Student News Brief: February 11, 2011

CHILI FUNDRAISER TODAY:  A reminder that there is a chili fundraiser today (Friday) from 11am to 7pm at St. Albert the Great Church.  The fundraiser will benefit Paul Castle, a junior in construction  management,  who was involved in a severe motor vehicle accident while traveling back to school to start the spring semester.  There is a suggested donation of $5 or more for the dinner.  A silent auction of local goods and services will be held.  Volunteers are welcome and needed.  For more information, contact Genny Gierke, president of Catholic Campus Ministries, at gegierke@mtu.edu.

BENEFIT WINTER CONCERT:  Mu Beta Psi will be hosting our annual Winter Carnival concert on Friday Feb. 11th in the MUB Commons.  Local bands Love Friction and This is Deer Country will be playing beginning at 8pm.  All proceeds from the event will go to benefit Mu Beta Psi’s scholarship fund that goes to a Michigan Tech student involved in a musical ensemble on campus.  Doors open at 8pm, $5 per person, and a cash bar will be available to those of age.

KEWEENAW SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA:  Classical music matinee at 2pm Saturday, February 12 at the Rozsa Center.  The cost of a ticket is $5.00 general admission and the event is free to Michigan Tech students.  To purchase tickets, contact Michigan Tech Ticketing Services at the Rozsa Center Box Office at 487.3200, The Central Ticket Office (SDC) at 487.2073 or go online at tickets.mtu.edu. SOMNIUM:  “The After Days:  A Somnium Event” will be held 7pm Saturday, Febaruay 12 at the Rozsa Center Art Gallery and is a free event.  Somnium is a Hancock based band whose music recalls Pink Floyd and presents a music-art fusion show with both local and out-of-the-area artists and musicians.  The art exhibition will remain in the gallery for three weeks after the opening night on February 12.

PABLO FRANCISCO:  AKA “The Movie Trailer Guy” is this year’s Winter Carnival Comedian, sponsored by the Michigan Tech Student Entertainment Board.  This event will be held on Saturday, February 12 at 9pm in the Rozsa Center.  Not appropriate for children.  Ticket prices for the general public are $32 for adults, $30 for seniors, and $28 for students.  To purchase tickets, contact Michigan Tech Ticketing Services at the Rozsa Center Box Office at 487.3200, The Central Ticket Office (SDC) at 487.2073 or go online at tickets.mtu.edu. VALENTINE’S DAY MOVIE:  The KISS Club and Film Board will be screening “She’s Out of My League” at 8:30 pm on Valentine’s Day in Fisher 135.  Doors open at 8:00pm and the event is FREE.  Bring a date, or come with friends.  Enjoy free popcorn, cookies and other Valentine’s Day goodies.  Free condom roses or chocolate roses while supplies last. Valentine’s Day and other prizes will be raffled at the end.

GIVE BACK:  Join us on Tuesday, February 15 at 4:00pm at St. Vincents in Hancock and help prepare weekly meal packages as well as sorting in the food bank and donation room.  Then at 6:00pm, join us in the conversation and message of “The True Impact of Giving Back” with staff from St. Vincent’s and other stores from the local community.

LEAD/HOST EVENTS DURING ORIENTATION:  There will be an information session for “Get Involved in Orientation 2011” on Tuesday, February 15 from 7:00pm to 8:00pm in MUB Ballroom A2.  The purpose of this information session is for your student organization to obtain information on how you can lead/host events during Orientation 2011.   Some of the orientation events include evening activities, holding an information session, or leading an orientation trip.  For more information, email  djturner@mtu.edu.

HUGH BLAXILL PRESENTATION:  Hugh Blaxill from MAHLE Powertrain Ltd., will present “Challenges for Increased Efficiency through Increased Performance” on Wednesday, February 16 at 6:30pm in M&M U115.  This event is sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers.  FREE PIZZA AND POP!

MOTOWN NIGHT:  Motown Night will be held on Satuday,  February 19, 2011 at 8PM in the DHH Ballroom.  The event is free, and sponsored by the Black Student Organization in celebration of Black History Month.  Students will dress up and perform hit songs by the Temptations, Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Jackson 5 and Marvin Gaye.  There will be trivia and prizes, and a photo booth where guests may take pictures in front of a backdrop.  The event is open to everyone, and light refreshments will be provided!

STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARDS:  Student Affairs is seeking nominations for the President’s Award for Leadership, Vice President for Student Affairs Service Award, and various other student leadership awards. The recipient of each award will be honored at the spring student leadership awards which will be held on Friday, April 15, 2011.  All awards and information about each can be found on the web at www.sa.mtu.edu/awards/.  Nominations for the President’s Award for Leadership and the Vice President for Student Affairs Award for Service need to be submitted by Friday, March 4, 2011, at 5:00 p.m.  Nominations for all other Student Leadership Awards need to be submitted by Friday, March 18, 2011.   Each nomination will enter you into a drawing for one of four $100 gift certificates from the Campus Bookstore.  If you have any questions concerning the awards, please contact Lynda Heinonen at 487-1832 or lheinone@mtu.edu.

GREEK LIFE AWARDS:  Nominations for the 2011 Greek Life Awards are now open and run until 5:00 pm on March 1st, 2011.  Every spring, Greek Life at Michigan Tech takes the time to recognize those Greek chapters and their members who are making a positive impact in the Greek and University communities as leaders, scholars, and innovators.  Anyone can nominate a Greek student, adviser, or chapter for an award, not just Greeks!  For a direct link to the nomination packet, go to http://greek.mtu.edu/Current_Greek_Students/awards.pdf and print it out today!
