K-Day, short for Keweenaw Day, is an annual tradition at Michigan Tech held on the Friday of the week of Labor Day. Each year on K-Day, classes release at noon so our students can celebrate their beautiful surroundings in the Keweenaw Peninsula and learn about ways to get involved and connected at Tech. K-Day typically sees around 3,500-4,000 students attend, so be sure to check out this amazing event so you don’t miss out!
Transportation from Michigan Tech to the park is provided at no cost.
Khana Khazana featuring Middle Eastern Cuisine
Khana Khazana moves back indoors in the newly-remodeled Memorial Union Building Friday with tastes of the Middle East.
Serving is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday in the MUB Food Court. The menu includes:
- Shysh Tawuq (Chicken Grill)—A terrific appetizer of minced chicken mixed with onions and spices.
- Falafel—Deep-fried ball made from ground chickpeas served in a pita.
- Homemade pita bread.
- Tabbouleh—Traditional salad made of bulgar (dried cracked wheat), tomatoes, finely-chopped parsley, mint, cilantro and onion seasoned with olive oil, lemon juice and salt.
- Hummus—Spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas blended with tahini (condiment made from toasted sesame seeds), olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic.
The cost is $6.95 for the full meal which includes a fountain drink

OAP Celebrating 10 Years with Breakers to Bridge Paddle Festival
Join the Outdoor Adventure Program and the Keweenaw Land Trust to celebrate the culturally significant Mine Ruins, virtually untouched waterfalls, coastlines and crags by paddling 10 miles from Breakers To Bridge. This event is in support of the Keweenaw Land Trust’s mission of protecting land and water access for public use and to celebrate OAP’s tenth anniversary.
The 5Point Film Festival is on Friday Sept. 9 and the Silent Auction to support the KLT and the 10 mile paddle from Breakers to Bridge is Saturday Sept 10.

Canterbury House to Host John Shelby Spong
Sunday, September 11 from 2 – 4PM in the MUB Ballroom
World-famous biblical scholar, writer, speaker and human rights champion John Shelby Spong will speak to the intellectual and spiritual challenges of the 21st century during his visit to Michigan Tech.
As a visiting lecturer at Harvard, Cambridge and universities and churches throughout North America and the English-speaking world, Spong is one of the leading spokespersons for liberal Christianity.
He has initiated landmark discussions of controversies, particularly on racial inclusion, women’s ordination and justice for gay, lesbian and transgender people and has become an outspoken advocate for change. Spong proposes a Christianity based on justice and love rather than judgment and literal-minded readings of the Bible. He argues that fundamentalism is incompatible with true Christian faith.
The talk will be followed by a Q&A and book signing by the author. The public is welcome and there is no admission.
Info Session: NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)
Are you thinking about applying for the National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship Program (GRFP) (http://www.nsfgrfp.org/)? Michigan Tech’s Research Development Office and Graduate School is offering this session for you to learn more information.
If you have research (Enterprise, SURF, Research Scholars) and leadership experience and meet the eligibility requirements, we strongly encourage you to consider applying for this prestigious fellowship. If this is the first you have heard of the program, please take the time to review information about applying (http://www.nsfgrfp.org/applicants/application_components) and the benefits: a three-year annual stipend of $34,000 along with a $12,000 cost of education allowance for the cost of tuition (http://www.nsfgrfp.org/general_resources/about).

To be eligible for the NSF GRFP, students must:
- be a US citizen, US national, or permanent resident
- intend to pursue a research-based Master’s or Ph.D. program in a GRFP-supported field
- be enrolled in an eligible program at an accredited United States graduate institution, with a US campus, by fall 2017
- be at an early stage in your graduate career
- have completed no more than twelve months of full-time graduate study (or the equivalent) as of August 1, 2016
- Effective as of the 2017 competition (Fall 2016 deadlines), graduate students are limited to only one application to the GRFP, submitted either in the first year or in the second year of graduate school. An exception is provided for first-year graduate students who applied in Fall 2015 to the 2016 GRFP competition; these individuals may apply as second-year graduate students in Fall 2016 to the 2017 GRFP competition if they are otherwise eligible.

Make A Difference on Campus – Join the Student Commission
Ever notice something about Michigan Tech that could be improved? Have you had a great idea that
would have a positive effect on other students?
If yes, you are invited and encouraged to join us at the Student Commission meetings. We look to break
down the barriers that impede student’s success, and to improve Michigan Tech’s campus environment.
You’ll get the chance to have your ideas heard by staff, faculty, university officials, and most importantly
other students. We work together to act on your idea and make changes. Past accomplishments of the
Student Commission include:
- Husky Food Access Network (Husky FAN) – The Student Commission continues to support and
- promote Husky FAN.
- Student Org Catering Menu – Student Organizations expressed concern regarding the increase in Dining Services food prices. After discussion with Dining Services a special catering menu was developed that had provided lower prices for student orgs.
- Guaranteed Parking (Lot 11) – Students questioned why this lot couldn’t be open to use after 4:00 pm. After discussion, Facilities Management opened the gate from 4:00 pm to 7:00 am.
- Transportation Services/Facilities Management Updates – Facilities Management is regularly invited to the Student Commission to provide updates, information, and answer any questions the group may have.
- Maintenance Direct Work Order System – The Student Commission has promoted the Facilities Management “Maintenance Direct Work Order System” website so students can report any maintenance issues they may notice around campus.
- Sustainability on Campus – Recycling continues to be improved and expanded on campus

Community Service will be followed with a Celebration of Community / Face to Facepotluck and cookout at Hancock Beach beginning at 5 pm. (Hancock Canal Road, or M203 just on the edge of town) All are invited, whether or not you participated in any work projects or not. People of the Copper Country offer a spirit of hospitality and welcome to ALL people!
