Make a Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others—a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. This annual tradition at Michigan Tech started as a student’s LeaderShape vision in the fall of 2004 and has continued to be our largest day of service each year.

Students, staff, and faculty are invited to register as volunteers for Make a Difference Day. Volunteers will receive a free t-shirt for participating. Start talking about participating in Make a Difference Day with your organization today!

Volunteer registration will close on Sunday, October 20th, 2024.

In Michigan, the last day to register to vote online or by mail is Monday, October 21 (15 days before the November 5th General Election). This means there is still time to register from campus for another precinct in Michigan! If you are not a Michigan resident, check out the voter registration deadlines by state.

Minnesota’s online or by-mail registration deadline has passed, but you can still register in person. Are you traveling for Fall Break? Stop by your clerk’s office to register!

To be eligible to vote you must be 18, a U.S. citizen, and a resident of the state where you register. Some other criteria may apply by state. Before registering to vote, you should check your status in that state, then, if needed, you can go through the registration process. Be sure to do so before your state’s deadline!

Not sure where to register?

If you live in the local area while you attend Michigan Tech, you can register to vote here (at your on-campus or off-campus address) instead of at your permanent address, even if your previous address is out-of-state. It’s up to you. The key is entering the address where you wish to vote on the registration form. You can only vote in one place! Registering at a new address cancels any prior registrations at an old address. In the State of Michigan, the address on your driver’s license must match where you register to vote – if you change one you must change the other. With expanded options for voting early or absentee, you don’t have to be in your voting district on election day to vote.

Join NOBCChE for the Mineral Carbonation Research Seminar. In this seminar, research speaker William Hanson presents on the innovative developments on mineral carbonation. This technology’s capability to sequester CO2 is key to avoiding catastrophic impacts resulting from climate change.

Research presentations by attendees will also be accepted.

The Creative Writing Club and The Writing Center are hosting an Open Mic Night on October 23rd from 6-7pm in the Writing Center (107 Walker). Bring your poetry, prose, music, and more! If you’d like to perform, please sign up so that the organizers can get a general plan for the evening and know how many people to expect. How does a Collegiate Challenge Work?  
Local Habitat organizations, or affiliates, across the country host Collegiate Challenge volunteer groups for weeklong periods, typically over spring, summer and fall breaks.Each location is unique with different group sizes based on local Habitat affiliates’ needs. Habitat affiliates will provide the materials and service work for the week, while you are responsible for recruiting your group, finding accommodations and transportation to and from the site for the week. Most groups arrive on Sunday and depart the following Saturday, but this can vary based on the Habitat location you are working with.

Where will we stay? 
We’ll be urban camping (aka, air mattresses on a church floor). 

Is building experience Necessary? 
Nope.

The Inter-Residence Housing Council is bringing back SafeHouse! A Michigan Tech Halloween tradition since 1988! We are inviting kids in the community to come to campus to trick-or-treat and enjoy some activities put on by residence hall students. Wear your costume and come to campus for an afternoon of fun with community members and students alike. Many residence hall communities will be working together to put on this event, so be on the lookout for more information from RAs!

Have you had the satisfaction of using something you learned in a college math class to solve a thorny problem in one of your major courses? Or have you recently completed an interesting project that required college level math in some way? I want to hear your story!

I am working on a project intended to illuminate the ways in which mathematics connects to other classes that future engineers, computer scientists, physicists, and other STEM professionals take as part of their degree programs. I hope to use your stories to spark curiosity for students who are just starting their college coursework.

The Waino Wahtera Center for Student Success is looking for students who are passionate, outgoing, and great student leaders for their Orientation Executive Staff (OES). These positions spend the summer planning Fall Orientation. We are looking for five students to fill the roles of our team. For more information on each of the following roles, you can go to our website. Please submit applications no later than Monday, October 21, at 5 pm.

Lead OES- The Lead Orientation Executive Staff is responsible for mentoring, role modeling, and assisting members of the Orientation Executive Staff (OES) at Michigan Tech.

Communication OES- is the lead in the design, production, and distribution of key electronic and printed documents about Orientation at Michigan Tech.

Logistics OES- LC-OES is the lead for the creation of O-Week Teams, vehicle and room reservations, and the production of the University Welcome for Orientation at Michigan Tech.

Training OES- is the lead for the creation of training for all orientation team leaders who will work with the incoming class for orientation at Michigan Tech.

Programming OES- is the lead for the creation of O-Week programming for all of the Orientations at Michigan Tech.

There are only two more flu shot clinics this semester so come on out and get vaccinated. We’ll be offering convenient, low-cost vaccinations right here on campus. For those who wish to self-pay the cost is $40 – we will also be accepting insurance so please be sure to bring your insurance card if this applies to you.

Plant and Garden Club will be hosting a free kokedama workshop. A kokedama is a unique way of displaying any plant by wrapping the soil in moss. We need everyone interested to fill out this form to reserve a spot. There will be a maximum of 40 people for this event. In the workshop we will teach you how to make a kokedama, you will pick out your plant, and you will make your very own to keep. Final day to sign up is Monday October 21st.

Are you interested in earning 3 HASS credits in Mexico over spring break? Make it happen!

The First Info Session for the Mexico Spring Break trip will be on Monday, October 21st, at 5:00 in the Academic Office Building, room 201. We will go over some of the basics of the program, including itinerary, deadlines, and registration, and most importantly, answer any and all questions you may have.

We’ll provide some Mexican snacks and candies!

As a Volunteer Usher, you play a critical role in creating a joyful experience at arts events. Led by Rozsa staff, you and other Ushers work together to greet guests, admit folks into the theater, assist with seating and wayfinding, connect guests to venue accommodations, and support effective crowdflow and emergency procedures. Usher roles will be decided as a team at the beginning of the volunteer shift.

October 12th, 9am-6pm, the MTU Forestry club will be holding its annual Woodchuck Games, a TimberSports competition. This is the second time the club has held the games post Covid, and they will be hosting over 30 MTU and MSU competitors. The games will include axe throwing, timber toss, log rolling, underhand and standing block chop, crosscut sawing, canoe racing, and more! All MTU students are welcome to spectate! Lunch will be provided for competitors, but bring a snack if you’re a spectator!

The Open-Source Model of America: Protecting Free Speech in a Connected World

The Student Affairs CommUNITY Education Team and the Bridging Community Series is pleased to announce a campus presentation by Michigan Attorney and a member of the board of directors of the ACLU of Michigan, Michael Naughton. Mr. Naughton is an experienced attorney with over 20 years of practice in the field of civil rights, technology law, criminal defense, and digital privacy. With the arrival of the fourth industrial revolution, Michael has become increasingly engaged in the specialty of emerging technologies and civil liberties. Recently, he was appointed to serve on the Michigan Judicial Council for Generative AI and the Courts Work Group.

The presentation will provide attendees with an introduction to the concept of open-source software, where anyone can view, modify, and distribute source code freely. It explores how this model has contributed to innovation and progress.

Baja is hosting two identical info sessions TODAY, Wednesday October 9th, for interested students to learn more about Baja and how we design, manufacture, and nationally compete single-seat off-road vehicles.
