Outdoor Adventure Program

Join the Outdoor Adventure Program for your next summer adventure – the high ropes course! Four open sessions throughout the summer beginning May 18.

First session: May 18, 10 am-1 pm
$5/person
Open high ropes lets you try a couple of the elements. After climbing the access pole, choose a path across the course & then zip-line down to exit!

CH4800-01 The Chemistry and Biology of Brewing 

The Chemistry and Biology of Brewing is being offered this summer as a 2 credit course. If you have ever wondered about the processes included in brewing, such as the best water, grain, and fermentation process to use, this is your chance to have these questions answered. Please note that the lab course will apply analytical and biochemical methods for identifying critical factors in the fermentation process. Students will learn how to characterize ingredients and fermentation product. Age requirement is 18+. Please see the attached flyer for more details and email Dr. Tajiri at mtajiri@mtu.edu for any questions. 


First Annual Lean Conference at Tech

On May 20, Michigan Tech will host the First Annual Copper Country Lean Conference. During this one-day conference, experiences will be shared in large and small group sessions and in a poster showcase. Many different industries will be represented. This conference provides us with an exciting opportunity to connect with each other, learn from others’ experience, and share our successes. Register now! The Lean Conference

During the registration process, you’ll be asked if you’d like to volunteer to assist with the conference. Volunteers will be asked to attend a brief organization meeting and assigned to tasks like conference set up, registration, control center staffing, session moderators, and clean up. Participating volunteers will have their registration fees refunded directly after the conference. Many volunteers are needed, so please consider this opportunity!

The SDC Summer Building Schedule

The SDC summer building schedule is now available. Summer hours will begin Sunday, May 5 and run through Sunday, August 25, 2019.

NOTE: The schedule pdf now contains a second page highlighting all open rec times in the SDC including these areas/activities: Fitness Center, locker rooms, multipurpose courts, indoor track, racquetball courts, ice arena public skating, OAP high ropes course, adult lap swim (no dive boards), open swim (4 lap lanes available), family swim (no lap lanes) and family swim/log rolling (no lap lanes).

Dates to remember:

May 27 and July 4 – The SDC will be closed for the holidays.

May 5-10 – Annual steam shutdown (no hot water in the SDC, but we will remain open).

May 5 – August 4 – Lap pool ONLY will be open (dive tank will be closed). See schedule for specific swim options/times.

June 4

The Ice arena re-opens (this is approximate with install beginning May 28).

August 5 – September 2

Both pools will be CLOSED for mechanical repairs and general maintenance. They are scheduled to reopen Tuesday, September 3.

Summer Strength & Conditioning Camp
Designed for athletes looking to improve their performance and fitness level, the Michigan Tech University Summer Strength & Conditioning Camp offers sport-specific, collegiate-level physical training to prepare athletes for the upcoming season.
Lead by the MTU Strength & Conditioning staff, Tyler Shelast & Devin Pindral, participants will learn and develop proper training techniques in order to improve overall fitness, increase performance potential, and decrease the risk of injury. Athletes will engage in a progressive training program with the intent of improving agility, strength, flexibility, speed, and strength. An emphasis will be placed on performance tracking throughout the camp, so athletes will be able to monitor their progress in detail throughout.
  • Dates: June 10 – August 22, 2019 (10 weeks) – off 4th of July week
  • Location: MTU Student Development Complex Varsity Football Weight Room
  • Sessions: One-hour afternoon sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays
  • Age Groups:
    • GOLD: Male & female athletes entering grades 6-8 from 1:00-2:00 pm
    • BLACK: Male & female athletes entering grades 9-12 from 2:00-3:00 pm
  • Appx. Timeline of Phases:
    • Weeks 1-2: Integration (Initial Assessment)
    • Weeks 3-6: Accumulation
    • Weeks 7-9: Intensification
    • Week 10: Peak (Final Assessment)
  • Group Size: 6-10 per age group (1:6-10 coach to athlete)
  • Attire: Comfortable athletic clothing (t-shirt, shorts, leggings, etc.) & appropriate athletic footwear (non-marking sole cross trainers and/or weight lifting shoes)
  • Additional benefit: 3-Month SDC membership for June 10-September 10, includes use of the fitness center (age 16+ years), pool, locker rooms and multipurpose room.
  • Program cost: $300/participant
  • Registration deadline: June 3.
