It’s Winter Carnival time! Yesterday you received an email from me with the subject: Winter Carnival Safety Message. Please read it, it has important information to keep in mind while enjoying Winter Carnival. Remember, we want everyone to have fun but also stay safe!

Just a reminder, there should be no exams during Winter Carnival, but homework is okay as long as it was assigned ahead of time.

ChrisJones is a hypnotist, comedian and the host of the prank series Double Take on Facebook Watch. Brought to you by Blue Key National Honor Society, Inter-Residence Housing Council (IRHC), MUB Board, and Student Leadership and Involvement’s Late Night Program. Delta Phi Epsilon’s 36 Hour Teeter-Totter for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

Please help the sisters of Delta Phi Epsilon as we teeter-totter for 36 hours non-stop to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Cystic Fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic disease that damages the lungs and digestive system. More than 100,000 people worldwide are living with this disease, and the money raised will directly impact those affected with treatments and research for life-saving technology.

We have been hosting this event since 1994, with the goal of raising $2,000 to contribute to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation each year. Back then, this number represented the average lifespan of someone suffering from cystic fibrosis, but today this number represents how far research and medicine regarding CF has improved. As of 2021, the average life expectancy of an individual suffering from cystic fibrosis has increased to 58 years.

We will be outside of the Michigan Tech Library taking donations and teeter-tottering from 8:00am Wed. 2/5/2025 to 8:00pm Thurs. 2/6/2025, and we would love it if you stopped by!

MUB Board Presents:

MUB Board is looking to change Spring Fling this year! Spring Fling is a Tech Tradition that is meant to be a celebration of the semester and ending said semester on a high note. Over the years though, we feel that we have lost that original intent and have settled into a rhythm out of obligation, not in celebration. In efforts to correct this as well as improve our communication with participants, here are some of the current updates.

Spring Fling will no longer be a table-ing based event. Between K-Day and Spring Involvement Fair, a third recruitment/table-ing event has become redundant, especially at the end of the year when students are not trying to join new organizations.

Spring Fling will be activity based: The goal is to have little events happening around campus; these activities will follow the theme for this year (wild west) and provide students with things to do on campus that are fun, engaging, and can be done between classes. We as MUB board have already started brainstorming activities that will be listed in the form but you are more than welcome to come up with your own. Additionally, all the options that will be listed may not all happen, it really depends on what participating orgs want, how many want to participate, and what Michigan Tech will allow.

If your org wants to participate: Please fill out this general interest form. You don’t have to know what activity your org would like to host to fill it out. This is to gauge how many orgs are interested so that we can start planning early as well as confirm a main method of communication. We would like to have a headcount of participating orgs by February 2nd so start talking with your teams.

If you have questions, please feel free to reach out to mubboard@mtu.edu.

36th Annual MLK Day Celebration

CDI Announces 36th Annual MLK Day Events at Michigan Tech

HOUGHTON, MI — The Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) and the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Planning Committee is excited to announce the 36th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day (MLK Day) Celebration at Michigan Technological University on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025. This year’s theme, Beloved Community, draws from Dr. King’s vision of a world united in empathy, peace, and love. The day-long event will feature a variety of activities that celebrate Dr. King’s legacy and foster reflection, unity, and service in our community. Highlights include an MLK Brunch and keynote speaker, Interfaith Prayer Service, Peace March, and an MLK Reading Day with local elementary schools.

MLK Brunch

The celebration will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the MLK Brunch in the Ballroom of the Memorial Union Building. The event will feature Schwartzen Precil, a 2017 alumnus of Finlandia University, as the keynote speaker. Precil will share his personal reflections on Dr. King’s enduring influence and the ongoing pursuit of justice and equity. The brunch offers a unique opportunity for the community to come together in solidarity to honor Dr. King’s life and work. This program is partially sponsored by the Visiting Professor Program, funded through the State of Michigan’s King-Chavez-Parks Initiative.

MLK Interfaith Prayer Service and Reflection

At 12:00 p.m., the Interfaith Prayer Service and Reflection will take place in the East Reading Room of the Van Pelt and Opie Library. Led by Pastor Sarah Semmler Smith of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, this interfaith service will provide a space for reflection, prayer, and the sharing of excerpts from Dr. King’s sermons, prayers, and speeches. The event is open to all members of the campus community, regardless of faith, and aims to unite participants in a shared commitment to justice and peace.

MLK Peace March

Following the Prayer Service, the MLK Peace March will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Husky Statue. The march, led by Vice President for Student Affairs Kellie Raffaelli, will proceed across campus to reaffirm Michigan Tech’s dedication to Dr. King’s ideals of justice, equity, and peaceful protest. The Peace March will serve as a public demonstration of the campus community’s ongoing commitment to Dr. King’s vision for a more just society.

MLK Reading Day

As part of Michigan Tech’s MLK Day observance, MLK Reading Day will take place on Friday, Jan. 17, 2025. During this event, Michigan Tech students will visit local elementary schools to read children’s books that highlight the themes of social justice and Dr. King’s life and legacy. This annual event continues the tradition of sharing Dr. King’s message with young minds, fostering the values of equality, service, and community. Students interested in volunteering for MLK Reading Day can sign up online at: https://www.mtu.edu/diversity-center/get-involved/martin-luther-king/.

Do you want to travel abroad this spring with a group of your peers?

Limited space remains on the Student Leadership and Involvement sponsored trip to Ecuador as part of the Alternative Spring Breaks program. If you want to be part of this life-changing journey, apply by Friday, January 10th!

Alternative Spring Break trips are coordinated and led by a Michigan Tech staff member. During the trip, the group will participate in cultural immersion experiences, direct community service, reflection activities, and much more! The Ecuador trip is being planned in collaboration with Manna Project International, a non-profit organization that Michigan Tech also traveled with back in 2023. The majority of the trip will be spent in a small village known as Shandia where the organization has been working since May of 2023. Manna works in partnership with the local community to improve access to clean water, basic medical services, quality education, and economic opportunities. Potential service activities include building planter boxes or chicken coops, assisting in English and art classes with local children, and assisting with trail maintenance and reforestation projects.

When asked, “If someone were considering attending an Alternative Spring Break trip, what would you tell them?” one 2023 participant shared,

Do it. You will not only impact another community, but will reignite your passion for serving those within your own. Alternative Spring Break trips are the perfect way to step just outside of your comfort zone with fellow students and discover what drives you. You will get to meet not only incredible community leaders, but grow connections with peers that may be outside your normal circle. It’s a great opportunity to see what issues others are facing and recognize what you can do to really change the world while building community with your own university.

The total cost for the trip is $1,400 which includes transportation costs, lodging, partnership fees, and all meals while on-site in Ecuador.

Preparation and Beyond

Craft Day Workshop

The workshop will offer participants the chance to create both digital and physical artwork that will be displayed at the Van Pelt and Opie Library.

Student Art Exhibit

The MLK Art Exhibit will be featured along the curved wall of the Opie Reading Room at the Van Pelt and Opie Library from Jan. 13–24, 2025. This year, all students are invited to submit digital or physical art posters reflecting the theme of Beloved Community and honoring the legacy of Dr. King. The exhibit provides an opportunity for students to showcase their creative interpretations of Dr. King’s life, values, and impact on society.

Keweenaw Youth for Climate Action Divestment Petition

Michigan Technological University has millions of dollars invested in the fossil fuel industry, which is unethical and does not uphold Michigan Tech’s values. Michigan Tech has positioned itself as a leader in the innovations of the 21st century. One of the most important of these innovations will be the transition to a global zero-emission economy. This can be further achieved by divesting from the fossil fuel industry, as many other universities already have. With divestment, Tech would not be investing any more money into the fossil fuel industry. Therefore, we ask that Michigan Tech:

(1) Immediately disclose their investment portfolio,

(2) Halt new investments into the fossil fuel industry,

(3) Divest by an agreed-upon date from any current fossil fuel investments, and consider the reinvestment of these funds to be an opportunity to support environmental and social justice, and

(4) Make reinvestment choices in partnership with the student body, faculty, staff, and community members.

Student Scoop – November 13, 2024

LeaderShape Institute® Applications are Now Open!

The LeaderShape Institute® is a four-day leadership retreat that challenges participants to lead with integrity while working towards a vision grounded in their deepest values. Through the program students will:

  1. Develop a sense of community
  2. Make meaning of their personal values and connect their actions to them
  3. Strengthen their leadership style and understand how to work with other leadership styles

Each day of the program has a different theme that builds on the previous day as the session progresses:

Day One: Living and Leading with Integrity
Day Two: Challenging What Is, Looking to What Could Be
Day Three: The Value of One, The Power of All
Day Four: Living in Possibility

The Institute utilizes highly interactive program methods rather than classroom lectures. Not a typical leadership retreat, the Institute is grounded in helping individuals identify the values they hold that lead to making a difference in the communities around them. By leading with passion, integrity, and a healthy disregard for the impossible, participants explore who they are and the impact that they want to have on communities working towards a more caring, just, and equitable society.

The LeaderShape Institute® has hosted over 1,300 Huskies since 1996. This year, the program will run from Sunday, December 15th to Wednesday, December 18th at the Ford Center in Alberta, MI. Transportation to and from the Institute, meals, and lodging are provided. Participants must be available and are expected to stay for the entire length of the Institute. There is a minimal cost of $100 for participants to attend the Institute, however, that cost is often sponsored by campus departments and organizations.

Applications for the 2025 Institute are now open! We are seeking applicants who are curious, motivated, and ready to learn – whether you are an engaged student leader on campus already or looking to take your first step on your leadership journey. We intentionally seek students with a wide variety of interests and experiences. At the core of the LeaderShape experience is understanding the value of leading with integrity and the possibilities that come from a commitment to leading with purpose.

Learn more on our website or contact us at activities@mtu.edu. Ready to commit? Apply now!

The priority deadline for applications is November 10, 2024. However, applications will continue to be accepted on a rolling basis until all spots are filled or the final application deadline on December 2, 2024

The group will depart from Colorado on Saturday, March 1st and return to campus the following day.

This trip can accommodate up to nine students.

Shandia, Ecuador

In collaboration with the Manna Project International, this year’s international trip will travel to Shandia, Ecuador southeast of Quito to work with community organizers in a focus area selected by the group. All programs seek to “create communities of young leaders that help break the cycle of poverty in underserved communities around the world.” Focus area options include: education, health, sports and recreation, business, agriculture, and environment.

This trip will depart early on Saturday, February 22, 2025, and fly from Chicago to our destination. Lodging and food will be provided by our host organization. Cultural immersion experiences, educational opportunities, and group reflection will be incorporated throughout the week. The group will depart from Ecuador on Saturday, March 1st, and return to campus the following day.

This trip can accommodate up to ten students.

There is a nominal fee for participating in an Alternative Spring Break trip. The cost includes transportation throughout the trip, lodging on-site, meals on-site, and service project coordination. The costs per trip, which are subsidized by the Student Activity Fee, are:
