Free Professional Headshots for Students at Career Fair

The Office of Alumni Engagement is offering free professional headshots for students during Spring Career Fair, taken perfectly for your Handshake or LinkedIn profiles. A photographer will take headshots on February 22, 2023, from 12-4 p.m. at the SDC. 

Photos will be taken first come, first served. Each student will take (1) test shot and then have a limit of (3) posed shots. 

Please sign up if you intend to utilize this free service. The deadline to sign up is 4 p.m. on February 21, 2023. This sign-up is for us to have an approximation of expected crowds and does not guarantee you will be able to get in at that exact time.

In partnership with USG and GSG, the Office of Alumni Engagement will be serving free chili starting at 7 p.m. until it is gone. Stop by and enjoy a free, warm meal during the All-Nighter festivities!


Keweenaw Youth for Climate Action

The Keweenaw Youth for Climate Action (KYCA) is hosting a divestment information session on February 15th from 5-6 pm in Fisher 135. Over the last few years, we have been trying to get Michigan Tech to divest from fossil fuels and are putting on this info session to help inform the students about what we are doing. Come with questions and we will love to answer them.

ABOUT MIKEY DAY

Mikey Day recently completed his sixth season as a cast member on “Saturday Night Live” after joining the show as a writer for the 2013-14 season.

During his first season as a cast member, Day gained recognition for his wildly popular “Haunted Elevator (ft. David S. Pumpkins)” sketch with Tom Hanks as well as his Donald Trump Jr. impression.

Day is the host of Netflix’s hit baking contest series “Is It Cake?,” which will return for a second season.

Day was a member of the Groundlings comedy troupe in Los Angeles and a cast member on Nick Cannon’s MTV comedy series “Wild ‘N Out” for seven seasons. He was also a head writer on Cartoon Network’s “Incredible Crew,” co-head writer and cast member on NBC’s “Maya & Marty” and co-writer for the 2016 comedy “Brother Nature.” Alongside “SNL” writer Streeter Seidell, Day wrote “Home Sweet Home Alone.”

Tickets are $20 for the general public but are free for students.


Winter Carnival Book Sale @ the Library

Friends of the Michigan Tech Library presents their Winter Carnival Book Sale, Saturday, February 11, 2023 the lobby of the Van Pelt and Opie Library from 11am to 4pm. Hundreds and hundreds of gently used books for sale at $2 or less!  Fiction, history, arts and crafts, some DVDs, and more! Cash, Card, and Check accepted. 


SDH Open House

The Sustainability Demonstration House tenants invite you to attend our upcoming open house during Carni Week on Thursday, February 9th, from 4-7 pm!

The house is open to students, their families, and community members. Please come to tour the house, see our systems, and learn how you can practice sustainable living too! Please see the flyer attached for more information. 

The house is located at 21680 Woodland Rd, two houses down from McNair and Hillside Place. For the first time since the pandemic hit, we will have free pizza available while supplies last! We hope to see you there!

Upcoming USG Elections

It’s election season! Nominations for Undergraduate Student Government Executive Board positions and At-Large Representative positions are now open. On Monday, February 20th, elections for these positions will open. 

Executive Board positions include President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. At-Large Representatives specifically hold the responsibility of having the entire undergraduate population as their constituency. 

USG is a body of undergraduate students that represents the interests of the student body through advocacy, meetings with members of the administration, and passing legislation. USG is also responsible for allocating the Student Activity Fee for RSOs budgets and providing additional funding through the Opportunity and Reserve Funds. 

USG members attend a weekly body meeting, work on a committee, and serve three weekly office hours. You are strongly encouraged to nominate someone you believe would be a good fit for USG and to vote in the elections that open on Monday, February 20th, and Monday, March 20th!


PADI Open Water SCUBA Course

Registration for the next Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) Open Water SCUBA Course will open next Friday (February 10) at 8 a.m.

The course is conducted over two weekends and includes:

  • Ten hours of academic instruction (some coursework to be completed independently),
  • Ten hours of confined water training (SDC Pool), and
  • Four certification dives in Lake Superior (Marquette).

Upon registration, students will be given all required reading material and paperwork to complete prior to the start of the course. Students must be 18 years old and be able to swim 200 yards comfortably.

Course Dates and Times:

  • Friday, March 24 — 5-10 p.m., SDC
  • Saturday, March 25 — 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., SDC
  • Sunday, March 26 — 8 a.m. to noon, SDC
  • Saturday and Sunday, April 15-16, or Saturday and Sunday, April 22-23 — Open Dives in Marquette (exact location and time TBA)

Cost is $575 per person (includes all instruction, fees, and training materials). The deadline to register is March 17.

Join us on February 15, from 4:00 – 5:00 pm for an online presentation:  Finance Your Innovation

Presented by Chief Commercial Officer, Patrick Visser with the MTEC SmartZone, our local business incubator, this workshop will cover founder capital fundraising strategies and choices including bootstrapping, angel investment, venture capital investment, and growth capital financing.   

This workshop is open to all students.  Those interested in the New Venture Challenge will find this workshop helpful when applying to NVC and should plan to attend.

Swing Club presents

SnoBall Crash Course

Want to learn a few moves before the SnoBall on February 12th? Join the MTU Swing Club on Thursday, February 9th, for lessons on East Coast, Waltz, and Polka! The event is from 2pm-5pm, but you don’t have to stay the full three hours. Here is the schedule:

  • East Coast Lesson 2-3pm
  • Waltz from 3-4pm
  • Polka from 4-5pm 

No partner or experience needed, all are welcomed. Water breaks in between!

Winter Carnival: SnoBall 2023

Celebrate the end of Winter Carnival and enjoy some live hits from the jiving 20s performed by the MTU Jazz Lab Band! The event is free for everyone to attend. The event is brought to you by the Swing Club at Michigan Tech, Blue Key Honor Society, and the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts.

WUPFSC Spring Photo Contest 2023

The Western UP Food Systems Collaborative invites you to join us in sharing our food stories! We are hosting a photo contest to celebrate our communities’ rich foodways. You are invited to submit one or more photos you love for their look, message, or personal meaning to at least one of the following categories: 

  1. Living off the Land 
    1. Examples: Hunting, Gathering, Foraging, Food Landscapes, Health, Well-being
  2. Make It, Bake It, Preserve It
    1. Examples: Canning/Preserves, Value Added Goods, Food Dishes, Gifting Practices, Storing Produce for Winter
  3. Food as Community
    1. Examples: Sharing a dish with family, Trading, Buying from local vendors, Seed swapping, Community gardening, Sharing meals
  4. Growing Practices & Food Prep
    1. Examples: Compost, Crop covers, Hoop houses, Gardening, Preparations for season changes, Preparing for storing food, Preparing meals
  5. Youth (Participants who are 17 or younger)

Photos accompanied by a title and short description can be submitted by using this form. Participants are limited to 5 submissions per person. Submissions are due on February 27 at 11:59 pm EST and winners will be announced shortly thereafter. 

We hope that this contest inspires you to share stories about our community. Sharing your stories with the public is one way to generate knowledge about our community and this knowledge has the power to inspire social change. Please invite others to contribute to or hear our stories – feel free to forward the attached flyer to others.

Delta Phi Epsilon 36-Hour Teeter-Totter

Delta Phi Epsilon Presents Teeter Totter for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. From Wednesday, February 8th at 8am until Thursday, February 9th at 8pm Delta Phi Epsilon will be Teeter-Tottering outside of the library for our annual 36-hour teeter-totter event for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Donations to CFF can be made at the teeter-totter site or using the QR code on the poster. We can’t wait to see you out there!


Tau Kappa Epsilon Cookies for a Cause

Tau Kappa Epsilon is hosting a fundraiser for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital during All-Nighter on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, from 6-10 PM. Tables will be set up behind their month-long statue site next to the Administration Building. Cookies with every donation (while supplies last). Suggested donation of $2-3. Hot Cocoa & IRHC Specialty Mugs

Inter-Residence Hall Council (IRHC) will be handing out hot cocoa in the new IRHC specialty mugs for this year during the Broomball All-Star Game this Wednesday. Mugs of hot cocoa will be given out starting at 8pm sharp until supplies run out. Be sure to get to the Cocoa Shack to warm up with some hot cocoa in a new IRHC mug!

Join us for the annual Bigfoot Glowshoe Event held up at the Michigan Tech Recreation Trials. The event will be a glowing good time, complete with snowshoes, glowsticks, chili and maybe even a Bigfoot sighting!
