Supporting Your Peer’s Mental Health

Tuesday, January 31st at 6 PM

For too many students, mental health is the leading reason they struggle in school or don’t graduate. We know our community wants to help, but you may not always know how. Join Brianna Kratz, Assistant Director of Residence Education and Mental Health First Aid trainer, to learn how to:

  • promote self-care with your peers 
  • support individual and group mental health
  • create a safe space to discuss mental health concerns
  • recognize signs that someone might need help
  • access other useful resources and training

We hope you will join our campus community in supporting well-being!

McNair Scholars Program: Want to go to Grad School for free?

Have you ever thought about doing research and getting paid to do it? Have you ever thought about going to grad school and not having to worry about the burden of taking out a student loan? Have you heard about Michigan Tech’s McNair Scholars Program?

The MTU McNair Scholars program allows students to:

  • Earn money to do summer research in your field of study plus free room and board
  • Receive support to present research at regional and national conferences
  • Get loan-free support for graduate school

Mind Trekkers

Join Mind Trekkers as we travel to Escanaba January 26th-27th, to host the Hidden Coast Festival!

Together with Bay College and area businesses and community organizations we will excite over 600 8th-grade students and showcase incredible opportunities and careers in STEM fields.  Transportation, lodging, and a daily stipend are provided! Mind Trekkers events also count towards service hour goals!

March for Life: Houghton-Hancock

Students for Life at Michigan Tech invites you to a March for Life right here in Houghton! We will carry signs with peaceful, positive, pro-life statements on them and walk from the Rosza Center lawn to the Life Outreach Center in Hancock, where refreshments will be served. The event begins at 2:30pm outside of the Rosza on Saturday, January 21; transportation will be provided back to the Rosza after the walk if needed.

Explore Majors in Social Sciences Open House

This is a casual, drop-in style event where students can learn about majors within the Social Sciences department, including: Anthropology, History, Policy and Community Development, Social Sciences, and Sustainability Science and Society. There will be pizza and snacks. Faculty and current students will be on hand to discuss options and share experiences. All current or future MTU students with some curiosity about any of these majors or the Social Sciences department are welcome! This is informal with no specific agenda so come for any period of time between 5:00-6:30.

Students for Sustainability

Students for Sustainability are starting out the semester with the Winter 2023 Clothing Swap!

If you are looking for a chance to clean out your closet, get some new clothes, or get FREE clothing, The Clothing Swap is a fantastic way to get rid of your unwanted clothes and get new clothes in an environmentally conscious way. The Clothing Swap is completely FREE through the use of donations. You do not have to donate to participate! To donate, please bring any used clothing to any of the provided bins in Wads, DHH, McNair, the Library, and the MUBCheck out @s4s_mtu on Instagram for clothing bin locations. Donations are also accepted the days of the event as well.

Everyone is welcome to stop by the Library between 11am-3pm on Thursday, January 26th and Friday, January 27th to find some new free clothes!

Cookies, Crafts, and Conversations about Stalking

The student organization, SAVE, is hosting an event for Stalking Awareness Month. Students are invited to come to enjoy cookies, cocoa, and crafts while learning about stalking behaviors and resources. This event will take place on Wednesday, January 18th, at 6:00 p.m. in the WADS Annex Room. Dial Help will be there, offering volunteer hours. We can’t wait to see you there!

Title IX – National Sexual Misconduct Campus Climate Survey

Starting on Monday, January 16, 2023, all graduate and undergraduate students over the age of 18 will be asked to participate in the National Sexual Misconduct Campus Climate Survey. This survey is anonymous and only takes about 15 minutes. Students will receive an email with a link to the survey and will have a chance to win prizes.

By completing this survey, it will provide Michigan Tech with important information on campus sexual misconduct prevalence and responses. Preventing and remedying sexual misconduct is essential to creating a safer and more inclusive campus. Title IX is dedicated to making sure that all students have the opportunity to participate in and benefit from our programs and activities.

It’s WIBIT Wednesday!

Come make a splash with our new inflatable pool obstacle course called the WIBIT! You can test your individual skills on the course or challenge your friend to a race across the obstacles. Events will be held this spring for current MTU Students and SDC Access Pass Holders (minimum 1-month). Student/Access ID is required to be presented upon entry into the pool area and a swim test is required before accessing the obstacle.

Roof Shoveling with the Lutheran Collegians

Come and experience the quintessential UP winter event: shoveling a roof! The Lutheran Collegians RSO is hosting a snow shoveling event and would love for you to share in the fun and enjoy a free meal, all while serving a local church! Details are listed on the graphic.


Lunar New Year Trivia Night

SASE and Quiz Bowl will be hosting a Lunar New Year Trivia Night. Stop by to play trivia, win prizes, get snacks, and learn about Lunar New Year and Asian Cultures. People can compete in teams of up to 4 people. No prior Lunar New Year knowledge is required. There will also be a raffle at the end of the event for an opportunity for everyone to win prizes!

Bowling Night with Turning Point USA at MTU

The Center for Student Mental Health and Well-being offers a variety of group therapy sessions and workshops throughout the semester.
Group therapy can be an effective form of treatment for various reasons, including receiving support from others with a similar concern, learning more about the topic through group education, helping to feel not alone, and providing support to others in the group.

Workshops are a great option for students who wish to explore various aspects of their well-being in an informal setting. All of our workshops are led by licensed counselors, but the focus is geared toward personal exploration and development.

Join us January 18-25 for 7 Days of MUB! This is an opportunity to learn more about our organization, who we are, and how to get involved! It’s kicking off tomorrow with a Bake Not-Sale (free baked goods!) in the library from 1-3. Comedian Jeff Scheen

Jeff Scheen grew up in Northern Michigan surrounded by trees and dirt roads. That will make any kid a weirdo, and Jeff has no problem telling you about it! Join us in the MUB Ballroom this Saturday from 9-10pm for some great laughs!

Laser Tag

Join us, with help from local company Respawn, for some laser tag! Signups are at the door and include at least two 10-minute games of two teams of four. We hope to see you at the SDC Multipurpose Room on January 28 from 2-4!
