Michigan Early Voting Starts This Saturday!

Early voting starts in Michigan this Saturday, October 24th. If you plan to vote in Michigan, you can cast your ballot in person at an early voting site before Election Day (November 3rd), now through Sunday, November 1st. At early voting sites, you will receive a ballot and can insert it into a tabulator, similar to how you would vote on Election Day. This is a great option if you will be travelling home this weekend for Fall Break!

Where Can I Vote Early In Michigan?

While the process for voting early is very similar to Election Day polling places, the locations often vary as they serve voters from multiple cities or townships. This means that your site may be different from your normal polling location. To find your early voting site, visit the Michigan Voter Information Center and click on “your voter information.” You can then find information about early voting based on your home address. If you are voting in Houghton County, your early voting site is the Houghton County Building located at 19741 W. Sharon Avenue, Houghton, Michigan 49931.

Have you already received your absentee ballot?

Now is the time to complete and return your ballot! Your completed absentee ballot must be received by your city or township clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day. You can submit by mail or by hand-delivering the ballot to your clerk’s office or their secure drop box. If you are returning your ballot within two weeks of Election Day, we recommend hand-delivering your ballot to avoid possible postal delays.

Beginning February 2024, you can also bring your absentee ballot to your early voting site or election day polling place to place into a tabulator yourself. If you decide to do so, bring your ballot in the envelope provided by the clerk, and election inspectors will assist you in tabulating your ballot. If you’re travelling home for Fall Break, we recommend bringing your absentee ballot with you and returning it while you are there.

Already voted and wanted to celebrate? Still have questions and want to learn about your options to cast your ballot in the week before the election?

Stop by Party at the Polls hosted by USG! Details are below. Transportation will be provided from 12-4 PM for voters who are registered or want to register in Houghton County. The shuttle will pick up near the event and make stops at Houghton City Center if you need to register with the clerk, and then continue to the Early Voting site for you to cast your ballot. Even if you have already voted, aren’t eligible, or are waiting to vote on election day, you are welcome to join the fun!

Join USG, WMTU, MUB Board, IRHC, and Cornhole Club on Walker Lawn on October 27th from 12- 4 p.m. for FREE food, music, games, and more! Come hang out, have some fun, and celebrate the importance of voting!

Transportation to the polls will also be available for those voting in Houghton County. We hope to see you all there!

MTU’s First Fire Safety Prevention Week Highlights Lithium-Ion Safety on Campus

As part of our commitment to campus safety, Michigan Tech is hosting its first annual Fire Safety Prevention Week next week, from Oct. 26-30, held in coordination with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

This year’s national theme ”Lithium Battery Charging Safety,” directly addresses the risks we face in our offices, labs, and residence halls. While lithium-ion batteries provide an effective and efficient source of power, they can become a safety hazard when damaged or improperly used, charged, or stored.

Not all battery damage is visible from the outside of a device. It’s possible for devices that are not plugged in, show no visible damage, and are working normally to experience sudden internal battery failure, known as thermal runaway.

Thermal runaway occurs when a lithium-ion battery cell overheats internally and rapidly self-accelerates. Even small consumer devices can reach temperatures exceeding 500 degrees Fahrenheit, releasing flammable gases and dense smoke. These failures can occur without warning, even when a device is not charging or in use.

Lithium-ion battery hazards are real, but preventable. Throughout Fire Safety Prevention Week, MTU Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) will offer hands-on demonstrations, safety resources, and practical tips to build safer charging habits across campus.

Visit the MTU EHS website for event schedules and downloadable safety guides. Simple precautions in our shared spaces go a long way toward keeping all Huskies safe!

On Wednesday (10/28/26) and Thursday (10/29/26), join EHS for Pizza and Fire Extinguisher Training in the HSTEM from 6pm to 7pm. Learn how to use a fire extinguisher and win prizes and enjoy pizza.

Informational Sessions for the John Lewis Young Leaders Fellowship

John Lewis Young Leaders is a year-long undergraduate fellowship program that equips students with the skills to become effective community organizers and civic leaders. The program pays homage to the beautiful and inspiring friendship between John Lewis and Robert Kennedy and their joint dream of empowering young people to drive social change. Throughout the course of the year, fellows engage their campus and local communities in meaningful human rights work through a robust capstone project. Fellows receive resources and support to ensure their success in the program, including:

  • Comprehensive grassroots organizing workshops
  • Professional and leadership development training
  • 1:1 mentorship from KHRC staff
  • Financial support
  • Access to an extensive network of human rights and career professionals, peers, and program alumni

By providing fellows with these resources, we aim to build their capacity and confidence to be civically-minded leaders and human rights defenders in their communities, campuses, and careers, committed to enacting positive and perpetual change.

For those who cannot attend, a recording of the session and additional preparation resources will be available on our website, and application office hours with former JLYL fellows will be offered in January.

Volunteers Needed for the 41 North Film Festival!

Be a part of the action and volunteer with 41 North Film Festival! This year’s festival will take place Thursday, Nov. 5-Sunday, Nov. 8 at the Rozsa Center, and we need your help to make it happen! We welcome film enthusiasts, members of the campus community, and local area residents. Individuals and groups are invited to join us as volunteers.

Our volunteers help us keep 41 North free and open to the public and are an integral part of the festival. Volunteers may assist with welcoming festival attendees, ushering, and answering general questions. Help is needed for all four days of the festival; volunteer for one film or for the whole festival—it’s up to you!

Registration opens for the general public on Tuesday, Oct. 20. You can sign up to support single films directly through GivePulse!

What do I do when volunteering at the 41N?
As a Volunteer Usher, you play a critical role in creating a joyful experience at arts events. With Rozsa and 41N leadership, you and other Ushers work together to greet guests, admit folks into the theater, assist with seating and wayfinding, connect guests to venue accommodations, and support effective crowd flow and emergency procedures. Usher roles will be decided as a team at the beginning of the volunteer shift.

Do I do this alone or with other people?
Each show will have a 41 North Volunteer Coordinator, Front of House Lead, and 6-8 volunteer ushers, so you will never be alone! You are always welcome to put together a group—friends, family, or people from an organization—and enjoy the shared experience of bringing a production to life.

What do I wear and bring?
Wear clothes and shoes that you’re comfortable in! Please make sure they are free from stains and tears. Layers are encouraged. 41N volunteers will be provided with a smock to wear during your shift(s). You are welcome to bring a water bottle, and we encourage you to leave valuables at home.

How do I prepare for the event?
No experience is needed. All the training you need will take place the day of the show, before guests arrive. Ensure you arrive at or before the shift start time, and check in with the Volunteer Coordinator in the Rozsa Lobby for a brief orientation.

The 41 North Film Festival spans four days and showcases award-winning independent films and filmmakers from around the region, country, and world. Its mission is to provide Michigan Tech students and the surrounding community with an opportunity to critically engage with films that are currently in distribution and under discussion, as well as the chance to interact with filmmakers, producers, and other industry professionals about the art and business of cinematic storytelling.

Questions can be directed to our Volunteer Coordinator, Allison Neely, at alneely@mtu.edu.
