Guy Hembroff, Applied Computing/Health Informatics, presented a webinar on February 25, 2022, for HIMSS, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society. HIMSS is a global, member-based society committed to reforming the global health ecosystem through the power of information and technology.
In his presentation, “Improved Disease Surveillance, Population Health Management, and Patient Engagement through Innovative AI,” Hembroff discussed his work developing a trusted framework architecture designed to improve population health management and patient engagement. He demonstrated how his team developed accurate geo-tagged pandemic prediction algorithms to help coordinate medical supply chains to reach patients most vulnerable to COVID-19, work that can be extended to help improve general population health management, as well
Hembroff explained that the framework architecture consists of a holistic and secure mHealth community model to help residents overcome significant barriers of care, and to provide healthcare agencies with improved coordinated population management through the aggregation of longitudinal patient health data, including patient-generated health data (PGHD) and social determinants of health (SDOH).
Further, the architecture’s security components include the development of touchless biometrics capable of large-scale identity management through the establishment of unique health identifiers (UHIDs). Machine learning algorithms strategically connect residents to community resources, and provide customized health education aimed at increasing the health literacy, empowerment, and self-management of patients. Users are able to securely share their health data with others (e.g., physicians, caregivers), while clinicians can better track patients and offer improved preventative measures and care management.
Hembroff is a member of the Institute of Computing and Cybersystems’s (ICC) Centers for Biocomputing and Digital Health (BDH) and Cybersecurity (CyberS), of which he is the director.
