Research Study Invitation

You are invited to take part in a research study examining the link between food access and behaviors. This survey is administered by Dr. Kelly Kamm and undergraduate research assistant Lauren Ossenheimer in collaboration with Copper Shores.

The goal of this research study is to examine food access and behaviors within the Michigan Technological University’s student population. By participating in this study, you will contribute valuable insights into student food access, helping shape future resources and programs on campus.

To be eligible to participate in this study, you must be 18 years of age or older, be a current student at Michigan Technological University, and live off campus (not in any of the following: McNair Hall, Wadsworth Hall, Douglas Houghton Hall, or East Hall).

The survey takes about 20–30 minutes to complete. As a thank-you, the first 400 students who complete the survey will receive $10, though all students are encouraged to participate. Your name and email will be stored separately from your survey responses. By completing this survey, you are voluntarily agreeing to participate. If you choose to participate in this survey, your responses will be anonymous and compiled with others to assess and inform food access programs and projects on our campus.

A list of compensation recipients will be provided to MTU Financial Services for tax reporting purposes in accordance with MTU’s human research compensation policy. Recipients will be mailed a check to the given mailing address.

Your participation in this survey is not necessary to use campus food access resources now or in the future. There is no cost to participate in this survey. There is no direct personal benefit to participating in this study. The MTU Institutional Review Board has reviewed our request to conduct this research project. If you have any concerns or questions about your rights in this study, please contact the Michigan Tech IRB at 906-487-2902 or email irb@mtu.edu. Please contact Dr. Kelly Kamm at kbkamm@mtu.edu if you have general survey questions.

You can learn more about MTU’s available food access resources through the Husky Food Access Network.

If you have understood this information and agree to take part in this survey, please scan the QR code or visit the link.

NEW Summer 2026 Track B Course: UN3013 – Summer in Detroit: Community-Engaged Environmental Science

Are you looking for a summer course that goes beyond lectures and exams—one that lets you apply what you’re learning in real communities, with real impact? If you’re interested in environmental science, sustainability, cities, or working with people, we invite you to consider a new Summer 2026 course: UN3013 – Summer in Detroit: Community-Engaged Environmental Science.

This course offers a unique opportunity to step outside the traditional classroom and learn environmental science through direct, hands-on engagement in the Detroit Metro and Highland Park communities. Rather than only exploring environmental challenges, you will work alongside community partners and middle and high school students to explore how urban environments function and how science can support healthier, more just communities.

Throughout the course, you will co-design and co-teach experiential STEM activities with 7th–11th grade students, serving as both a learner and a mentor. You’ll gain practical experience using tools such as GIS and drone-based data collection, while also participating in activities like tree planting, soil and water testing, biodiversity mapping, and environmental storytelling. More than half of the course is dedicated to experiential, community-based learning, allowing you to build skills through action, reflection, and collaboration.

In addition to developing technical and field skills, this course emphasizes ethical community engagement, environmental justice, and the social and historical context of urban environments. You’ll reflect on your experiences and learning throughout the summer and ultimately create an Essential Education E-Portfolio that showcases your civic engagement, applied knowledge, and professional growth. This portfolio can be a valuable asset for internships, graduate school applications, fellowships, and future careers in environmental science, policy, education, outreach, or related fields.

UN3013 is especially well-suited for students who enjoy hands-on, people-centered learning and are curious about the connections between the environment, equity, and community well-being. No prior experience with GIS, drones, or outreach is required. Just a willingness to learn, engage respectfully with communities, and apply your education in meaningful ways.

More information about the course and registration can be found here: or by scanning the QR code on the attached flyer
