WMTU 91.9fm Houghton’s annual music festival, Keweenawesomefest, is back! Get ready for March 17th and 18th, when 12 awesome acts are going to blow your minds! KFest is happening in McArdle Theater in the Walker Arts & Humanities Building. Doors open at 5:30, music starts at 6:00 and goes until 12:00 midnight. Painting for a Purpose: MTU Relay for Life is holding a canvas painting event on Monday, March 20th at 7 pm in the MUB. The cost is $7 for students, $10 for adults. Rozsa Presents a “Marimba Concert & Poetry Night
What is a Marimba? Think of a very large wooden xylophone, the national instrument of Guatemala. The Rozsa Center and Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents Guatemalan writer Hugo Gordillo, and collaborator Zach l’Italian, who will read selections of Gordillo’s new poems (in Spanish and in English), in a “Marimba Concert & Poetry Night,” on Thursday, March 23 at 6:00 PM in the Rozsa lobby. This event was developed in collaboration with Michigan Tech music students and conducted by Mike Christiansen, Michigan Tech’s Director of Bands. The Marimba Concert and Poetry event are free and all are welcome. The Michigan Tech Marimbist Band will play several marimba selections, arranged by Mike Christianson. This event is the closing reception for ChickenBus: a U.S. Guatemalan experience, an exhibit by VPA faculty member Lisa Gordillo in the Rozsa gallery. Several poems in Hugo Gordillo’s collection inspired the art in this exhibit. The exhibit will be open before and after the concert.
Alpha Delta Alpha Top Chef Event
The sisters of Alpha Delta Alpha welcome you to join us for the ADA version of Top Chef! It’s going to be a night of delicious food, fun and great company! Two separate teams will be asked to create the same dish, and at the end, the dishes will be judged by one of our sisters. So grab a friend, and head on down to the DHH kitchenette on Thursday, March 23rd at 5 p.m. We hope to see you there!

Celebrate Norooz, Iranian New Year, with the Iranian Community at Michigan Tech
Iranian Community at Michigan Tech is celebrating the Iranian New Year (Norooz) for the fourth time, on Michigan Tech Campus. Last year, President Mroz and the Provost attended our Norooz event, for the first time. I would like to share the information about this year’s event with you:

Dr. Lily Afshar, a world-class guitarist, from Memphis, TN
She is a Professor of Guitar, at the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, University of Memphis, and the first woman in the world to be awarded a Doctor of Music in Guitar Performance in 1989. (Click for full biography)

Celebrate 50 Years of Jazz at Michigan Tech
Join us in celebrating “50 Years Of Great Jazz At Michigan Tech – The Gold Standard”, at our annual Don Keranen Memorial Concert, the final jazz concert of our performance season, on Saturday, March 25, 7:30 PM at the Rozsa Center. There will be a reception following the concert in the Rozsa Lobby.
According to Mike Irish, Director of Jazz Studies at Michigan Tech, “Don originated the Jazz Lab Band in 1967, and since then, it has grown into one of the most respected non-major jazz programs in the country…We have so much to be thankful for from these 50 years! We hope that you enjoy this evening’s concert on many levels. Please join us for a reception in the Rozsa lobby following the concert!

Upper Peninsula – NE Wisconsin ACS Student Research Symposium
The UP Local section of the American Chemical Society is hosting its annual student research symposium on March 25, at the campus of Northern Michigan University in Marquette.
This event has been a great opportunity for undergrad and graduate students to present their chemistry-related research in a relaxed, poster-style format. This has been a great event in the past, where we get lots of participation from many different academic departments.

The Houghton-Hancock Rotaract Club is excited to present the Modern Manhattan Gala themed Charity Ball on Saturday April 1 at the Continental Fire Co. from 7:00 to 11:30 pm.
All proceeds from ticket sales will be given to the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter, which offers victims of domestic violence, and their children, temporary shelter and provides counseling to achieve safety and find resources to escape violence and abuse. All services are free and confidential.

Night of Hope sponsored by Relay for Life at Michigan Tech and the Houghton Community Relay
Relay for Life of Michigan Tech will be co-hosting an event called the Night of Hope with the Houghton Community Relay on April 8th. This event will be in the Rozsa from 5-8pm. This event will be focused on honoring survivors of cancer, and those who have been caregivers for loved ones with cancer. Tickers are $10, and this ticket includes dinner! Students who have survived cancer also have an opportunity to get their ticket sponsored by Aspirus.
There will be a silent auction, Survivor and Caregiver ceremonies, and informative presentations. Students can contact Brooke Basto at bebasto@mtu.edu to purchase a ticket. Please help support the American Cancer Society and all of the work they do to support people after they hear the words “you have cancer.”

Michigan Tech Choirs Present Benefit Concert: Music for a Sacred Space
Please join us for an evening of sacred choral music presented in its natural habitat, the local treasure that is the magnificent space of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Linden. The concert will feature music of many different countries and cultures, with devotional music ranging from South Africa, Germany, England, Canada, and 19th-century America. The Michigan Tech Concert Choir and conScience: Michigan Tech Chamber Singers, Jared Anderson, Conductor, present Music for a Sacred Space on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at 7:30 PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Lake Linden.
Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning Saturday April 1st
Student Activities, the Undergraduate Student Government, and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion are hosting Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning, a spring semester day of service similar to the fall semester event, Make a Difference Day.
Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning will take place on Saturday, April 1, 2017. Check-in and educational demonstrations about Cesar Chavez will occur on Friday, March 31 in the Memorial Union Building Alumni Lounge from 3:00-5:00pm. If you’re unable to check-in on Friday, we will also have check-in on Saturday, April 1 in the same location from 8:00-10:00am
Volunteer projects will vary but most will happen locally from 10am-12pm. Everyone who participates will receive a free t-shirt for their volunteer efforts!

Not only will tributes appear in the commencement program, but they will also be displayed on the new video scoreboard in the ice arena! It’s gonna be crazy!
You have the option to upload a picture with your tribute! Maybe a special picture of you and your parents? Spouse? Best friend? Imagine that person/s sitting in the audience and seeing the photo and tribute appear on the big screen!

Food Pantry Volunteers Needed
Husky Food Access Network (HuskyFAN) is in need of volunteers to keep the food pantry open. The pantry is open from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday.
Volunteers are needed for any amount of time they are able to offer.

University Launches CommUNITY Campaign
The CommUNITY campaign is a new campus-wide effort to promote the values set forth in Michigan Tech’s Strategic Plan.
“We Inspire Community” is the first value listed in the Strategic Plan. It states, “We inspire an engaged community that actively seeks improvement through acceptance and understanding.”
The CommUNITY campaign will include promotional materials and programming geared toward raising awareness and promoting actions that reflect these values.
Throughout the year, you will be introduced to multiple ways to engage with this campaign.

Sexual Violence Support Group
T.E.A.L (To Empower And Liberate) is a group that provides support to Michigan Tech Students who have experienced sexual violence including childhood sexual abuse or sexual assault. The group provides support to individuals of recent or past sexual violence in a safe, non-judgmental group. With the help of group support individuals can find understanding, help by sharing their struggles and triumphs with one another, and begin to put their lives back together. Through discussion, support and education we can help one another. This group meets every other Thursday from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. The next meeting is Thursday March 30, 2017 on campus.
