Juneteenth Celebration

Join Residence Education and Housing Services for a Juneteenth Celebration on Friday, June 17th from 1-3pm on the Douglass Houghton Hall Yard!

There will be a trivia contest with prizes, as well as snacks and yard games available to play! This event will also have educational materials to learn more about the history of the holiday. 

The origins of Juneteenth are directly related to the arrival of Union soldiers in Galveston, TX on June 19, 1865, who were ordered to inform the enslaved people and the state’s residents that slavery had been abolished. This news was delivered more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared freedom for more than three million enslaved people living in the Confederate states. This holiday celebrates freedom for all Americans and serves as the longest-running African-American holiday.

Logo Contest for the Sustainability Demonstration House

The MTU Sustainability Demonstration House (SDH) is in search of an official project logo!  We would like to invite students across campus to submit logo designs for the SDH project.  We have over $60 in prizes available, including gift cards to two local businesses: Refill U.P. and the Keweenaw Co-op.  The official contest guidelines are attached to this email.  Logos are due on August 14th and can be submitted via this Google form. 

Bridgefest Engineering Camp needs your help!

Bridgefest Engineering Camp will take place this Friday, June 17th at Porvoo Park in Hancock, and is expecting a few hundred children throughout the day.

They are looking for graduate students, professional engineers, and undergrads to volunteer to support the days programming between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Each volunteer will get a t-shirt with the Bridgefest logo on it for volunteering their time. They have projects set up for children under 16 to complete and learn about the science behind the construction of bridges.

Hancock Rotary will be selling hot dogs, chips, and drinks at Porvoo Park at the same time as a fundraiser for the Hancock Dog Park amenities.

Upcoming Primary Elections

The Michigan (Aug. 2nd), Wisconsin (Aug. 9), and Minnesota (Aug. 9) summer primary elections are all two months away. Now is the time to start making your plan to vote!

Start by checking if you are registered. Michigan residents can check their voter information online with the Department of State. Residents of other states can find their state verification tools on Vote411.org.

Next, ask yourself where you will be on election day. Not going to be at your permanent address? Request an absentee ballot! Michigan residents can request their ballot online. Learn how to request an absentee ballot in your state with vote.org.

Plan to be in town and ready to vote in person? Locate your polling place and the hours they will be open. Consider your schedule for that day and add your commitment to vote to your calendar so you don’t forget!

Most ballots have not yet been finalized. Keep an eye on the Student Scoop for future updates on reviewing the primary ballot in advance and helpful resources for reviewing candidates and issues in your area.

Thatcher Markham Memorial Run and Bridgefest Need Volunteer

We are proud to honor the memory of Thatcher Markham with a 5K run/walk event from Hancock to Houghton on June 17th at 7:00pm that supports the Copper Country Junior Hockey Association and Pigs ‘N Heat (Copper Country Police and Fire Relief Fund) in their missions to promote youth sports and support local fire/crime victims in the Copper Country. Thatcher’s family and our community tragically lost Thatcher at 12 years old as a victim of the 2018 Father’s Day flood in northern Houghton County. His memory has lived on through many local events and remembrances and this race is another way to make sure he is never forgotten by everyone in the Copper Country. It is also fitting that remembering Thatcher will help us with assisting local youth sports – Thatcher himself was a longtime CCJHA player – and local first-responders in their charitable work.

It takes many great volunteers to have a great event. If you can’t run/walk or aren’t up to it, but still want to help out a great cause, please email thatchermarkhammemorialrun@gmail.com to express your interest in assisting with the race. We need volunteers to help with organization prior to race day, race day, day-before registration and check-in, organizing the start and finish areas, transporting racer’s gear, helping with timing (splits), helping at the aid station, leading and sweeping the race, controlling traffic, setting up the course, etc. Even if you’re participating in the event, we still need your help. And you can still catch the parade in Houghton with most volunteer positions. Let us know what position preference you may have when emailing if any. Volunteers will need to sign a release form prior to volunteering.

You’ll build critical leadership and interpersonal skills while spending the summer in Houghton! Meet students from across the country and around the world while you lead their discovery of the beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula. 

We’re looking for leaders like you to join our team this summer!

GSG Summer Softball League

Summer is on its way and so is GSG’s summer softball league! This no-holds-bar extreme slow-pitch Softball League will be held over the Summer Semester from June 9th to August 6th! Games will be held weekly on Thursday evenings from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, with Tuesday reserved for makeup games.

Don’t have any softball equipment you say? Well, no worries here! GSG will provide bats, balls, and gloves for every registered player. Of course, if you do have your own equipment, you are more than welcome to use them. Also, feel free to start recruiting for your team. Those who are not affiliated with a team but are interested in playing are welcome to register solo. We will find a team for you. If you don’t have enough players for a team, still register! We will help you to fill your team with available solo players.

Help the Angel Mission move to their new home!

After twenty years of serving the Keweenaw, the Angel Mission is moving to a new permanent location this Thursday, May 27th from 10 AM-3 PM. Volunteers will assist in loading store contents into a U-haul at their current location 119 5th St, Calumet, MI and unloading at their new address 433 5th St. Calumet. All community members are invited to assist!

The Angel Mission offers a variety of programs, including a free store that provides clothing and other household essentials, a food pantry, assistance with home heating and medical costs, a winter clothing giveaway, and the Angel Tree Christmas program. The organization is supported by the Portage Lake United Church in Houghton.

K-Day Registration is OPEN

Sunny days are heading your way! Grab your flip-flops and sunglasses because we are heading to the beach!! K-Day Registration is officially open, so reserve your spot now! Space and resources are limited, so do not delay!  This year’s theme will have you soaking up the fun at K-Day!  Organizations can get creative with this beach vibes-themed student organization fair!

K-Day, or Keweenaw Day, is an annual tradition that will be held on Friday, September 9 beginning at noon. Students head to Chassell Centennial Park for an afternoon of food, fun, and music – it’s like a day at the beach!  K-day typically sees 3000-4000 students so this is an important recruitment opportunity for your organization.  Please have your organization’s event finalized before registering HERE.  

Keep in mind, the person you list as the primary contact for your organization’s registration will be the one receiving all communications.  They will need to keep an eye out for emails during the summer in case of any changes that are made to K-Day due to any updates we may need to make in regards to our campus Healthy and Safety Levels.

Earth Day Dinner

Join us on April 22nd, 4-7 pm for the 2nd annual Earth Day Dinner! 90% of the food served in the McNair Dining Hall will be plant-based and 100% of the food and paper waste generated at the dinner will be diverted from the landfill. Some menu items include Buffalo Chickpea Quesadillas, Red Lentil Curry, and Portabella Mushroom Burgers. Wads will have more plant-based options and a waste diversion station. Students with a meal plan are encouraged to donate any remaining guest passes to be used by off-campus students, faculty, and staff.

Swing on By!

Need a break from studying? Come to the MUB Alumni Lounge from 6 pm – 9 pm on Sunday, April 24th to get your blood pumping while listening to jazzy tunes by the Backroom Boys. This free Swing sponsored event is open to the Michigan Tech community and general public. No dance experience necessary and $5 donations are greatly appreciated. Hope you’ll swing by!

It’s National Volunteer Appreciation Week!

Each year, Michigan Tech students give their time and talent to benefit our community through campus programs like Make a Difference Day and Alternative Spring Breaks, as well as independent community service. In the past calendar year, 772 volunteers tracked their service on our volunteer management software, GivePulse. Together they have given 10,948 hours of service to our community. Thank you to each of those volunteers and all of the volunteers here in the Keweenaw who make our community stronger together!

Shifts are available Monday through Friday from 9:00-10:30 a.m., 10 a.m.-1 p.m., 11:30-1:00p.m., and 2-4 p.m. These shifts include both our am and pm tours as well as front desk visitor check-in.

Thank you for your patience during this short interruption as we work through these much-needed projects. For current SDC members, please accept complimentary access to Gates Tennis Center and the Michigan Tech Trails from April 30 to May 15. In addition, select areas in the SDC have been made available on a reduced schedule, therefore requests for SDC membership extension will not be accepted. We view this temporary shutdown as a way to make a positive impact on multiple areas of the facility without causing the need for further/additional/unplanned closures and disruptions. We stand by our commitment to make improvements to our facility that will benefit our users today and into the future.

The SDC will reopen fully on Monday, May 16, with summer hours in place through Sunday, August 29. Please note that the SDC and the Gates Tennis Center will be closed on May 30 and July 4 for University recognized holidays.

Navigating Advisor/Advisee Relationships

Many advisor/advisee relationships are positive and productive; others can be challenging and difficult. Communication, power dynamics, different expectations, and more, can make these relationships difficult to navigate, and even negatively impact graduate students’ experiences at the professional and personal levels.

Please join us on April 14, 2022, from 9.00am to 10.00am for a webinar that addresses these difficulties. Dr. Debra Charlesworth and Anna McClatchy will discuss ways to navigate advisor/advisee relationships and resolve problems that may arise. There will be time for a Q&A session.

Become a Donor with Michigan Tech Football

The MTU Football Team is joining with the Andy Talley Bone Marrow Foundation and Be the Match, to help register people to go on the national registry as a blood stem or bone marrow donor.  All that is involved to be on the registry is providing some information, and swabbing the inside of your cheek.  Get In The Game and save a life!  (Chance of becoming a match and being selected during your lifetime on the registry is .006 percent).  They are looking for Donors between 18-40 years of age.
This event will be held Wednesday, April 20th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the Lobby of Fisher Hall.  If you are interested, you can join the national registry online or by stopping by our booth on Wednesday, April 20th in Fisher hall and registering.  

WANTED: CAMPUS LEADERS

MTU’s chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary is opening up applications for residence hall students who are interested in joining!

A good candidate for NRHH is a resident who is active in their community, has given recognition to others, and has performed acts of service on small or large scales. Being a housing organization, NRHH does focus on the demonstration of these qualities in the residence halls but also recognizes contributions to the greater campus and Houghton/Hancock community as a whole.
We have two forms to be used, the first one is the application form itself, and the second form is for individuals to nominate potential members to NRHH. Anybody is able to submit a nomination (including you!), however, the applicant must be an MTU student living on campus to be eligible to apply.

This week in Michigan Tech Recreation

Registration for the three Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL) Courses is now open! This is the course you must take to get your Michigan CPL. This is the premier course in the state of Michigan. The Michigan Coalition of Responsible Gun Owners (MCRGO) course covers what you need to carry a loaded weapon safely in open spaces. Rental equipment is available for an additional fee. Students will receive a copy of the course material on the day of class. No experience is necessary.

The HuskiesFit Group Exercise Class highlighted this week is HIGH Fitness! HIGH Fitness is a hardcore, fun fitness class set to pop music participants can sing along to. It incorporates high-intensity plyometrics and toning with easy-to-follow choreography. It’s like Jane Fonda meets HIIT Training. Come join the fun!

Howl With the Huskies

Come join the Center for Student Mental Health and Well-Being to Howl With The Huskies on Saturday, April 23rd! We will meet at the Husky Statue at 11:50pm and scream at 11:59pm!

Earth Day Dinner

Join us on April 22nd, 4-7 pm for the 2nd annual Earth Day Dinner! 90% of the food served in the McNair Dining Hall will be plant-based and 100% of the food and paper waste generated at the dinner will be diverted from the landfill. Some menu items include Buffalo Chickpea Quesadillas, Red Lentil Curry, and Portabella Mushroom Burgers. Wads will have more plant-based options and a waste diversion station. Students with a meal plan are encouraged to donate any remaining guest passes to be used by off-campus students, faculty, and staff.

Line 5 Presentation and Forum

Did you know that Enbridge Energy is operating the Line 5 Pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac illegally? Did you know that Line 5 only provides propane to roughly 12,000 homes and businesses in the UP and that other propane sources and providers already exist? Join us for a public forum with Line 5 activists Art Hirsch & Susan Holcombe (members of the Lansing Climate Reality Chapter) and Gary Street (an MTU alum) who will dive into the history of Line 5, the current status of Line 5, and how Line 5 affects the Upper Peninsula. Presenters will be tuning in virtually, patrons can attend in person (Fisher 138) or on Zoom (81094555102).

SHPE Presents: Gala Latina

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers is presenting Gala Latina. Gala Latina is open to everyone in the Michigan Tech Community and will be held on April 16th from 6-9 PM in the MUB Ballroom. Our event will include food, music, and a free raffle.

LGBTQIA+ Equity Forum

Keweenaw Pride is hosting two forums for students to share their experiences at Michigan Tech as members of or allies to the LGBTQIA+ community. We encourage students to share both positive and negative experiences and there will be a designated time for students to offer suggestions on what could be done to improve the LGBTQIA+ experience on campus. The forums will be held on Thursday, April 7, and Friday, April 8, both starting at 7pm. Students are welcome to attend one or both events. If you plan to attend, please fill out the RSVP form so we know how many people to expect. Any students who would prefer to submit written responses or are unable to attend the forums are invited to share their experiences via a survey. The Thanksgiving Play

How hard can it be to celebrate Thanksgiving and Native American Heritage Month at the same time? Good intentions collide with absurd assumptions in FastHorse’s wickedly funny satire, as a troupe of teaching artists scrambles to create a show that somehow manages to celebrate both while avoiding any cultural missteps.

Each evening, dinner is served at 6:45 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Following the show, there will be a brief panel discussion. 
Shows will be performed over two weekends from Thursday, March 31 to Saturday, April 9.

Fraternity & Sorority Life Presents… Seize the Awkward

The words “I’m fine” are used in many contexts, but when it comes to our mental health, are we truly “fine” all the time? Talking to others about how you are really doing should not be awkward and together as a community, we can help make that happen. The national campaign “Seize the Awkward” is coming back to campus for the second year in a row huskies! This campaign focuses on how mental health can be extremely hard to speak about candidly: so let’s change that together.

On Wednesday, March 23th, our Awkward Art Night will be held from 7:00- 9:00 PM in MUB Ballroom A. Join us as we get creative and bring awareness to mental health and help to destigmatize those conversations surrounding it. All art supplies will be provided, please feel free to also bring your own. 

Thursday, March 24th, the Walk Out of Darkness will be held at the John Macinnes Student Ice Arena from 7:00- 9:00 PM. This walk is meant to help to make those conversations about mental health a little less awkward, and support those who may be struggling by giving them a safe space. Whether you’re walking for yourself, a loved one, or a friend; you’re not alone in your journey. Campus and community resources will also be available at this walk for students to engage with.

Talking about our mental health should not be awkward. Let’s come together and show our faculty, peers, friends, and family who may be struggling that we are in their corner and support them every step of their journey. For resources and to learn more about this campaign, please check out seizetheawkward.org!

The 2022 FIRST Robotics Competition, Kingsford District event is looking for volunteers! This event will be held at Kingsford High School on April 7-9.

For the event as a whole, there are many volunteer opportunities that are geared to a wide variety of experiences, interests, and availability for those looking to get involved in the FIRST community. In addition, below is the Recruitment Flyer. Judging will take place on the Friday and Saturday of the event (April 8-9; 7:30 am- 6pm). No previous experience or knowledge of robots is necessary as there are both technical and non-machine (e.g. Entrepreneurship, Team Spirit, etc.) awards.

The Professional Development Committee at the Graduate Student Government and MTU’s Career Services are collaborating to bring you a three-part seminar dedicated to navigating careers for scientists. The Video Game Jazz Ensemble will kick off the festival on Friday with jazz covers of excellent video game music. Then the R&D Big Band will take the stage with a mix of music by Dizzy Gillespie, Fred Sturm, Horace Silver, Thad Jones and Herbie Hancock. The Workshop Brass Band will close the concert with energetic New Orleans-style jams.

Saturday’s show opens with the DK Jazz Fest 2022 Alumni Jazz Band, conducted by Adam Meckler and Mike Irish (director of jazz studies 1991-2018) and featuring Jazz Band alumni. Then, headliner Caroline Davis, saxophonist, takes the stage with the Jazz Lab Band. “We are incredibly lucky to have Caroline Davis in from New York City to be featured as our guest artist,” says Meckler. “Caroline is one of my favorite musicians today.” Together with the Jazz Lab Band, Davis — whose work has garnered praise from NPR, The New York Times, The Wire, DownBeat, and JazzTimes — will perform her original work and pieces by Thad Jones and Carla Bley. 

The festival will wrap with a post-show reception in the Rozsa Lobby.

Michigan Tech students can attend and bring a friend for free with the Experience Tech Fee. Tickets for each evening are $15 for adults and $5 for youth. Get your tickets online or by phone at 906-487-1906. The Rozsa Box Office will also be open for ticket purchases an hour before the performance.

Greek Life Presents… Seize the Awkward

The words “I’m fine” are used in many contexts, but when it comes to our mental health, are we truly “fine” all the time? Talking to others about how you are really doing should not be awkward and together as a community, we can help make that happen. The national campaign “Seize the Awkward” is coming back to campus for the second year in a row huskies! This campaign focuses on how mental health can be extremely hard to speak about candidly: so let’s change that together.

On Friday March 18th is National Awkward Moments Day and the kickoff of the Seize the Awkward campaign here at MTU! Join the Green Bandana Project in the library from 11:00 AM- 3:00 PM for resources about mental health. Help us to start a dialogue that is open and accepting of those awkward moments or conversations in life. 

On Wednesday March 23th, our Awkward Art Night will be held from 7:00- 9:00 PM in MUB Ballroom A. Join us as we get creative and bring awareness to mental health and help to destigmatize those conversations surrounding it. All art supplies will be provided, please feel free to also bring your own. 

Thursday March 24th, the Walk Out of Darkness will be held at the John Macinnes Student Ice Arena from 7:00- 9:00 PM. This walk is meant to help to make those conversations about mental health a little less awkward, and support those who may be struggling by giving them a safe space. Whether you’re walking for yourself, a loved one, or a friend; you’re not alone in your journey. Campus and community resources will also be available at this walk for students to engage with.

Talking about our mental health should not be awkward. Let’s come together and show our faculty, peers, friends, and family who may be struggling that we are in their corner and support them every step of their journey. For resources and to learn more about this campaign, please check out seizetheawkward.org!

Meet with Jade for a Wednesday Book Club! This week students will meet in room 243 in the library to discuss Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson! This week’s book club will be an introduction to the book and will include free book handouts, scheduling discussions, and more! This book club is about encouraging students to understand the difference between surviving life and living life, so come out and enjoy some reading with us!

Student Leadership Awards Nominations Due this Friday!

There is still time to submit your nominations for the Student Leadership Awards! Nominations for the President’s Award for Leadership, Dean of Students Award for Possibilities, the new William and Josephine Balconi Community Service Award, and the Percy Julian Award are due by noon on Friday, March 4, 2022. Nominations for all other Student Leadership Awards are due by noon on Friday, March 18, 2022, which include a variety of awards to recognize the efforts and achievements of our Michigan Tech community.

The recipient of each award will be honored at the 28th Annual Student Leadership Awards Ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday, April 15, 2022, in the Memorial Union Ballroom.

Society of Intellectual Sisters is presenting Bra Show 2022, Mardi Gras! Bra Show is a fundraising event for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and we will be hosting our event on April 2nd. Our event will include a runway show of fun bras that are designed and modeled by our community, there will be food and plenty to enjoy that evening. Video Game Night

Get excited for Video Game Night! The Minecraft build-off will take place in the 2 weeks leading up to the video game night. This will go from 12:00am on March 5th until 11:59 pm on March 18th. SIGN UP! 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes will be given out to the builder’s choice via voting at the video game night amongst the builders. Up to 3 pictures of the builds will be taken and shown off during the event. Sign-ups for the build-off will end at 11:59 pm on 3/4/22. 

Video Game Night is a collab with Fighting Game Club along with Smash Club. The PS4 games include Guilty Gear, Blaze Blue, and Street Fighter. The Smash club will be bringing Nintendo Switches along with the popular game Super Smash Bros Ultimate. We will run a tourney of Smash with sign-ups at the door. We hope to see you there!

This Week in Michigan Tech Recreation

With fun music and traditional aquatic fitness disciplines, Aqua Zumba blends it all together into a workout that’s mixed with cardio, body toning, and is most of all exhilarating. Land-based Zumba dance steps are more exaggerated and slower in the water.

Michigan Tech Recreation is hosting an indoor triathlon for MTU students and SDC members! Unlike a traditional triathlon, which covers fixed distances of swimming, biking, and running, indoor triathlons challenge competitors to race the greatest distance with a fixed time frame. Beginners and seasoned athletes are welcome to participate in the 10-minute swim, 15-minute bike, and 10-minute run! This event is FREE, but you must register in order to participate. Our March seminar is a rare opportunity to train with a world-class Aikido instructor in a small intimate setting. Gleason Shihan will focus on the internal applications of Aiki to one’s Aikido practice. For MTU students & Aikido club members, the full seminar (all four sessions) is $125 OR purchase a single session for $35.

The Husky Connect Mentorship Program is looking for Student Mentors. Mentors will help in aiding first-year incoming students during their transition to Michigan Technological University and the surrounding community by providing direct support and resources that will increase students’ success, sense of belonging, and engagement with the University.
