Four days of free films and music at the 41 North Film Festival

The 10th annual 41 North Film Festival will feature over 20 films in four days, all free and open to public, held November 7-10 in the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. The festival will be joined by filmmakers Katie Dellamaggiore and Gary Hustwit, as well as panelists from around campus and the community who will bring their perspectives to Q&As following several of the films. Topics including the project of measuring happiness, AI avatars for the deceased, the Bad River Band’s fight to control their land, and a hummingbird hospital.

The feature presentation this year is a documentary about legendary musician Brian Eno. The documentary is presented generatively—no two screenings are alike. The festival is also hosting the Michigan premiere of the new psychological thriller Somnium, and MTU Film Board will screen the award-winning films Whiplash and A Thousand and One in Fisher 135 in partnership with the festival. Descriptions and times for all films can be found on the festival website. If you are interested in volunteering, click the “Donate” link for information on how to sign up.

A few highlights during the four-day festival:

Agent of Happiness, Arun Bhattarai, Dorottya Zurbó, 2024. The film follows Amber, a happiness agent, who travels the Bhutanese Himalayas surveying people’s happiness. On his remote mountain journey, he searches for fulfillment. The film will be followed by a Q&A with Dr. Kayla Gabehart and Dr. Daniel Shtob.

There’s a Star, Julien Cadieux, 2023. Inspired by the music of Acadian musical icon Angèle Arsenault, a young transgender musician sets out to find community in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in this charming, hybrid musical-documentary.

ENO, Gary Hustwit, 2024.
