Do you want to go to New Orleans for Spring Break?

Limited space remains on the Alternative Spring Break New Orleans trip! If you want to be part of this life-changing journey, apply here.

Applications are due tomorrow, Thursday, January 15th at 8:00 AM.

In collaboration with NetWork Volunteers, this Alternative Spring Break trip will travel to New Orleans, Louisiana, to support projects focused on environmental sustainability.

This trip will depart early on Friday, February 27, in two Michigan Tech minivans. Participants will stay at a house near the volunteer site. Most meals will be prepared and provided by the group itself. Immersion experiences, educational opportunities, and group reflection will be incorporated throughout the week. The group will depart from New Orleans on Saturday, March 7th, and return to campus the following day.

When asked, “If someone were considering attending an Alternative Spring Break trip, what would you tell them?” one 2023 participant shared,

“Do it. You will not only impact another community, but will reignite your passion for serving those within your own. Alternative Spring Break trips are the perfect way to step just outside of your comfort zone with fellow students and discover what drives you. You will get to meet not only incredible community leaders, but grow connections with peers that may be outside your normal circle. It’s a great opportunity to see what issues others are facing and recognize what you can do to really change the world while building community with your own university.”

The total cost for the trip is $500 per student, which includes all food, travel, accommodations, and program materials.

Throughout the program, you’ll consider powerful questions that move you towards action:

Am I on the right path? Who do I want to be? How can I connect with other like-minded individuals? In small-group dialogue, large group interaction, and personal reflection, you’ll learn alongside others who also want to start something extraordinary.

January is National Stalking Awareness Month

January is National Stalking Awareness Month and an excellent opportunity to ensure our community understands what constitutes stalking per university policy.  Some examples include:

  • unwanted communication (phone, messages, emails)
  • following or waiting for a person to show up at work, school, or home
  • cyber stalking (GPS-enabled apps and keeping tabs on social media)

Most importantly, what to do if it happens to you, including campus and community resources. Stalking affects roughly 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men in their lifetime, according to the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS) (2022).

Stalking falls under prohibited conduct, as defined by Michigan Tech’s Title IX Policy and Code of Community Conduct. Statistically, stalking is most prevalent among adults ages 18-24.  Nearly 58% of female victims and 49% of male victims experienced stalking before the age of 25 (Smith SG, Basile KC, & Kresnow M., 2022). It is important to recognize the signs of stalking, know where to report, and the resources available.

January’s film ‘Jane’ uses a trove of never-before-seen footage to tell the story of Jane Goodall’s early explorations and research in Tanzania, focusing on her groundbreaking field work, her relationship with her cameraman and husband Hugo van Lawick, and the chimpanzees that were the subject of her study.

‘Jane’ will be shown at 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 15 in Fisher Hall 138. Refreshments will be provided, and each film will be followed by a facilitated discussion. The Sustainability Film Series is free and everyone is welcome to attend. A suggested $5 donation is appreciated and helps to support the continued offering of this film series.
