4th. Required officers (President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Advisor) must complete the training on Canvas. Your organization’s president must also complete the re-registration form on Involvement Link. All officer training and the re-registration form must be completed by September 22, 2025, by 8:00 AM. Failure to complete your training on time will result in a decrease in your organization’s budget for this academic year and a potential loss of privileges granted to registered groups. Please see the schedule below:

  • You will receive 100% of your allocation if registered by 09/22/25.
  • You will receive 90% of your allocation if registered by 09/26/25.
  • You will receive 75% of your allocation if registered by 10/3/25.
  • You will receive 0% of your allocation if registered after 10/10/25.

Please note: All officers and advisors will be removed from the Canvas training before Re-registration, so the training can be updated and old officers removed. All current officers and advisors will be re-added to the new training at the beginning of re-registration. Every officer and advisor must complete the training every year during Re-registration.

Unlock Your Leadership Potential: LeaderShape Institute Applications Now Open

It’s that time of the year again. Applications to attend the 30th LeaderShape Institute at Michigan Tech are now open!

The Institute is not a typical leadership retreat, it is grounded in helping individuals identify the values they hold that lead to making a difference in the communities around them. By leading with passion, integrity, and a healthy disregard for the impossible, participants explore who they are and the impact that they want to have on communities working towards a more caring, just and equitable society.

This year The Leadership Institute will run from Saturday, December 13th through Tuesday, December 16th. Learn more about The LeaderShape Institute and where to apply on the Student Leadership & Involvement website.

Volunteers Needed to Help Big Brothers Big Sisters Create More Moments that Matter

Real change happens in real moments. A moment of your time could mean a lifetime of confidence for a child and make all the difference. Mentoring is not about grand gestures – it’s the simple, consistent moments that build trust and spark growth. Little everyday moments can lead to life-changing impact.

Make this moment matter. Be Big… Volunteer today.

Information about Volunteering to Be a Big can be found on our local website. Here you will find more detailed information about volunteering to include the process, responsibilities and expectations of volunteers, and an FAQ section along with a link to our online Volunteer Application: https://upkids.com/be-big-volunteer

The Criteria to Volunteer:

Bigs must be 18 years of age or older, have a valid driver’s license, access to reliable transportation, and be willing to commit to a long-term and consistent volunteer experience (minimum one academic year, however, most friendships last much longer). It doesn’t take special skills, nor lots of money, nor any specific personality type. We are looking for folks who are simply interested in helping a young person thrive and build a successful future by sharing time and friendship with them. No experience with kids is necessary, professional support and guidance are provided to our volunteers.

Responsibilities Once you are Matched:

  • Meet Consistently with your Little – Ideally Once a Week (College Students do not need to meet during MTU Breaks or Summer Months if they are out of town)
  • Initiate Contact with your Little & Coordinate with the Family to Schedule Activities & Outings
  • Maintain Ongoing Communication with Big Brothers Big Sisters and participate in Program Evaluations, Surveys, and Match Closure Procedures
  • Engage your Little in Positive, Safe and Fun Activities (No/Low Cost Activities)

If anyone has any questions about the volunteer experience, they can contact Big Brothers Big Sisters at bbbs@upkids.com or (906) 487-9855. We can also be found on GivePulse or reached via FB or Instagram.

As part of this upgrade, there is an important change to how you will register your child for youth programs:

Important Information for Parents/Guardians:
To register your child for aquatics programs this coming fall, you’ll need to:
1. Create your account *Note: Due to system constraints, only current students, faculty, and staff may use an MTU email. All others must use or create a different email address to create an account.
2. Add your children as your affiliates (with their date of birth)
3. Register your child through their affiliate profile (profile options in top right corner), not your own, for any program with an age requirement
This ensures accurate participant info and correct age group placement.

Create your accounts early to be ready!
Additional information on how to create your user account can be found here.
Additional information on how to create your child’s affiliate account can be found here.

Thank you for your support as we make this exciting transition! We’re confident this new system will offer a more user-friendly and efficient experience for all.

Support the Career Closet!

The Career Closet is a give-away of gently worn business clothing to assist students in preparing for Career Fair and other career opportunities. During this event, we need volunteers to help set up, stock racks, and help students put togther outfits! This event couldn’t run without our volunteers.

Support Homecoming Cardboard Boats!

Cardboard Boats is one of the most noteworthy Tech Traditions and we can’t host it without community support! Shifts are available throughout the event. You can volunteer and still participate in a cardboard boat! Just let us know your plan!

Volunteers will meet near the beach at Chassell’s Centennial Park (same place as K-Day). Please dress for the weather and bring water and snacks for yourself!

This activity requires standing for long periods, lifting items (cones, heavy wet cardboard), checking people in, and directing traffic and people.

Support Career Services’ Career Fest!

Join us for Michigan Tech’s Career Fest—a dynamic, outdoor recruiting event held under tents on the campus mall. Volunteers play a key role in creating a welcoming and successful experience for visiting employers and students.

Tasks may include setting up or tearing down tables, chairs, tents, and power connections, as well as assisting employers with booth setup. This is a great opportunity to gain event experience, connect with employers, and be part of one of campus’s largest annual events.
