Student Scoop – January 28, 2026

Do you want to go to Maryland for Spring Break?

Limited space remains on the Alternative Spring Break Maryland trip! If you want to be part of this life-changing journey, apply here.

Applications are due Friday, January 30th at 8:00 AM.

In collaboration with Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna, this Alternative Spring Break trip will travel to Bel Air, Maryland, to help provide affordable housing opportunities. As part of the Collegiate Challenge program, participants will contribute by assisting in home construction projects and volunteering at a Habitat for Humanity ReStore, directly supporting families in need of safe and stable housing.

This trip will depart early on Friday, February 27, in two Michigan Tech minivans. Participants will stay in an Airbnb near the volunteer site. Most meals will be prepared and provided by the group itself. Immersion experiences, educational opportunities, and group reflection will be incorporated throughout the week. The group will depart from Maryland on Saturday, March 7th, and return to campus the following day.

When asked, “If someone were considering attending an Alternative Spring Break trip, what would you tell them?” one 2023 participant shared,

“Do it. You will not only impact another community, but will reignite your passion for serving those within your own. Alternative Spring Break trips are the perfect way to step just outside of your comfort zone with fellow students and discover what drives you. You will get to meet not only incredible community leaders, but grow connections with peers that may be outside your normal circle. It’s a great opportunity to see what issues others are facing and recognize what you can do to really change the world while building community with your own university.”

The total cost for the trip is $500 per student, which includes all food, travel, accommodations, and program materials.

Kenny Bragg Memorial Scholarship Announcement

This scholarship honors Michigan Tech student Kenneth (Kenny) Bragg ‘24. Kenny, his parents (Hope ’95 and Don ’92, both Tech forestry alumni), and his younger sister Elizabeth died together in a tragic house explosion in the suburbs of Detroit in 2023.

Kenny was a senior anthropology major in the Department of Social Sciences, had completed three summer archaeological field seasons, including one at Michigan Tech, and did significant volunteer work with the Arkansas Archaeological Survey. His research – Multiphase Salt Making at Nakuukuwidish/Holman Springs, a Caddo and Settler Salt-making Site in Sevier County, Arkansas – has been published posthumously with co-author Dr. Carl Drexler in the journal Southeastern Archaeology

Because of Kenny’s deep love of archaeology, this scholarship in his honor will provide $2,000 to help cover the cost for an MTU student to attend the Michigan Tech summer archaeological field school. Preference will be given to Anthropology, Social Science, Sustainability Science and Society, or Policy and Community Development majors.

Applications will be reviewed by the Industrial Heritage and Archaeology Program committee, and awards will be announced at the Department of Social Sciences end of year awards ceremony. For priority consideration, please submit your application by March 15.

CRU at MTU

Looking for a community on campus?
We are a caring community, passionate about connecting students to Jesus Christ! Throughout the semester, we have so many fun events going on every week that we want YOU to be a part of! Come join any of these events we hold every week! Some of the events that are going on are: weekly bible studies and shenanigans after Thursday Night Thing (TNT). These events are a great way to meet new people, build genuine friendships, and explore faith in a relaxed, supportive environment. Whether you’re strong in your faith or just curious, we hope to see you at any of these events!

Support the Center for Student Mental Health and Well-being!

Join us for an unforgettable evening of glow-snowshoeing under the stars! Participants will enjoy two illuminated trails of varying lengths, with snowshoes provided as part of the registration fee. To make this event a success, we’re seeking additional volunteers to assist in a variety of roles. FREE PIZZA AND SWAG TO ALL VOLUNTEERS!

Support the Rozsa Center for Performing Arts!

As a Volunteer Usher, you play a critical role in creating a joyful experience at arts events. Led by Rozsa staff, you and other Ushers work together to greet guests, admit folks into the theater, assist with seating and wayfinding, connect guests to venue accommodations, and support effective crowdflow and emergency procedures. Usher roles will be decided as a team at the beginning of the volunteer shift.
