Community Engaged Research Assistant

The West Virginia University Center for Resilient Communities (CRC) is recruiting 4 graduate students (MA/PhD) to begin in Summer 2025.

These positions (funded up to 4 years) will focus on the development of innovative approaches to community-engaged participatory research and promoting educational processes for building more just, equitable, and vibrant communities in Appalachia, the US South and other rural regions of the US.

Applicants are expected to contribute to the CRC’s ongoing areas of research in alternative/community economies, environmental justice, climate action, and food system transformation. 

Experience in social action or efforts to promote community wellbeing or social, economic and environmental justice in rural areas is also highly desired.

Assistant Professor of Hazards & Environmental Geography

Assistant Professor of Geography specializing in Hazards & Environmental Geography to begin in Fall 2025. Old Dominion University seeks a geographer to teach undergraduate and graduate courses on campus and online whose research addresses hazards, environmental policy, and human dimensions of climate change using innovative analytic methods such as AI. This Assistant Professor will also contribute to expanding offerings in hazards geography, environmental policy, and related applications using Geographic Information Sciences (GIS) and AI.

The position carries a teaching load of three courses per semester. This may include teaching courses in the Bachelor’s degrees in Geography, in the specialized majors in Environment & Resources, Emergency/Hazards Management, GIS, and Urban Geography, and/or in the certificate programs for Hazards & Emergency Management, Environmental Resources & Policy, GIS, and Spatial Analysis of Coastal Environments. The Department also offers offer a relevant concentration in Geospatial Analytics in the MS in Data Science & Analytics, contributes to the interdisciplinary undergraduate, Master’s, and doctoral programs in International Studies, and is proposing a MS degree in Geospatial Science & Technology. Opportunities also exist to participate in ODU’s Institute for Coastal Adaptation & Resilience (ICAR), teach in the Spatial Analytics Instructional Laboratory, and collaborate with expanding schools of Public Health and Data Science.

Ph.D. Opportunities at George Mason University

Two Ph.D. opportunities in the Department of Geography and Geoinformation Sciences are available at George Mason University. The university is seeking candidates with strong foundations in transportation, geography analysis, and research interests. Ideal candidates would have experience with mobility, accessibility, spatial interaction, transportation infrastructure, and the influences of emerging technologies on urban design and travel behavior. Applicants should hold a Master’s in Geography, Urban and Regional Planning, Engineering, Computer Science, Data Analytics, or a related field.
