National Voter Education Week: Researching Candidates and Issues

This week is National Voter Education Week! So far, we have talked a lot about how to vote, but we also want to ensure you know who and what you want to vote for amongst the many different candidates and issues on the ballot during the 2026 General Election.

What’s On Your Ballot

The first step in becoming an informed voter is finding out what’s on your ballot. Use the links below to generate your sample ballot and understand the scope of candidates up for election and the issues on your ballot this November.

Michigan – Wisconsin – Illinois – Minnesota – General (Any State)

Learn About the Candidates and Issues

Once you figure out what’s on your ballot, you can begin researching the actual candidates and issues. We recommend non-partisan resources to get you started. Check out:

  • Vote411 – “Voters deserve to hear directly from all candidates running for office in their communities. Every election, the League of Women Voters produces nonpartisan voter guides designed to help voters understand where candidates stand on the issues voters care most about. To make our guides, we ask candidates about voters’ most pressing questions and share their answers word for word. These guides empower voters with the information they need to choose who will best represent them.”
  • Ballotpedia – “Ballotpedia is the digital encyclopedia of American politics, and the nation’s premier resource for unbiased information on elections, politics, and policy. We provide our readers curated content on all levels of U.S. politics that is relevant, reliable, and available for all. In addition, Ballotpedia’s policy content and assets are a gateway to learning about public policy and an unparalleled resource for clear, comprehensive, and factual information on key policy areas. We are firmly committed to neutrality in all our content.”
  • VoteSmart – “Unlike other groups, Vote Smart is completely unbiased. No endorsements. No political advocacy or lobbying for a cause. Our sole mission is to provide free, factual, unbiased information to Americans every day of every year. Our pledge to you is that we check our politics at the door every day we come into work. We couldn’t ask for your trust any other way.”

On the Ballot in Michigan

Two proposals will be on the ballot this year for all Michigan voters:

  1. Proposal 2026-1: A proposal to convene a constitutional convention for the purpose of drafting a general revision of the state constitution
    • Shall a convention of elected delegates be convened in 2027 to draft a general revision of the State Constitution for presentation to the state’s voters for their approval or rejection? Yes/No
  2. Proposal 2026-2: A proposed initiated law to prohibit campaign contributions from certain regulated utilities and government contractors and apply campaign finance laws and regulations to additional types of political communications
    • The proposal would:
      • Prohibit regulated electric and gas utilities, contractors with over $250,000 annually in
government contracts, and people and organizations with substantial connections to
these utilities/contractors from making direct or indirect campaign contributions to
those who run for or hold offices that impact them.
      • Expand laws regulating spending on political communications, including those requiring
disclosing donor information, to apply to communications clearly identifying candidates
or ballot questions, even if they do not expressly advocate voting for/against them.
      • Expressly apply the law requiring disclosure of who paid for political communications to
        internet political communications.
    • Should this proposal be adopted? Yes/No

Don’t know how you would vote on these proposals yet? Check out the Ballotpedia info pages on Prop 1 and Prop 2 to learn more about their background, who supports/opposes them, and so much more!

Credit & Your Financial Future: How to Build It, Use It, & Protect It

Breakwater Federal Credit Union, in partnership with the Michigan Tech Muslim Students Association (MSA), is returning to Michigan Tech on Thursday, October 8, 2026, for the second workshop in an ongoing financial education series designed to help students feel more confident building their financial future.

The upcoming workshop, “Credit & Your Financial Future,” will focus on establishing credit, understanding credit reports and scores, factors that can impact credit, and using credit responsibly. Students will learn how building and maintaining a strong credit history can play an important role in future financial decisions, from renting an apartment or purchasing a vehicle to eventually financing a home.

The series was developed in partnership with MSA to provide relevant financial education for international students and families who may be navigating the U.S. financial system for the first time. While it was created with the needs of international students in mind, students from all backgrounds can benefit from learning more about credit. All Michigan Tech students are invited to attend.

The workshop will take place from 5:00–6:00 p.m. in the MUB Alumni Lounge B. Families are welcome, and activities for children and refreshments will be provided.

Those planning to attend are kindly asked to register in advance so we can prepare enough refreshments and materials for everyone.

Advance registration requested

Hosted by the Michigan Tech Muslim Students Association with Breakwater Federal Credit Union as the community partner and educational presenter.

Info Sessions for the Aerospace Enterprise at Michigan Tech

The Aerospace Enterprise recruiting process has opened! We are looking for students who want to become prominent engineers and leaders in the Aerospace industry for the Spring 2027 semester. There will be information sessions on Wednesday, October 7th and Tuesday, October 13th. Both sessions will be hosted from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM in M&M U115. Please attend at least one info session!

The Aerospace Enterprise, founded in 2001 by Dr. Lyon King, Professor of Space Systems, has aided in providing several skill sets and leadership experience to the hundreds of members who have gone through the program. The program allows you to earn senior design credit while gaining valuable skills and networking.

The Aerospace Enterprise is currently developing and testing two spacecraft missions: Auris and Stratus. Auris, sponsored by the U.S. Air Force Research Labs, determines and characterizes spatial locations and radio-frequency emissions of unknown geostationary satellites. Stratus, sponsored by N.A.S.A., characterizes cloud coverage over various Earth regions to determine optimal solar-farm placement.
Additionally, within the past few semesters, the Aerospace Enterprise has added two new missions: Connexus and Descensus. Connexus is a server database focused on connecting the entire enterprise using various organizational methods and data management. Descensus is a mission for the NASA Cansat competition that changes mission requirements annually to help solve real-world problems while testing aerospace vehicles.

For any inquiries, further information, or schedule conflicts with both information sessions, email aerospace@mtu.edu.

Disclaimer: The Aerospace Enterprise is only permitted to recruit U.S. citizens.
