K Day09052014_0033K-Day Organization 2016 Application Now Available

K-Day, short for Keweenaw Day, is an annual tradition at Michigan Tech held on the Friday of the week of Labor Day. Each year on K-Day, classes release at noon so our students can celebrate their beautiful surroundings in the Keweenaw Peninsula and learn about ways to get involved and connected at Tech.

Indian cuisine poster_July 1, 2016Khana Khazana Serving Indian Cuisine

Tastes of India are on tap Friday at Khana Khazana. Serving is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the food trailer in the MUB circle opposite the library.

The menu includes Chicken Do Pyaza—chicken curry cooked in tomato gravy with onion, Rajma Masala—kidney beans steamed and cooked with vegetables, Peanut Salad— A variety of vegetables and peanuts with a touch of Indian taste and Kheer/Payasam—sago dessert with milk and dried fruits.

The cost is $6.95 for the full meal.


Paddle Demo at Princes Point

The Outdoor Adventure Program is hosting a free paddle demo with paddle boards and kayaks on Thursday, July 7 from 1-3 p.m. at Prince’s Point. Instruction, life jackets and boards/kayaks provided.

Sunset Cruise #1 Sign Up During Paddle Demo

Back by popular demand, Sunset Cruise on the Isle Royale Queen IV in Copper Harbor! The cruise will be held on Friday, July 15. SIGN UP is July 7 during the Paddle Board Demo at Princes Point from 1-3 p.m. If you are unable to attend at that time please come to Student Activities with your $5.00 and ID on Friday, July 8. No early registration permitted.

Transportation by bus is provided and required for this event. The bus will leave the Michigan Tech Library Bus stop promptly at 6:15. The bus will return between 10:30 and 11 p.m. so plan accordingly. Food is permitted on the boat. Food will not be provided but there are light concessions for sale during the cruise (chips, pop, candy.)

This is a student event but spouses and children are welcome to attend (this does not include parents of students.) The cost is $5.00 and you must show a valid student ID.

On Saturday, July 9 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. the Outdoor Adventure Program is hosting an open high ropes course at the Tech Trail Head. The cost is $5.00.

Deadline to Sign Up for Leave No Trace Training TODAY, 7/1

Looking to expand your outdoor skills? Look no further. The OAP is offering a Leave No Trace (LNT) Trainer Course here in the Keweenaw in partnership with the Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers.

This two day course assists participants in learning more about the seven principles of Leave No Trace and techniques for disseminating these low impact skills.

Trainer Courses are designed for educators, guides, agency employees and other outdoor professionals. Successful graduates of the Trainer Course gain skills to teach Leave No Trace techniques and ethics to their clients, friends and family.

Course dates are July 7-8 and the cost is $125 including an overnight camping trip the night of July 7. This course is open to anyone age 18 and over—students, staff/faculty, or community members. There is limited space in this course, so sign up now. To register, visit the site.

For those looking for a shorter experience, the OAP and the Keweenaw Land Trust will be hosting an Awareness Workshop with the Traveling Trainers on Saturday, July 9 at the Boston Pond Nature Area on US-41, just before you reach Airpark Blvd.

This event will include some education about LNT Principles and how to incorporate those into our activities as well as a clean-up activity at Boston Pond. This event is free and open to the public, youth are encouraged to attend with an adult. MOVE-IN VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES for Fall 2016

Welcoming new students and their families is one of the most exciting times on campus. Student organizations are invited to help welcome in-coming students during move-in on Saturday, August 20 and Sunday, August 21. Your group can sign up for one shift or multiple shifts. This is a great service opportunity for your organization! Please fill out the Google form to sign up to volunteer.

Move-in Volunteer Shifts:

Saturday, August 20 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Sunday, August 21 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Move-In Volunteer Participation Expectations:

•    Remember that you are representing your Student Organization and Michigan Technological University. First impressions are very important to new students and their family members.

•    Wear apparel that represents your Student Organization or Michigan Tech only.

•    Wear clothing that is neat and appropriate (no holes, no hats, and no sunglasses are permitted).

•    Wear comfortable, closed toe shoes (athletic shoes recommended).

•    Volunteers may not recruit or pass out invitations/flyers of any kind.

•    Volunteers must help everyone, not just the people you might want to get to know.

•    Please remember that some students and families may not want your help. Please be considerate and ask if they would like assistance first, before grabbing items.

•    Arrive 10-15 minutes early to check in at the Wadsworth Hall Reception Desk in order to get to your assigned location on time for the start of your shift.

•    Work with University, Orientation, and Housing and Residential Life staffs who are also assigned to assist with the move-in process.
