An Afternoon on the Town
Looking for the perfect way to start the new school year? Grab your friends and join us for An Afternoon on the Town, a Michigan Tech tradition where campus meets community.
From 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Saturday, August 29th, local businesses/services will be tabling on campus, throughout the downtown Houghton area on Shelden Avenue, and into downtown Hancock on Quincy Street. There will be music, refreshments, and giveaways for students! The route starts outside the Van Pelt and Opie Library, where each student will receive a Campus Bookstore bag to collect giveaways along the route.
Students are welcome to walk the route or utilize the free shuttles that will be available throughout the entire event. The shuttles can be tracked through TripShot, which has a mobile app. The shuttles have three stops:
- The Memorial Union Building (MUB)
- The Houghton City Center
- A lot across Quincy St. from the Keweenaw Co+op in Hancock
Check out the 2026 participating groups on the event maps. Use the Walking Map to see where businesses will be located during An Afternoon on the Town, and the Business Map to find their permanent spots in Houghton.
Come curious and get ready to experience Houghton and Hancock like never before. You do not want to miss this event!
Get Involved: 30 Ways in the First 66 Days Challenge
The 30 Ways in the First 66 Days Challenge has officially begun! Whether you’re new to campus or just looking to get more involved, this challenge is you invitation to dive into the Michigan Tech experience and make the most of the start of the semester!
The objective is simple – complete all 30 activities to help you connect, explore, and grow: from cheering alongside the Pep Band (did you attend University Welcome?) to connecting with your academic advisor, attending a HuskyLead, or trying a pasty.
Here’s how to participate:
- Complete all 30 activities by October 31st
- Once you’ve completed all 30, stop by MUB 112 to claim your prize.
If it’s helpful, you can track your completion using our printable checklist.
For completing the challenge, you’ll receive:
- A Michigan Tech Bucket Hat
- An exclusive 30 Ways in 66 Days sticker!

Keweenaw Experience Sunset Cruise
Ready to get out on the water and take in a Keweenaw sunset? Join us for the Keweenaw Experience Sunset Cruise and spend the evening cruising Lake Superior with fellow Huskies.
This is your chance to take a break from the start-of-semester hustle, enjoy the views, and experience the Keweenaw from a whole new perspective. Whether you come with friends or are looking to meet some new people, it’s an easy way to spend an evening outside of the usual campus routine.
Thursday, September 3
- Leave campus: 5:30 p.m.
- Cruise departs the dock: 7:30 p.m.
- Approximate return to campus: 10:30 p.m.
Tickets go on sale today at 6 p.m.!
- Cruise ticket: $10
- Transportation to Copper Harbor: $5
- Need a ride to Copper Harbor? You must purchase a transportation ticket along with your cruise ticket.
- You can purchase up to 3 tickets per person. If you’re bringing a group larger than three, another person will need to purchase the additional tickets.
There are a limited number of seats, so don’t wait! Get your tickets when they go on sale and bring your friends for an evening on the water.
Seeing a sunset is not guaranteed…we live in Michigan. This trip will only be rescheduled in cases of heavy rain, thunderstorms, or other severe weather.
This is a student experience. Tickets are intended for current Michigan Tech students.

Homecoming Team and Court Registration Open Now!
It’s that amazing time of the fall semester—Homecoming! This year’s theme, Mission Impossible, is all about Husky spirit, friends, and a mission you won’t want to miss. Homecoming runs Sunday, September 13 through Saturday, September 19, but the real heart of the celebration is you—your team and your court.
Whether you join with your student organization, your residence hall, or just a group of friends, forming a Homecoming team is the best way to experience the week. Teams can compete or simply participate for fun, but either way, you’ll get to show off your Husky pride while making unforgettable memories.
And don’t forget about Homecoming Court! Court is a tradition that recognizes leaders, doers, and spirited Huskies who bring energy to campus. Think you have what it takes to accept the mission? If you want to represent your fellow students and help lead the celebration, make sure to register.

HuskyLEAD: Exploring Emotional Intelligence
Leading others starts with understanding yourself. In this interactive session, you will explore the four components of emotional intelligence and discover how they impact communication, relationships, and leadership. You will leave with practical strategies for developing self-awareness, regulating emotions, and demonstrating empathy in both your organizations and everyday life.

Ever wanted to be a Park Ranger or work for the National Park Service? Have you been curious to learn about how to apply for federal jobs and how the hiring process works? If so, this post is for you!
Come on by Wednesday, August 26th from 4 PM – 5 PM to the Calumet Visitor Center 3rd floor Ballroom at 98 5th Street, Calumet, MI 49913, for a presentation focused on how to search for jobs, the hiring process, how to build a resume, how to apply, and what it looks like after you apply.
This presentation is designed to help give you a better understanding of the process. There are no positions being filled or applications accepted during this presentation.
Nature Hike
Join Keweenaw Youth for Climate Action and the Wildlife Society on a nature hike at the Tech Trails.
When: August 27th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

We have meeting points at both the Tech Trails entrance and the front entrance of the SDC. If you meet at the SDC, come at least 5 minutes early to walk up to the Tech Trails and meet the rest of the group.

Volunteer at the 2026 Festival of Nations!
Celebrate cultures from around the world while giving back to the Michigan Tech and Keweenaw communities! Volunteers are needed for the 2026 Festival of Nations on Saturday, September 19, at the Dee Stadium and Houghton Waterfront.
Since 1989, the Festival of Nations has celebrated the cultural diversity of the Houghton and Hancock communities. This year’s theme is “The 7 Wonders of the World,” and volunteers will play an important role in making the event welcoming, safe, and fun for everyone.
Several volunteer opportunities are available throughout the day, including:
- Supervising inflatables and helping families participate safely
- Welcoming and checking in fellow volunteers
- Assisting attendees and keeping festival spaces clean
- Monitoring the waterfront and reporting safety concerns
- Supporting access control during event setup
Most shifts are only two hours long, making volunteering an easy way to get involved while still having time to enjoy the food, performances, activities, and cultural celebrations offered throughout the festival.
Whether you are looking to complete service hours, meet new people, support the community, or experience one of the Keweenaw’s most celebrated traditions, we would love to have you join us.
The Festival of Nations will take place on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Volunteer registration will remain open through Friday, September 18, at 11:55 p.m.

Mexico Spring Break – A Study Away Experience
Spend spring break in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula while earning up to 3 credits toward your essential education experience!
This immersive study abroad course will take us to five different types of communities in the Yucatán, from rural villages to over-touristed resort towns, to see how tourism-led development is impacting people, places, and environments. We’ll jump into local contexts with hands-on activities to experience the joy and challenge of living in this part of the world today.
The course fee is $3,100, which includes everything except 1 meal a day. Check out our website for more information and to apply!

Hancock is having their End of Summer Celebration on Sept. 5th from 2-10 PM. The community is invited to celebrate the end of summer with a full day of family-friendly activities, tournaments, live music, food, vendors, and entertainment for all ages. PlayWell in the Keweenaw Husky Hour!
Excited to be back in the area and do some exploring? Join us for our “PlayWell in the Keweenaw – Learning to Pack a Bag and Where to Explore” Husky Hour to learn about local trails/attractions in the area from Visit Keweenaw, how to pack a hiking bag from the Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP), and how to connect the two to our PlayWell faction of the BeWell Initiative. Feel free to bring your own bag if you want to ask the OAP any questions. Husky Eats will also be providing trial mix samples to munch on! The Husky Hour will be held on September 8th, in The Alley Makerspace, from 4-5 PM.
