HuskyLead – How Do I Grow My Professional Network? LinkedIn and Other Strategies

The next HuskyLead will be held on Tuesday, January 21 at 6:00 PM in MUB Ballroom B.  Participants will learn how to grow their professional network to advance their career and gain valuable life skills. LinkedIn, informational interviews, elevator pitches, and other strategies will be discussed.

Annual Bigfoot Snowshoe Event

This years Bigfoot Snowshoe event will be held on Saturday, February 8. Registration is from 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM at the waxing shed on the Tech Trails and free snowshoe rentals are available with a student ID. The raffle will be held at noon and as always participants receive a long sleeve T-Shirt!

The pre-registration deadline is Friday, January 31 and payments must be received by this date. Tech students and children (12 and under) is $15, pre-registration is $10, adults are $18, pre-registration is $12.

Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly of Hancock has many upcoming volunteer opportunities for individuals and organizations. From cutting and delivering wood to helping at parties like Valentine’s Day or visiting local elderly in the community to alleviate loneliness during the winter, there is an activity for every type of volunteer.

2014 Undergraduate Research Expo Call for Apstracts

The Michigan Tech Honors Institute would like to invite all undergraduate researchers from every department to submit an abstract for research to be presented at the 2014 Undergraduate Research Expo. This expo will give researchers a chance to present posters describing completed or ongoing research and receive feedback from faculty judges. Not only will this event be an excellent learning experience for presenters, but it will also showcase the undergraduate research that is happening at Michigan Tech. The Expo will be held in the Rosza Lobby during Spring Preview Weekend (March 21) when visiting high school students will be able to see the exciting opportunities available to them at Michigan Tech.

The Honors Institute has been working closely with the Vice President of Research and the Undergraduate Admissions Office to make this event possible, and hopes undergraduate researchers will take advantage of this valuable experience. Printing of posters will be sponsored up to $25. For directions for poster design, please visit Prizes of $200, $150, and $100 will be awarded to the best 3 posters, as chosen by faculty judges.

Please visit to submit the abstract. Submission will take place via an online form, but is is recommended that presenters save their abstract in a document and copy the required information to the website. Abstracts will need to include presenter name, e-mail address, class, college/school, department, and faculty advisor’s name. The body of the abstract should include a title, the names of the authors, an introduction, a description of the materials and methods, the results of the completed or ongoing research, and any acknowledgements. Submissions will be accepted from November 15, 2013 until January 31, 2014. Abstracts will be reviewed by Research Expo staff, and a confirmation of acceptance will be sent by February 8. In the event that not all presenters will fit in the Rosza Lobby, it is possible that some abstracts will not be accepted.

Michigan Tech Research Lab in Need of Blood Donors

If you know (and have proof of) your Blood Type, please consider donating for research.  A research lab ( is seeking blood donors for all blood types but particularly AB+, AB-, B+ and A-.  If you would be willing to donate a small vial of blood via the SDC Portage Health Clinic’s trained personnel, please contact us at or 906-487-2106 to schedule an appointment with Kaela Leonard.  For any questions regarding the research, contact Dr. Adrienne Minerick at or 487-2796.  You will be asked to provide proof of blood type, but other personal information will not be recorded and be kept completely confidential.   You will need to give your consent for donation; the form can be viewed at


Schools Out, the SDC’s In

Coinciding with the full day or 1/2 day off for most local schools on Friday, Jan. 17, Michigan Tech Recreation is hosting a “School’s Out, the SDC’s In!” event. For $8, local youth receive an SDC “School’s Out” all-inclusive day pass which includes access to the pool, multipurpose room and ice rink. Children 11 and under require adult supervision. The Fitness Center is available to students 16 and older only. Highlights include:

Multipurpose Room (basketball, volleyball, badminton and more*) – 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM
Open Skate–12:00 to 2:00 PM (skate rental not available)
Open Swim–10:00 to 11:30 AM. and 2:00 and 9:00 PM

REAC Meeting

Railroad Engineering Activities Club is starting this Spring semester off with their first General Board Meeting on January 21 from 7:00-8:00 PM in Dillman 214. We will have a brief presentation on the “Upper Peninsula Rail Study Project” by Irfan Rasul and Akalu Tafesse (Michigan Tech Graduate Students).  All majors wecomed!  As always there will be free pizza and drinks at the meeting.

Also the 9th Annual Railroad Night will be held on February 18 from 7:00 – 9:30 PM at the Franklin Square Inn.  Railroad Night is an opportunity to build connections and a chance to follow up with railroad company representatives after Career Fair during a formal dinner.  First 50 people to sign up get FREE admission. Otherwise, admission is $3.00.  Ticket includes a great meal and a chance to win raffle prizes.

Organizations Can Apply for Funding through Parent Fund

This is a reminder that student organizations can apply for funding through the Michigan Tech Parents Annual Fund, or the Parents Fund, administered by the Waino Wahtera Center for Student Success.  Parents Fund money can be used for speakers and programs, social and community building events, University traditions including Winter Carnival and Spring Fling, travel for conferences and networking events, participation in national and regional competitions, or any event that encourages involvement in the Michigan Tech and campus communities.

Michigan Tech Trivia Night

Please join the Student Philanthropy Council for a Michigan Tech trivia night in the MUB Commons, Thursday, February 27, 2014, 6:00-7:00 PM.

All registered student organizations are invited to participate with a team (3 member maximum).  There will be 3 rounds of 20 trivia questions regarding Michigan Tech.  A grand prize of $500 cash will be awarded to the winning team to assist their student organization.

Chinese Night

Chinese New Year, celebrating the start of the Year of the Horse, is coming this weekend. Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the biggest and most significant event of the year in the Chinese community. One tradition is a New Year’s Eve reunion dinner, when family members get together and enjoy the moment with the people they love.

This year, Michigan Tech’s Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) invites the campus and community to celebrate Chinese New Year with them on Chinese Night, Saturday, Jan. 18. Dinner, featuring authentic Chinese dishes cooked by members of the CSSA–including pork with serrano pepper, tea-flavored boiled eggs and steamed dumplings–will be served at the Memorial Union Commons from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

A performance in the Rozsa Center after the dinner will time-travel to ancient China with a play and dancing in ancient and modern styles.  “We dance for elegance and inner tranquility that is deeply rooted in the Chinese culture,” says the CSSA. “We dance for enthusiasm and passion as in the modern China. We also dance to express our wish for a family reunion at this very moment of time.”  A local band called The Board is Playing also will perform.

Tickets for Chinese Night are $10 for CSSA members and $15 for non-members. They are available at the SDC ticket office, 487-2578.


Remembrance of Sanaz Nezami

The Iranian Community at Michigan Tech invites you to attend a memorial ceremony for Sanaz Nezami, 27, a newly admitted graduate student who passed away after falling victim to a tragic domestic assault.

The memorial will be held on January 28 in the MUB Ballroom, from 5:00-6:00 PM and is sponsored by International Programs, Center for Diversity and Inclusion, and the Memorial Union Building.
