The Open-Source Model of America: Protecting Free Speech in a Connected World

The Open-Source Model of America: Protecting Free Speech in a Connected World

The Student Affairs CommUNITY Education Team and the Bridging Community Series is pleased to announce a campus presentation by Michigan Attorney and a member of the board of directors of the ACLU of Michigan, Michael Naughton. Mr. Naughton is an experienced attorney with over 20 years of practice in the field of civil rights, technology law, criminal defense, and digital privacy. With the arrival of the fourth industrial revolution, Michael has become increasingly engaged in the specialty of emerging technologies and civil liberties. Recently, he was appointed to serve on the Michigan Judicial Council for Generative AI and the Courts Work Group.

The presentation will provide attendees with an introduction to the concept of open-source software, where anyone can view, modify, and distribute source code freely. It explores how this model has contributed to innovation and progress.

Early Voting in Michigan Starts this Saturday!

Early voting starts in Michigan this Saturday, October 26th. If you plan to vote in Michigan, you can cast your ballot in person at an early voting site before Election Day (November 5) now through Sunday, November 3rd. At early voting sites, you will receive a ballot and can insert it into a tabulator, similar to how you would vote on Election Day.

Where Can I Vote Early In Michigan?

Early voting sites are similar to Election Day polling places, however, they can be set up to serve voters from multiple cities or townships. This means that your site may be different than your normal polling location. To find your early voting site, visit the Michigan Voter Information Center and click on “your voter information”. You can then find information about early voting based on your home address. If you are voting in Houghton County, your early voting site is the Houghton City Center (616 Shelden Avenue).

Need a ride to the polls? The Voter Engagement Coalition is hosting Huskies Vote Early Day on Sunday, November 3rd from 1-3 PM between DHH and CDI. Students can catch a shuttle to City Center, celebrate engaging with the democratic process, and pick up an “I voted” sticker – especially for those who may have voted absentee and not received one!  Join us for music, games, snacks, and more to celebrate!

LeaderShape Institute® Applications are Now Open!

The LeaderShape Institute® is a four-day leadership retreat that challenges participants to lead with integrity while working towards a vision grounded in their deepest values. Through the program students will:

  1. Develop a sense of community
  2. Make meaning of their personal values and connect their actions to them
  3. Strengthen their leadership style and understand how to work with other leadership styles

Each day of the program has a different theme that builds on the previous day as the session progresses:

Day One: Living and Leading with Integrity
Day Two: Challenging What Is, Looking to What Could Be
Day Three: The Value of One, The Power of All
Day Four: Living in Possibility

The Institute utilizes highly interactive program methods rather than classroom lectures. Not a typical leadership retreat, the Institute is grounded in helping individuals identify the values they hold that lead to making a difference in the communities around them. By leading with passion, integrity, and a healthy disregard for the impossible, participants explore who they are and the impact that they want to have on communities working towards a more caring, just, and equitable society.

The LeaderShape Institute® has hosted over 1,300 Huskies since 1996. This year, the program will run from Sunday, December 15th to Wednesday, December 18th at the Ford Center in Alberta, MI. Transportation to and from the Institute, meals, and lodging are provided. Participants must be available and are expected to stay for the entire length of the Institute. There is a minimal cost of $100 for participants to attend the Institute, however, that cost is often sponsored by campus departments and organizations.

Applications for the 2025 Institute are now open! We are seeking applicants who are curious, motivated, and ready to learn – whether you are an engaged student leader on campus already or looking to take your first step on your leadership journey. We intentionally seek students with a wide variety of interests and experiences. At the core of the LeaderShape experience is understanding the value of leading with integrity and the possibilities that come from a commitment to leading with purpose.

Learn more on our website or contact us at activities@mtu.edu. Ready to commit? Apply now!

The priority deadline for applications is November 10, 2024. However, applications will continue to be accepted on a rolling basis until all spots are filled or the final application deadline on December 2, 2024
