The Michigan Tech chapter of National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) presents the Bayard Rustin Award annually at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Banquet.

Bayard Rustin was an influential advisor to civil-rights leaders, doing much of the work behind the scenes. He worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to organize the Freedom Rides and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In 2013, Rustin was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The Bayard Rustin Award is presented to a member of the Michigan Tech community that is a major asset to students, faculty, and staff. They frequently provide major support behind the scenes and exhibit qualities of being a servant leader.

Nominations are due by December 1, 2023.

This year’s award will be presented at the 35th Annual MLK Celebration on January 15, 2024.

Our center is launching a newly adopted program called “P.A.W.S.” (Peer Awareness for Well-being and Support). At the end of Spring 2023, Hillside Place (the residence hall)  adopted a brand new set of floor names.  In order to promote a sense of community in the building we are trying to get floor signs made for the building for the first time ever. The RAs and Hillside Place Association (HPA) have started a floor logo design competition and we would like to extend the offer to you all.  The building will be polled on submitted logo designs for each floor.  The winner of each floor design will receive a $50 MTU gift card up to a maximum of $300 based on 6 floors in the building.  Additional details can be found by scanning the QR code or this link.

How to Get Free Tickets

MTU students, SDC Access Pass holders (minimum one-month), and WIBIT Wednesday Pass holders come make a splash with our inflatable pool obstacle course called the WIBIT! Events will be held this fall for current MTU students, SDC Access Pass holders (minimum one-month), and WIBIT Wednesday Pass holders. Test your individual skills on the course or challenge a friend to a race across the obstacles. The course is set up in the deep water and requires users to be able to pass our swim test. See the WIBIT rules and swim test content on our website for more information. There are many different pieces of the WIBIT and each event will have a featured combination.

Potential featured pieces include:

The Step — This piece allows users to climb up onto the course.

The Base — Users must make their way across a horizontal surface. Be careful how fast you move, as it can get slippery!

The Cliff — Users must navigate either side of a slope using the handles and their balancing skills.

V-Connect — Users must use limited footing space to navigate across the horizontal structure.

The Bridge — Users must navigate up and over an arched structure without falling through.

The Slope — Users must climb up a six-foot wall that leads to a slide into the pool water below!

USG Political Affairs Committee is holding an informational session about Israel and Palestine with guest speaker Todd Holmstrom. Todd Holmstrom has a lot of experience in this area. He has held multiple positions for the US state department including acting director of Israel and Palestine Affairs during the first Gaza War in 2008 to 2009. He now is an associate professor at Michigan Tech in the Social Sciences Department. The event will be held Tuesday, November 14th in DOW 641.

Captains Meeting

Captains Meeting on October 24 and 25 from 6pm-8pm. It’s in EERC 103. Only one person from each Broomball team needs to come to one of the sessions. They do not need to attend both. 

The Michigan Tech Friends of the Library will host its annual meeting on Monday, October 23 from 4–6 pm in the east reading room of the Michigan Tech library.

Mark Rowe (Keweenaw County Historical Society) will give an illustrated talk on “The Wreck of the City of Bangor.” The ship became trapped in the ice in 1926 with a load of new cars on board, and heroic efforts were made to drive the cars over the ice to Copper Harbor to save them (the ship was eventually scrapped). Halloween-themed refreshments will be served. Come take a break from studying and hear about a fascinating story of our local area.

A great way to start off Fall Break, join us for a movie on Walker Lawn! Cars will be parked in the CDI parking lot to set up for the movie, and popcorn will be provided! The movie shown will be Spaceballs.

This workshop aims to bridge that gap by providing you with the tools, strategies, and insights needed to transform your commitment to inclusion into practical, sustainable change.

The Michigan Tech LeaderShape® Institute has continued to evolve and has been training leaders from our campus since 1996.

The 2024 LeaderShape® Institute will take place January 3-6 (at the end of winter break) at the Ford Center in Alberta, MI.

There is a minimal cost of $100 for participants to attend the Institute, however, that cost is often sponsored by campus departments and organizations. Transportation to and from the Institute, meals, and lodging are provided.

Participants must be available and are expected to stay for the entire length of the Institute. Applications for the 2024 Institute® are now open!

The 41 North Film Festival returns to the Rozsa, November 2-5, with a line up of over 20 films, special guests, music, and more. The festival is free with something for everyone. Among the many excellent films screening during the weekend is The Elephant 6 Recording Co., a documentary about the music collective that gave rise to such groups as Neutral Milk Hotel and The Apples in Stereo. Featured in the film is math professor Robert Schneider, who was a founding member of the collective. Following the film there will be a reception and music by the band Liquid Mike.

I am the only Democratic club in the Upper Peninsula currently. October 9th will mark 56 years since Che Guevara was executed, bringing an end to a reign of terror by the Marxist revolutionary and international thug. Unfortunately, most students never learn the names of the innocents Che ordered in front of his firing squads or the effect his quest to establish socialism had on the people of Latin America. Instead, Che’s likeness has been idolized, and emblazoned on t-shirts, coffee mugs, and billboards.

To counter the lionizing of this cowardly killer, Young America’s Foundation works with students around the country to tell the truth about Che on the anniversary of his death. “No More Che Day” is designed to educate campuses about Che’s violent life and death, and underscore the faults of socialism.

YAF students will be tabling on DHH Lawn on October 9th from 9 a.m. to noon. In addition, we will have an informational meeting at 7 p.m. in Fisher 231.

Joe is an accomplished speaker, advisor, mentor and board member who values the professional and personal relationships he has built with colleagues throughout the years. Joe holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Michigan Technological University. The American Indian Science and Engineering Society at Michigan Tech invites the campus community to participate in Orange Shirt Day on September 30th.

Originating from Canada in 2013, Orange Shirt Day (also known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation) is a holiday that recognizes the legacy of Indian residential school systems both in the United States and Canada. Under the residential school system, hundreds of thousands of Native children were stripped from their families between the 1880s and the 1970s. These children were brought to federal or religious residential schools, where they were assimilated through abusive and destructive means that were meant to break them of their cultures, languages, and spiritualities.

By participating in Orange Shirt Day, we are recognizing the legacy of the residential school system by honoring the survivors and those children whose lives were taken from them by the residential school systems. So, join us on September 30th by wearing an orange shirt and declaring that “Every Child Matters.”

MATLAB is a programming language that is used in numerous fields, such as engineering, physics, and data analysis. This workshop will help you develop a working knowledge of the language and give you a strong foundation for its implementation in future projects.

The sessions will be held every Saturday (October 7 – December 2) at 2pm over zoom.

If you do not have access to a computer, there will be a designated computer lab on campus that will stream the zoom sessions.

The first in-person tournament for the semester will be Sunday, September 24th starting at 5 pm EST in Walker 109. This will be on Scarlet/Violet cartridges and the format will be monotype singles. Pokemon or moves from the DLC mons will not be allowed since it hasn’t been released for that long. Pokemon that could be transferred from home before the DLC can be used as long as all members of the team share the same type. For more information please contact rgjahn@mtu.edu.

The Great Northern Adventure Race (G.N.A.R.) is a full-day race for extreme athletes looking to test their athletic ability and mental toughness. Combining multiple outdoor disciplines, including but not limited to paddling, cycling, and running; racers are pushed to demonstrate both their problem-solving and mental toughness capabilities. The completion of mini-activities at the end of each leg will award racers clues to their next locations.

You are responsible for your in-race nutrition and hydration.

$25/person or $50/team race fee includes both a t-shirt and post-race meal.

Prizes will be awarded to top finishers.

It’s Homecoming week and this year’s theme is 101 Huskies.

On Tuesday, September 26th from Noon to 1:00PM volunteers will walk and stand with dogs in designated parts of Michigan Tech campus with loveable, friendly doggies to drum up excitement for sporting events occurring during Homecoming (soccer, volleyball, and football). Volunteers with dogs who sign up will receive an email about where to meet on campus when the event nears. The designated area will have a Student Leadership and Involvement sandwich board with information about upcoming sporting events and Homecoming activities.

The Office of Alumni Engagement is offering free professional headshots for students during Fall Career Fair, taken perfectly for your Handshake or LinkedIn profiles. A photographer will take headshots on September 19, 2023, from 12-4 p.m. at the SDC.

Photos will be taken first come, first served. Each student will take (1) test shot and then have a limit of (3) posed shots.

Please sign up if you intend to utilize this free service. The deadline to sign up is 4 p.m. on September 18, 2023. This sign-up is for us to have an approximation of expected crowds and does not guarantee you will be able to get in at that exact time.

Showcase [AI] has all of that and something for everyone. The event is hosted by the Institute of Computing and Cybersystems and the College of Computing from October 4-6, 2023, and will explore the benefits and controversies of AI in Tech.

Everyone is welcome to attend this three-day event, which has interesting demonstrations, esteemed speakers and panels, awards, and a student research poster competition. Join us for an event that will be as entertaining as it is informative, all for free!

Ahoy there, mateys! Get ready to set sail for a day of nautical fun at K-Day this Friday! We’re casting off from the Rozsa Center, and the shuttle will be making its first splash at 11:30 am.

Prepare to ride the waves of excitement because we’ve got a sea of activities lined up for you. From delicious food that will make your taste buds do the “sailor’s jig” to games that will have you hooked, K-Day is the ultimate maritime adventure.

But what’s a nautical event without some toe-tappin’ sea shanties and maritime melodies? Our live music will keep you groovin’ like a sailor on shore leave!

And that’s not all, folks. Brace yourselves for some wet and wild surprises! There might be a few water activities to cool you off and keep the fun flowing. So, bring a sense of adventure and come prepared.

Don’t miss out on this tidal wave of fun! K-Day promises to be an ocean of entertainment, and we can’t wait to see you there, all decked out in your nautical best. It’s going to be a whale of a time!

Fun and games abound at Michigan Tech’s week of Homecoming events. This year’s theme is 101 Huskies (Remember the movie, 101 Dalmatians? See what we did there?) so look for a few events to have a doggy flair.

The Office of Alumni Engagement is offering free professional headshots for students during Fall Career Fair, taken perfectly for your Handshake or LinkedIn profiles. A photographer will take headshots on September 19, 2023, from 12-4 p.m. at the SDC.

Photos will be taken first come, first served. Each student will take (1) test shot and then have a limit of (3) posed shots.

Please sign up if you intend to utilize this free service. The deadline to sign up is 4 p.m. on September 18, 2023. This sign-up is for us to have an approximation of expected crowds and does not guarantee you will be able to get in at that exact time.
