Non-Traditional Student Group

Sometimes in your student cohorts, you may feel like the only adult in the room. In NonTra, you don’t have to be.

Introducing NonTra.

We are a group of non-traditional students who made the decision to go back to school in hopes to make a better life for ourselves.

Need a change of scenery?

Spend a half hour with peers with a bit more in common than what you’d find in your cohorts. We know you have other stuff to do.

Come to the MUB on 31 January (Wednesday) at 4:00 PM.

And when you come to the info meeting, you’ll see you’re not alone… there’s at least one more us out there.

Heikinpäivä

One of the Midwest’s premiere ethnic festivals gets underway this week with a slate of activities that will surely appeal to Finns, friends of Finns, and fans of winter alike.

The Heikinpäivä mid-winter festival, a Finnish Theme Committee creation now in its 23rd year, begins Wednesday, January 10 with a showing of the popular Finnish film “Tommy and the Wildcat” (Poika ja Ilves in Finnish) at 2 p.m. at the Finnish American Heritage Center. This
family-friendly movie about a young boy’s adventures trying to save a lynx is the first of many Heikinpäivä events designed for every age group to enjoy. Later that evening is an inkle weaving workshop conducted by the Finnish American Folk School, the first of several Folk School courses offered in conjunction with Heikinpäivä.

Along with weaving, interested folks can take classes in knitting, Karjalanpiirakka (Karelian pie) making, playing the five-string kantele, folk dancing, or making a quilt block. Schedule, registration, and pricing information about these classes can be found on the festival Web site
at pasty.com/heikki.

The festival culminates with a full day of activity on Saturday, January 27, with the famed tori market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Heikinpäivä parade gets underway at 11 a.m., followed by the increasingly popular Spiral Bear Dance and the outdoor games on Quincy Green. Later that
afternoon, and also on Quincy Green, the bravest festival-goers can partake in the revived Polar Plunge, which will take place on the Green using a portable pool. There will be a few portable saunas on-site for divers to thaw after completing their sisu-laden rite of passage. Appropriate footwear is strongly encouraged for the Plunge.

Heikinpäivä 2024 wraps up with an evening dance (Iltamat) at the Heritage Center from 7 to 10 p.m. Featuring the music of the Back Room Boys, and plenty of fun for all ages, it’s a great way to conclude the festival experience. The festival auction winners will also be drawn that evening.

For more information about Heikinpäivä, or the Finnish Theme Committee, find the festival’s page on Facebook, or visit pasty.com/heikki.
