Can The Citation is Back!
Do you have an unpaid parking citation? Looking for an easy way to clear it while supporting the campus community?
Student Affairs, the Husky Food Access Network (HuskyFAN), and Transportation Services have teamed up for Can The Citation, a food drive that allows you to pay off your tickets with nonperishable donations to the HuskyFAN food pantry!
How to ‘Can’ The Citation
Donate non-expired, nonperishable food or personal care items between Monday, Nov. 2, and Nov. 20 at the Dean of Students Office on the first floor of the Administration Building. Due to already having a surplus of corn and green beans, we ask that you avoid these items if at all possible.
Your donation will remove a citation from your account based on the following tiers:
- One full brown grocery bag = $25 citation removed from your account
- Eight 12-oz. cans = $25 citation removed from your account
- Six 12-oz. cans = $15 citation removed from your account
Please note: A maximum of three citations are eligible for removal from your account during this donation period.
Bonus Raffle Entry!
Every person who donates will be entered into a raffle to win a free parking pass!
Don’t have a citation but still want to donate and be entered into the raffle? We welcome and appreciate all donations to help stock the HuskyFAN food pantry for our students.
Questions about the program can be directed to the Dean of Students Office at deanofstudents@mtu.edu.
Thank you for supporting the HuskyFAN and our campus community!

Five Reasons to Check Out the 41 North Film Festival
The 41 North Film Festival returns to Michigan Tech November 5–8, bringing four days of extraordinary films to the Rozsa Center. Whether you’re a film buff or just looking for something fun and interesting to do, here are five reasons to check it out.
1. A Michigan Tech success story. Breaking the Code tells the remarkable story of Michigan Tech alumnus Kanwal Rekhi, whose journey from India to Silicon Valley helped shape the technology industry. It’s a story of innovation, entrepreneurship, and making your own way.
2. Movies that are weird, wild, and wildly entertaining. Catch Bugonia and The Peril at Pincer Point for some offbeat narrative filmmaking. Fans of HBO’s How To with John Wilson should check out his new feature, The History of Concrete, told in Wilson’s wry, absurdist style, while Joybubbles tells the fascinating story of a blind man whose extraordinary ability to whistle telephone tones helped pioneer phone hacking.
3. New takes on cult classics, cookies, and Disney. In Time Warp, a queer theater company in small-town Wyoming stages a shadow production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in a spirited documentary about identity and community. Cookie Queens brings competition and ambition to the world of Girl Scout cookies, while Runa Simi follows an effort to bring Disney’s The Lion King to Quechua-speaking audiences.
4. A tasting menu. The festival’s short-film programs offer a chance to sample an eclectic mix of stories, including award-winning films that have been making waves on the festival circuit: Terms and Conditions, The Kids Are Alright, and Winter Is Coming. Or explore local food systems with the new documentary Fork in the Road, and stop by the mini-farmers market in the Rozsa Lobby from 5:30–7:15 p.m.
5. It’s FREE! Every screening is free and open to students and the community. No tickets, no subscriptions, no excuses. Just show up, bring a friend, and enjoy some great movies.
November 5–8 | Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts
Full schedule and film descriptions: 41northfilmfest.org.
Farmers Market at the Rozsa, Friday, 11/6
Fresh apples, homemade baked goods, seasonal veggies, and plenty of local flavor are waiting for you at the Farmers Market on Friday in the Rozsa Lobby from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. as part of the 41 North Film Festival.
Local farmers, food producers, and artisans will share what’s growing, cooking, and being created right here in our community. Listen to some music, meet the people behind the products, discover something new, and pick up a tasty treat along the way.
Combine your market exploration with a free film before and/or after. At 5:00 p.m. John Wilson’s The History of Concrete offers his wry, funny take on a ubiquitous material. At 7:30, Fork in the Road explores sustainable food systems across the country. Co-director Vivian Sorenson will be in attendance. All films are free and open to the public.

ASA Student Chapter: HEAR US OUT!
The Acoustical Society of America Student Chapter is hosting its second technical talk of the semester!
Join us Thursday, November 5th at 5:00 PM in MEEM 302 to hear virtual talks from two acoustics professionals:
Martha Brown, an Aerospace Technologist at NASA Langley Research Center.
- Title: “Navigating Your Career in Uncertain Times: Lessons From My Journey in Engineering, Research, and Leadership”
- Abstract: Drawing on my career as a research engineer, I will share personal experiences, lessons learned, and insights gained through scientific research, technical leadership, and mentoring the next generation of engineers. I will reflect on my professional journey in aeroacoustics, highlight research projects that have been particularly meaningful to me, and discuss how the culture of engineering and scientific research has evolved over the years.
Steven Senczyszyn, a Research Engineer at Michigan Tech’s Great Lakes Research Center.
- Title: “From Nanotubes to Vessel Noise: Acoustics Across Scales”
- Abstract: Acoustics research can take us in some unexpected directions, from thermoacoustics to underwater acoustics. I’ve used carbon nanotubes to generate sound and have characterized fisheries vessels on the Great Lakes through their acoustic signatures. In this talk, I’ll cover two areas of my research: the development of carbon nanotube-based thermoacoustic speakers and the application of underwater acoustics to vessel profiling. Along the way, we’ll explore how sound can be generated without conventional moving diaphragms, what underwater acoustic signatures can reveal about vessel interactions with fish populations, and the unique engineering challenges associated with each. Through these two examples, I’ll share some of the interesting problems, lessons learned, and what makes acoustics such a diverse and exciting field of research.
We’ll be serving pizza and pop for everyone who shows up, so feel free to bring a friend who’s interested in acoustics, or just pizza!
