1. Khana Khazana Serving Nepalese Cuisine
Khana Khazana will be serving Nepali cuisine this Friday that will be cooked by Aadarsh Upreti; a student of Mechanical Engineering Dept. at Michigan Tech.
The main dish is Chicken Curry (Piro Kukhura). This curry is cooked with chicken and rich flavored spices and is usually served with rice. For the vegetarians, we have Black eyed bean Curry (Aloo Bodi Tama) cooked with potatoes, bamboo shoots and spices.
The second dish is Noodle Salad (Chow chow sadeko). It is a snack which is mildly sour and little spicy in taste. It is made from wai-wai noodles and salad ingredients.
A very luscious dessert called Gojiya would be the third one to conclude your meal. This dessert is made of mainly the mixture of semolina, shredded coconut, cashew and cardamom stuffed inside a dough.
Serving is from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the MUB Food Court. The whole meal is $6.95 and includes a fountain soda or $2.50 per dish.

3. Make A Difference Day Sign Up Now
Interested in volunteering during Make a Difference Day, Saturday, October 25? Sign up HERE!
The event will be taking place Saturday, October 25. Check-In will be between 9:00-10:00AM. Please meet in the MUB Commons. Information packets will be distributed and from there, groups will travel to service locations. There will be limited space for volunteers and groups will be placed in order that they register. Our goal is to place as many volunteers with agencies as we can. Please note that some projects will require that groups drive to the location.Volunteer projects during the day will vary based on what agencies we are partnering with. Painting, weeding, planting, digging, cleaning and moving are all likely projects we’ll be helping with.

7. Michigan Tech Film Board Showing Maleficent
This weekend, Film Board will be showing “Maleficent” in Fisher 135. It will be shown on: Friday, October 10th, at 5:30, 8:30, and 11:30pm; Saturday, October 11th, at 2:30, 5:30, 8:30, and 11:30pm; and Sunday, October 12th, at 2:30 and 5:30pm. 9. Intrasquad Game and A Chance To Skate With The Huskies Oct. 11
The Michigan Tech hockey team is playing an intrasquad game at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 6 p.m. Admission to the game is a donation to local youth hockey, and fans are encouraged to bring along their skates to skate with the team afterward. The game will also be streamed for free on huskieslive.mtu.edu.
“We want to invite everyone to come on down,” Tech hockey coach Mel Pearson said. “All the players will play, and we’ll have an autograph session after the game for the fans.”
The game will feature two 25-minute halves with three media timeouts each half.
“We’re looking forward to it and it’s a great way for our players to interact with the local community,” added Pearson.
The Huskies are coming off a weekend sweep of Lake Superior State and have two weekends off of regular season play before continuing WCHA play at Ferris State Oct. 24-25.

11. Social Justice Lecture They Call Me Q
Friday, October 17 at 7:00 PM in the MUB Ballroom: Social Justice Lecture Series:THEY CALL ME Q is the story of a girl from Bombay growing up in the Bronx, NY who gracefully seeks balance between the cultural pressures brought forth by her traditional parents and wanting acceptance into her new culture. 14. Volunteers Needed to Conduct a Study Involving a Driving Simulator
Graduate student in Applied Cognitive Science and Human Factors seeking volunteers to conduct a study for thesis. Needing one hour of your time and willing to utilize a driving simulator. Valid drivers licence and at least two years driving experience needed.

15. Youth Dance Program Looking for Teaching Assistants
The Youth Dance Program at Michigan Tech Community Programs is looking for qualified teaching assistants for the current semester. This is a volunteer role, but has the possibility to transition to a paid primary teacher position for spring semester.
Duties include:
- leading an exercise if teacher is assisting a student
- assisting a confused or struggling student
- handing out and collecting props or equipment
- keeping children focused
- maintaining a safe classroom environment
- being an encouraging and enthusiastic presence

16. R.A.D. Course Begins October 21
Master self-defense tactics and safety techniques through a comprehensive course designed specifically for women ages twelve and up. It begins with a focus on awareness, prevention, and risk reduction/avoidance, and progresses to the basics of hands-on defense training.
R.A.D. is offered by Michigan Tech’s Department of Public Safety and Police Services through Community Programs, and the course is taught by Public Safety officers. The class combines both classroom instruction and hands on physical training.
Dates: October 21 – November 13
Days/Times: Tuesdays/Thursdays, 6:00-8:00pm

Cost: $30 for Michigan Tech students, $50 for non-students

21. New Just In Case App Released
One easily accessible resource to help students find critical contact and support information is Michigan Tech’s Just in Case smartphone app.
This app provides quick access to resources that students can connect to regarding thoughts of hurting oneself or others, sexual violence/assault, feeling overwhelmed or being worried about a friend. Just in Case provides students with information about what to do in an emergency, how to get connected to care, as well as some strategies to assist with feelings of being overwhelmed.
This serves as one of the tools that our campus can use for suicide prevention and early intervention with students who need assistance and resources. As a University we are being asked to actively participate in a new public awareness campaign regarding sexual misconduct, and helping connect students who have concerns is one of the ways that we can fulfill this responsibility.
The Just in Case app can be found listed under Michigan Tech’s smartphone app as well as accessed directly by scanning a QR code on posters and advertisements. Users can also gain access by visiting the web page.

22. 10th Annual Rail Night and Rail Day Student Expo
Tuesday, October 14th marks Michigan Tech’s first ever Rail Day Expo, aimed at giving students an inside look at the latest rail industry equipment and technology. Railroads are in great demand for a younger generation of employees, and now is a great time to see what the rail industry has to offer! The day will be packed with events, including lunch with indstry and equipment displays 11 AM – 4 PM in the Dow courtyard and lobby.
As the afternoon draws to a close, we will be headed to the MUB for our 10th Annual Railroad Night. Dinner will be served and we will be hearing from guest keynote speaker Mr. Timothy Hoeffner from MDOT’s Office of Rail. Railroad Night is another fantastic opportunity to speak to industry representatives and to learn more about career possibilities in rail.

24. Singer Songwriter, Brett Young, Performing
With three independent albums already under his belt, Brett recently took his newest batch of songs into Blackberry Studios in Nashville, with David Hall at the production helm, known for his GRAMMY Award winning work as an engineer, with artists of nearly every genre. And true to form, showcasing that intensity and emotion in his recordings, of songs like “Fire” and “Breathe Again.”
“I grew up with Al Green, Marvin Gaye—soul singers. I like that the emotion carries the songs, where the music is almost secondary,” he says. “Van Morrison’s ‘Crazy Love’—that’s just timeless. They influence me; as a songwriter and a performer, I want to connect like they did. And when your audience feels like they can relate, then you have something much more special than a show, or a sale. You have a fan.”
When it comes to Brett Young, it isn’t so far from a pitcher’s mound to a major stage, and it doesn’t really matter what kind of Big Show you’re talking about. Because in the end, when you have that thing called heart, it shows. You may see it in his eyes, but you’ll hear it in his voice.
Brett has since played venues ranging from House of Blues to Troubadour, and shared the stage with such artists as Mandy Moore, Tyrone Wells, Jason Reeves, Gavin Degraw, Tyler Hilton, Katy Perry, Hoku and many more. Brett recently came off of a 40 city National Tour with Tyrone Wells and is currently traveling and playing all over the country.
25. Treat Streets Halloween Event
The City of Houghton is formally inviting Michigan Tech students to partake in Treat Streets Halloween event on Friday, October 24
Join us for one big Monster Mash on Shelden Avenue. The event starts at 6:30pm and ends at 8:00pm. Shelden Avenue will be closed to thru traffic during this time.
If you are a registered student organization and would like to help hand out candy, please contact Lt. Nicholas Roberts at the City of Houghton Police Department
to make arrangements. We are asking participants to dress up in costumes appropriate for elementary school age kids.
We will have music in the streets and a large pumpkin in the center of Shelden Avenue for kids to walk thru. The businesses will also be handing out treats for the
