REMINDER: Late Night Programming Presents Comedian, Eric Schwartz

Come out to see comedian, Eric Schwartz, Saturday, August 29 from 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM at the Rosza Center.  An unassuming nerd unleashes a mind-blowing show filled with musical comedy, physical antics, multicultural satire and social commentary.  Eric Schwartz is one of the most creative and original comedians working today, earning the description, “everything there is to love about entertainment.” With appearances on The Tonight Show, Showtime, Comics Unleashed, BET and more, this comedian’s stand up, songs and characters are spreading worldwide!

REMINDER: An Afternoon on the Town

On Saturday, August 29 from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM, join your fellow classmates for An Afternoon on the Town. This annual Michigan Tech event spans from campus, down College Ave., and through the downtown Houghton business district. Area businesses and services will be participating and handing out food, coupons, and other giveaways to showcase what they have to offer. This is a great opportunity to get acquainted with the area and make you feel at home with the community.

You will also have the opportunity to enter into our prize giveaway! The grand prize this year is a GoPro with several other great prizes from area businesses!

Khana Khazana Serves Mexican Food

Mexican cuisine is on the menu at Friday’s Khana Khazana Food Truck in the MUB Circle. Serving is from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM. On Friday’s menu is Pollo Borracho (drunken chicken); chicken, raisins, almonds and green olives cooked in sherry and served over basmati rice; black bean and corn salad, black beans, corn, tomato, red pepper and avocado with red wine vinegar and cilantro; and chilaquiles—a casserole of tortilla chips mixed with eggs and salsa, topped with cheese and served with re-fried beans.


 

Keweenaw Color Run Seeking Volunteers

We want you to help us kick off this years Pride Week at Michigan Tech with the 2015 Keweenaw Color Run! This event is meant to bring students and community members from different backgrounds and cultures together for hours of entertainment and fitness.

The Event is on Sunday September 20th and we are expecting 600 participants to take to the streets to celebrate Fun and Fitness.

We need six Organizations to step up and provide at least six volunteers each for the event in order to sponsor a color station. We expect the six spots to fill up quickly, so if you are part of an organization that is interested, let us know as soon as possible to get a spot.

Time 9:30 till cleaned up (Around 11:45AM)
Cost: FREE if you volunteer!

What you get: Free Cookies, Free event shirts, the opportunity to throw 100’s of pounds of color powder on students and community, Volunteer hours, Satisfaction etc.

Husky Tae Kwon Do Club Practice

Meeting times:

  • Monday, Wednesday and Friday 5:30-7:00pm ROTC Gym (room 100)
  • Saturdays:  4-6pm SDC Dance Room

Our current club practice schedule can be found HERE.

Self-Defense Seminar

Come and learn basic and advanced self-defense techniques with the Husky Tae Kwon Do club on Sunday, August 30 from 1-2 PM in the SDC Dance Studio. Wear comfortable clothing. This class is free!

Husky Food Access Network (FAN) Now Open

Do you need food but can’t afford it? Know someone struggling to put meals on the table? No one in our campus community has to go hungry. Husky FAN has many resources available. From our on-campus Pantry in the Hamar House to emergency meal packets you can access 24/7 from Public Safety, we’re working to reduce the stress of food insecurity at Michigan Tech.

Constitution Day September 17

Constitution Day is Thursday, September 17.  Activities will include a student essay contest.  Please watch for further information on the essay question and where to send submissions.  There will be First through Third prizes of gift cards to the Campus Bookstore!
Other activities planned for Constitution Day include:
1:30 PM at the Tech Husky – Announcement of essay contest winners, Husky Pep Band, Reading of the Constitution​, and student government organization booths.
1:30-3:00 PM at the Library Pavilion – Voter Registration with the Houghton City Clerk
Rain location for the above will be the MUB Commons.
There will also be a display of Constitution related holdings in the main hall of the J. Robert Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library.

Campus Bookstore Now Selling FitBit

The Campus Bookstore is now selling FitBit which monitors your daily activities, and  a daily planner that includes the Michigan Tech Academic Calendar.

Also, Women’s Career Apparel is starting to arrive in time for the Career Fair. and we are stocking a daily planner that includes the Michigan Tech Academic Calendar.

This session will discuss the conditions of academic probation and how to get back into good standing. It will also discuss resources and strategies to encourage ongoing academic success.

Procrastination, prioritization, motivation and organization: Get time on your side
Time management is really effective self-management. Understand how to avoid time wasting pitfalls, and learn the tools to help you make the most effective use of your time.

Work Smarter, Not Harder
Participants attending this session will become familiar with metacognitive awareness (“thinking about thinking”), will learn to develop learning goals and how to make adjustments to be more academically successful.

Van Shuttle Service On and Off Campus

Did you know that Transportation Services has partnered with the City of Houghton and they are running a free van shuttle service on campus between the SDC, Daniell Heights and the Memorial Union?

In the afternoon, there is also a City of Houghton bus that runs from the MUB to various locations off-campus in Houghton. The Fall schedule will go into effect on August 31, 2015. See Services Offered for more information.
