Student Opportunities at Michigan Sea Grant

Michigan Sea Grant is excited to announce that applications are now open for three student opportunities:

1. Michigan Sea Grant Environmental Internship

2. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship

3. National Marine Fisheries Service Fellowship 

The internship is open to undergraduate students at institutions in the state of Michigan. The Knauss and NMFS fellowships are available to graduate students at institutions in the state of Michigan. Note that the NMFS fellowship is restricted to PhD students.

2 PhD-level Research Fellowships in Landscape-Scale Restoration

U.S. Forest Service Research and Development is seeking 2 fellowships for early 2025. Two fellowship opportunities are available with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service (FS) within the Pacific Northwest Research Station (PNWRS) and the International Institute of Tropical Forestry. It is anticipated that one fellow will be located in the U.S. West and one in the U.S. Southeast. Foreign national candidates may have a mandatory in-person requirement depending on visa status.

The fellows will contribute their social science research skills to understand how project planning and coordination, work prioritization, use of existing science, characteristics of the forestry and natural resources workforce, and other factors. 

Research efforts will focus primarily on projects in western and southeastern states and territories associated with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Joint Chiefs’ Landscape Restoration Partnership Program.

Postdoctoral fellowship in Climate Change, Housing and Equity in Urban Canada Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change, York University, Toronto

This 12 month full-time post-doctoral fellow will work on a project at the intersection of climate change, housing, and poverty reduction in Ontario and British Columbia. The appointee will work with the Dean’s Office in the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change (EUC) and with the City Institute at York University, and under the supervision of Profs. Lina Brand Correa and Luisa Sotomayor as part of a team developing a Climate & Equity Lab. With funding provided by the Gore Mutual Insurance Company of Cambridge, Ontario, this initiative also involves the Cooperators Insurance Company and Social Innovation Canada, both based in Toronto.

The postdoctoral fellow will play a key role in conducting qualitative research to explore how climate change affects housing experiences and opportunities for vulnerable groups in urban Canada.

We are seeking a candidate to start as soon as possible. The salary for the position is $75,000 per annum including benefits.

Michigan Space Grant Consortium Grants and Fellowships

Michigan Space Grant Consortium (MSGC) Grants and Fellowships

Michigan Space Grant Consortium aims to foster awareness of education in and research on communities in Michigan. Research may occur over the summer, during the academic year, or both. Many students in our department have received these grants and fellowships in the past. Please consider applying to this great opportunity to help fund your research or to gain a fellowship.

  • Deadlines:
    • October 18, 2023 by  Noon — All other submissions.
    • November 8, 2023 by Noon — Internal deadline for undergraduate and graduate fellowship proposals.
    • November 15, 2023 by 5 pm — Final materials, after review and approval by SPO, must be uploaded to MSGC by the applicant.

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Sustainable Development

  • Postdoctoral Fellowship in International Sustainable Development-Indiana University 
    • The application deadline for this position is March 6th, 2023.
    • Responsibilities include:
      • teaching two international development-related undergraduate courses per year.
      • working in collaboration with the Tobias Center for Innovation in International Development to conduct and organize a conference on Area Studies and Sustainable Development that will be held in 2025.
      • drafting a resulting white paper on the conference.
      • working in collaboration and mentorship with the Center for the Study of Global Change to organize and present at K-16 educator workshops on issues related to internationalizing curricula through teaching international development-related content.

EPA Fellowship

  • EPA Fellowship for Economist/Social Scientist Evaluating Impacts of Contaminated Land, Hazardous Waste and Recycling Programs
    •  This postgraduate internship project is available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Land and Emergency Management (OLEM) within the Office of Communications, Partnerships and Analysis (OCPA) in Washington, D.C.
    • Minimum GS-9 level pay (about $70,000)

Climate Leaders Academy Fellowship

The Climate Leaders Academy is a two-semester program with the goal of providing formal climate training and professional development to fellows through direct engagement with national and international climate change frameworks, formalized mentoring and collaboration with a diverse set of institutions. Applications are due March 15, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. CDT.
Climate Leaders Academy Fellows will be entitled to:

  • $10,000 stipend ($5,000 per semester)
  • Four transferable course credits
  • All travel expenses covered (to and from kickoff workshop, climate change conferences, etc.)
  • One-on-one mentoring by a Climate Leaders Academy faculty member
  • Tuition coverage for Climate Leaders Academy course
