Summer Service Opportunity

Are you in the Houghton Area over the summer? Do you like volunteering? Join Student Leadership & Involvement for an afternoon of hands-on service work with Copper Country Habitat for Humanity on their newest build site on Green Acres Rd in Houghton.

Quincy Mine Summer Employment

Position Summary: 

The Quincy Mine Hoist Association (QHMA) is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the rich industrial and cultural history of the Quincy Mine. At the core of our mission is public education, and our Interpretive Mine Guides serve as the frontline ambassadors in achieving this goal. 

Guides lead visitors through engaging and informative tours of the mine’s surface and underground features. This role requires not only a passion for storytelling and history but also strong public speaking skills, a high level of professionalism, and the ability to adapt to varying audience needs. Guides must demonstrate both enthusiasm and respect while interacting with the public and possess the leadership capabilities necessary to manage group dynamics and respond calmly in emergency situations. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct engaging, historically accurate guided tours through both surface and underground portions of the Quincy Mine. 
  • Safely operate the mine’s cogwheel and electric tram systems, and perform routine safety and operational checks. 
  • Open and close visitor areas in accordance with established procedures.
  • Perform basic cleaning and upkeep of tour areas and public restrooms, as scheduled or assigned. 
  • Provide exceptional visitor service by offering information, assistance, and directions in a courteous and professional manner. 
  • Assist with special events, group tours, and maintenance projects as needed.
  • Demonstrate situational awareness and maintain visitor safety at all times, especially in potentially hazardous environments.

Qualifications: 

Education: 

  • High School Diploma required 
  • Preferred: College degree or coursework in History, Education, Museum Studies,  Geology, or related field. 

Skills and Experience:  

  • Strong public speaking and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Preferred: Customer service experience, particularly in a tourism, hospitality, or interpretive setting. 
  • Ability to manage dynamic schedules and adjust to fluctuating visitor attendance.
  • Physical stamina to lead tours lasting over two hours, often on uneven terrain and in varying weather conditions. 
  • Demonstrated interest in history, industrial heritage, or mining-related topics.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills, particularly in interpreting historical themes and addressing visitor questions. 

Physical: 

  • Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments, including underground tunnels with limited lighting, varying temperatures, and damp conditions.
  • Comfortable with heights, confined spaces, and loud machinery. 
  • Ability to stand, walk, and speak for extended periods and lift up to 25 pounds. 

Additional Requirements: 

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle. 
  • Willingness to wear a branded uniform as assigned. 
  • Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings.
