Intro to Mountain Biking Hosted by the Outdoor Adventure Program

Put your mountain biking skills to the test on the Copper Harbor trails on Saturday, June 30 at 3:00PM. Transportation and shuttle will be included in the cost of $25 per person. Please sign up in advance by calling 906.487-2290 or by emailing oap@mtu.edu.


Khana Khazana Serving Iranian Cuisine

The Dining Services food trailer will be parked on campus Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will serve Iranian Cuisine. The featured dish is Beef Roll which is egg and coriander rolled up and seasoned with pomegranate then  cooked in a special tomato sauce and served with rice.  Also serving Potato Kuku, an egg based Persian vegetarian dish, flavored with shredded potatoes, onion, saffron, and garlic chives; serves in a special tomato sauce and rice.  And for dessert Mille-Feuille also know as the Nepoleon, made up of three layers of puff pastry alternating with layers of whipped cream.

The Chassell Lions present their second annual Fun Trail Walk/Run to benefit the ‘Simple Kindness of Youth’ program. The run will take place at the Chassell trails behind the Chassell Heritage Building on Saturday, July 11 at 8:00 AM Register here! You may register the day of the event. Free t-shirt with paid registration (guaranteed with registration by 6/30)

Participate in the 2015 Parade of Nations

Now is the time to plan your organization’s participation in the 2015 Parade of Nations and Multicultural Festival on Saturday, September 19, 2015.   The Parade will begin in Hancock at 11 AM and end at the Dee Stadium in Houghton.  The Multicultural Festival is in the Dee immediately following the Parade.Organizations can register to have a float in the Parade or a booth at the Festival.  For more information, see http://www.mtu.edu/news/stories/2015/june/parade-nations-announces-its-2015-theme.html.

African Dance Sessions at the SDC

African Dance Sessions are running running every Saturday at 11:00 am in the SDC dance studio. African dance combines rigorous steps and movements accompanied with contemporary Afro-beats. It is a fun way to get active and break some sweat. The cost is $7 per session. This session is open to everyone.

Registration Open for the The Biggest Mover Competition

Register by July 5 at MTU.2ACT.co for the Biggest Mover Competition to challenge yourself with fun activities that promote a healthy lifestyle. Incentives will be available throughout the competition as well as a Grand Prize of an Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board after the competition closes! The competition runs for 6 weeks starting on July 6 and ending on August 14.

To be eligible for this competition you must:

  • Be an active Michigan Tech Student (Enrolled in courses for Fall 2015)

  • Have a Michigan Tech email

  • Have a Michigan Tech M#

  • Have Internet Access

There are 350 Points Possible each week that consist of Physical Activity, Healthy Eating, De-stressing Activity, and a Bonus Activity.

Prizes:

  • The first 25 participants to join the challenge  will receive a Travel Cup  for salad, veggies, etc.

  • Participants who obtain 200 or more points after week 1 will receive a water bottle

  • Participants who obtain 800 or more points after week 3 will receive a Cinch Sack/Back pack

  • Participants who obtain 1350 points after week 5 will be entered into thedrawing for a Stand up Paddle Board (1 available valued at a $750 value )

*Prizes may differ than the examples pictured above*

*All prizes must be picked up from the Outdoor Recreation and Wellness Center by August 31, 2015.


Little Huskies Scholarship Application Deadline Set for July 17

Please be aware that Little Huskies Child Development Center has scholarships available to families through the Access to High Quality Early Childhood Education Scholarship Fund. Families are welcome to apply for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.

The purpose of the scholarship fund is to remove financial roadblocks to allow Michigan Tech’s most needy families access to high-quality early childhood education at Little Huskies. The focus demographics are undergraduate, graduate and low-income employee families. Their success at Michigan Tech is a guiding principle. Please go to Michigan Tech Childcare for more information and an application form.

A completed application and all required materials must be submitted and received no later than 5:00 p.m. on July 17, 2015 for the 2015-2016 academic year. Intro to Golf Sign Up and OAP Backyard Event

Summer Programming event hosted by Student Activities will take place on Thursday, June 25 at the Outdoor Adventure Program Backyard from 1-3:00 PM. Try a healthy snack of Avocado Black Bean Dip served with Corn Chips. A tasty summer snack!

Also, sign up for the upcoming Intro to Golf event will take place during this time. Its just a $5.00 deposit that will be refunded to you once the group lesson is complete. The dates of the Golf event will be on July 13 and 20 from approximately 3:30 -5:30. Transportation is provided from the OAP to the Portage Golf Course at which time a group Golf lesson with Course Manager, Mark Maroste, will take place. This is a great opportunity to learn the basics of Golf for free!

Move In Volunteer Opportunities for Fall 2015

Welcoming new students and their families is one of the most exciting times on campus. Student organizations are invited to help welcome in-coming students during move-in onSaturday, August 22 and Sunday, August 23. Your group can sign up for one two-hour shift or multiple shifts. This is a great service opportunity for your organization!

Understanding Lean Concepts Workshop with Hands-On Simulations
Ready to have some fun and gain a basic understanding of lean concepts and tools? Lean is one of the top skills requested by employers in nearly all industries and non-profits, including healthcare and service.
During this free half-day workshop, you’ll participate in four hands-on simulations that demonstrate the key elements of lean: pull and flow, value add, set-up reduction and workplace organization.
It will be held from 9 a.m. to noonMonday, June 22, in the Memorial Union Building Ballroom B. Students are welcome.
The workshop will be delivered by Jean Cunningham. Jean is principle of Jean Cunningham Consulting, which provides lean business management services including workshops, kaizen events and strategic coaching. She speaks at lean conferences and teaches Lean Accounting for the Ohio State University Master of Business Operational Excellence Program.
Jean Cunningham is widely recognized for her pioneering work in Lean Accounting, IT, HR and other non-production functions (Lean Business Management, The Lean Office). She is the co-author of Real Numbers (Lean Accounting) and Easier, Simpler, Faster (Lean IT), which won the 2004 and 2008 Shingo Prize for Research respectively. Jean was previously the CFO at Lantech Inc. and Marshfield Door Systems and the voluntary CFO for the Association of Manufacturing Excellence. She has a BS in Accounting from Indiana University and an MBA from Northeastern University’s Executive Program.
Jean will also be available at 1 p.m. on June 22 in the MUB Alumni Lounge B for informal discussions on any Lean topic.
This workshop is presented by Michigan Tech’s Office of Continuous Improvement. It is partially funded by the Visiting Women & Minority Lecturer/Scholar Series (VWMLS) which is funded by a grant to the Office of Institutional Equity from the State of Michigan’s King-Chavez-Parks Initiative.

Come check out the High Ropes course for only $5.00! From 2:00 – 4:00 PM on Saturday, June 13 participants will get the opportunity  to go up and experience Tech’s high ropes course without the need of a large group.

Khana Khazana Presents Hawaiian Chicken

This week the Khana Khazana food trailer presents a C-Cubed style luncheon featuring sweet Hawaiian Barbecued Huli Huli Chicken. It’s served with sides of fresh corn tomato salad, creamy potato salad with lemon and fresh herbs and a mango milk shake to help cool you off in the Summer sun. The trailer is in the MUB Circle from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.

Camp Stove Cooking Demo

Student employees of the Outdoor Recreation and Wellness Center will show you how to cook a dew different delicious and simple meals on a camp stove. The event will be held in the OAP backyard on June 11 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. Turkey and Hummus, and vegetarian Cucumber and Hummus Pita Pockets will be served during the demonstration.

Paddle the Portage Event Hosted by OAP

This is your chance to try out kayaking or canoeing on the Portage Canal, June 11 from 5PM – 8PM.  It’ll be a nice leisurely paddle open to all skill levels; great for those who want to experience campus from a different perspective. This event is $20 per person. Please sign up at the OAP (207 East St) prior to the event.


Khana Khazana Feaures Japanese Food

This week’s Khana Khazana food trailer will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday in the MUB Circle. Friday’s feature is Japanese Chicken Katsu Curry, a combination of deep fried chicken cutlets and a rich and delicious curry sauce. The sauce is generally quite mild which makes it great for people who don’t like spicy foods. The sauce is made by frying together curry powder, flour, and oil along with other ingredients to make a roux. The roux is then added to stewed meat, onions, carrots and potatoes, then simmered until thickened. There will be a butternut squash dish as a vegetarian option. Credit and debit cards accepted.


Join the OAP for a backpacking trip to Isle Royale

Join the OAP as we head to Isle Royale June 22-26. We will be leaving early Monday June 22 and taking the Isle Royale Queen IV out of Copper Harbor. For just $250, you can cross this experience off your bucket list. The price includes transportation from Houghton to Copper Harbor, the ferry to the island and back, as well as food while on the island, daily permit fees and group gear (tents, cooking equipment, etc.). If you are in need of other equipment, it can be rented at a 50% discount from the OAP.

Ice Programs starting in June

The ice will be back in the MacInnes Ice Arena beginning June 5! To celebrate, several ice programs will be starting as well.

Hockey Programs

Drop-in hockey for mites through high school will be offered June 5-7. Other programs such as Total Skills & Power Skating and Hockey FUNdamentals are also open for registration.

Public Skating

Public Skating will begin Sunday, June 7, and continue throughout the summer. Free to SDC members and Michigan Tech students, included in select Friday and Sunday daily pass purchases or $3 at the SDC Ticket Office for skating only.

Skating Programs

Skating Programs such as Learn to Skate and Skate Up are open for registration.

Private Ice Rentals

The ice is also available to rent. For more information, visit MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

Two Spin Classes Offered

Whether you’re a novice rider or a serious cyclist, Spinning has you covered! You make your spin workout is as intense as you want it to be.

This summer, we offer 2 great spin class options – Power Pedal and Spin Express. Power Pedal runs Tuesday/Thursday, 7-7:50 a.m., and Wednesday9-9:50 a.m. Spin Express is great if you’re short on time! The class meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:10-12:50 p.m.

Spin class punch cards are available online or at the SDC ticket office and can be used toward either class. Daily passes are also available.
