Student News Briefs – Friday, November 15, 2013

The Undergraduate Student Government and the Graduate Student Government are working collaboratively this school year to advocate on behalf of students at both the University and on a political level.
Our student governments would like to foster increased political awareness and activity among students by encouraging communication between students and legislators. We believe an open forum for students to communicate with legislators that represent the Houghton community is a great way to do this.
Therefore, the Undergraduate Student Government and Graduate Student Government would like to invite your student organization to our student open forum with state legislators that will take place on November 18th at 7PM in room 202 of the Great Lakes Research Center. Light refreshments will be served.
Representative Scott Dianda and a representative from State Senator Tom Casperson’s office will be present to answer questions from students. The topic of discussion will be “The Future of Higher Education in Michigan”.
We hope that you can make it to the event. If you have any questions please feel free to contact djlafore@mtu.edu.

Student Organization and Fraternity/Sorority Leaders and Advisors,

If you are looking for a community service opportunity and/or for something fun to do, the Michigan Tech Preschool would like to invite your organization to participate in our upcoming Bounce-O-Rama fund raising event as event volunteers.  This event is open to the entire community – including all ages up to high school and college students and adults.  What we are doing is a carnival-type event where we are having many inflatable obstacles and play areas brought in to the Multi-Purpose room in the SDC on Saturday, November 9th.

We need volunteers mainly to supervise the different areas – things like moon walks, inflatable slides, velcro wall, boxing ring, etc – to make sure the participants stay safe, stay in age appropriate groups, and to rotate participants through according to lines, time limits, etc.  We will train you and it is a fun and easy event.  A large part of our success with past Bounce-O-Ramas has been a great group of volunteers and we hope the campus community can help the Preschool again this year.  A summary of the details is below.

If your organization can participate, please get back to me by November 1st with a list of names and/or a number of volunteers your organization can commit to one or more shifts.  We will need about 20 total volunteers for each event shift and about 10 each for set-up and tear-down.

Michigan Tech Preschool is a non-profit parent cooperative preschool that has been serving the local community and its children for over 50 years.  We hope you will choose to work with us to continue our tradition of affordable early childhood education.

Diwali, also referred to as “Festival of Lights”, is India’s biggest and most popular holiday of the year. Diwali signifies the triumph of good over evil. Indians celebrate with family gatherings, glittering clay lamps, festive fireworks, strings of electric lights, bonfires, flowers and sharing of sweets. The Indian Students Association (ISA) at MTU, one of the most active student organizations on campus, has always enjoyed sharing its culture with the international community. “Diwali Night” is the biggest cultural event held by a student organization at Tech, which gives us an opportunity to celebrate Diwali with everyone around. It enjoys a wide spread popularity throughout the campus and also the local community with as many as 800 people attending the event every year.

This year performances revolve around the theme “The BIG FAT Indian Wedding”, featuring music band show, Bollywood dancing, classical Indian dance, traditional fashion show and much more…
