You don’t have to win, you just have to TRI! Michigan Tech Recreation is hosting an indoor triathlon for MTU students and SDC Access Pass Holders (minimum 1-month)! Unlike a traditional triathlon, which covers fixed distances of swimming, biking, and running, indoor triathlons challenge competitors to race the greatest distance with a fixed time frame. Beginners and seasoned athletes are welcome to participate in the 10-minute swim, 15-minute bike, and 10-minute run! Transition time is provided between events. Event capacity is limited.

Open to MTU students and SDC Access Pass Holders (minimum 1-month) with a valid MTU student ID or SDC Access Pass. Must be 16 years of age or older to participate.

Cost to register: IT’S FREE (but you must register to participate!) Registration opens March 1, 8:00am EST.

Strategies for Success in a new era by Dr. Lynn Mazzoleni

Women in Physics presents a talk on Strategies for Success in a new era by Dr. Lynn Mazzoleni.

Dr. Lynn Mazzoleni is an Associate Professor in Chemistry and specializes in the detailed molecular chemistry of atmospheric aerosol and other environmental complex mixtures. She will discuss her personal experiences working in STEM and her thoughts on her career as a woman. She will explain how, no matter your gender, it is possible for you to be successful and reach your goals. We will have a Q/A session at the end for additional questions and discussion.

Python Boot Camp!

Women in Physics is hosting a Python workshop that is available to anyone who is interested. It is a 6-week course that will begin with the basics of python, and then gradually advance to complex machine learning applications.

This is an amazing opportunity that will allow you to develop your programming skills while learning cutting-edge computational methods. Whether a beginner or an expert, this workshop will have something for you!

USG is hosting a town hall with Dining Services on 3/16 at 7:30 in the DHH Ballroom.  Dining Services will be giving a short informational presentation on their goals and actions recently, and the floor will be opened up to a Q&A session for students afterward.

SDC Spring Break Hours

The Student Development Complex, Gates Tennis Center and surrounding facilities will observe reduced hours over spring break beginning Friday, March 3, through Sunday, March 12. Visit SDC Spring Break Hours to view the schedule.

The SDC will return to regular business hours Monday, March 13.

Camp STAR is a bereavement camp for children ages 8-17 that have experienced the death of a loved one. It is a free weekend-long camp held at Bay Cliff Health Camp in Big Bay, MI. There are traditional camp activities along with grief support and education for children. Camp will be August 10th – 13th.

“Brandon Tatum, a former Tucson Police Officer, co-founder of BLEXIT, author of Beaten Black and Blue: Being a Black Cop in an America Under Siege, and host of the nationally syndicated The Officer Tatum Show and Podcast, has become one of the most prolific speakers and exciting personalities on social media after making a Facebook Video that got over 70 million views. Brandon was also an All-American high school football player out of Fort Worth, Texas, who was featured in the US-Army All-American Game. Brandon accepted a full athletic scholarship from the University of Arizona in 2005. Brandon played at Arizona for 5 years and entered the NFL Draft in 2010. God had other plans for Brandon, and he joined the Tucson Police Department a year later. Brandon served 6 years with the Tucson Police Department. During his tenure, Brandon became a SWAT operator, field training officer, general instructor, and Public Information Officer.”

Two massive earthquakes (7.8 and 7.6) struck Turkey & Syria and caused devastating destruction causing more than 45,000 deaths (and estimated to reach +100k). At Tech we have five professors and three graduate students from Turkey and with the support of Dr. Sarah Green, we started a fundraiser through a reliable NGO. Because the destruction was so massive, the recovery will take months, and any support, and awareness is appreciated. 

Plant & Gardening club will be hosting a plant workshop on the genus of Hoya on March 16th, 18th, and 19th at 5pm in the Bubble Greenhouse on the main campus. The cost for this workshop is $10. Tickets must be pre-ordered so the correct amount of plants are available for everybody. Attendees will receive a 4in Hoya carnosa in a 4in a terracotta pot with species-appropriate soil, and a printed care instruction sheet!
During the workshop, we’ll plant the plants in their new pot and soil, treat any pests, etc., and give attendees more information on this awesome genus of plants!

If so, this workshop is for you. Your ability to pitch greatly improves when you explain your business venture in a persuasive way. What need does your product or service fill? What impact will it have? Communicating your value proposition through the art of storytelling is an important part of connecting with your audience.

Dr. Fiss, who teaches writing, literature, and a course through Pavlis on telling your story, will walk pitch contestants through a process to help them identify key elements of their stories to pitch their innovations. We’ll talk about ways to arrange narrative elements to create a story arc and how to mobilize techniques of storytelling in the service of your innovation.

4th Annual Ebony Gala

Our annual Ebony Gala will be on April 8, 2023, from 7-10pm at the Finnish American Heritage Center. The Ebony Gala is a free community event that highlights NSBE and BSA’s graduating seniors and celebrates black excellence within our community. It is a formal, banquet-style event and there is a limit to the number of attendees.

The Career Closet is a give-away of gently worn business clothing possible to assist students in preparing for Career Fair.

The Career Closet will be held on Saturday, February 18 from 1:00pm-5:00pm and Sunday, September 19 from 10:00am-2:00pm. This event will take place in the Superior Room and Makerspace in the Memorial Union Building.

The Keweenaw Youth for Climate Action (KYCA) is hosting a divestment information session on February 15th from 5-6 pm in Fisher 135. Over the last few years, we have been trying to get Michigan Tech to divest from fossil fuels and are putting on this info session to help inform the students about what we are doing. Mikey Day recently completed his sixth season as a cast member on “Saturday Night Live” after joining the show as a writer for the 2013-14 season.

During his first season as a cast member, Day gained recognition for his wildly popular “Haunted Elevator (ft. David S. Pumpkins)” sketch with Tom Hanks as well as his Donald Trump Jr. impression.

Day is the host of Netflix’s hit baking contest series “Is It Cake?,” which will return for a second season.

Day was a member of the Groundlings comedy troupe in Los Angeles and a cast member on Nick Cannon’s MTV comedy series “Wild ‘N Out” for seven seasons. He was also a head writer on Cartoon Network’s “Incredible Crew,” co-head writer and cast member on NBC’s “Maya & Marty” and co-writer for the 2016 comedy “Brother Nature.” Alongside “SNL” writer Streeter Seidell, Day wrote “Home Sweet Home Alone.”

Tickets are $20 for the general public but are free for students.

The Sustainability Demonstration House tenants invite you to attend our upcoming open house during Carni Week on Thursday, February 9th, from 4-7 pm!

It’s election season! Nominations for Undergraduate Student Government Executive Board positions and At-Large Representative positions are now open. On Monday, February 20th, elections for these positions will open. 

Executive Board positions include President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. At-Large Representatives specifically hold the responsibility of having the entire undergraduate population as their constituency. 

USG is a body of undergraduate students that represents the interests of the student body through advocacy, meetings with members of the administration, and passing legislation. USG is also responsible for allocating the Student Activity Fee for RSOs budgets and providing additional funding through the Opportunity and Reserve Funds. 

USG members attend a weekly body meeting, work on a committee, and serve three weekly office hours. You are strongly encouraged to nominate someone you believe would be a good fit for USG and to vote in the elections that open on Monday, February 20th, and Monday, March 20th!

Registration for the next Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) Open Water SCUBA Course will open next Friday (February 10) at 8 a.m.

The course is conducted over two weekends and includes:

• Ten hours of academic instruction (some coursework to be completed independently),
• Ten hours of confined water training (SDC Pool), and
• Four certification dives in Lake Superior (Marquette).

Upon registration, students will be given all required reading material and paperwork to complete prior to the start of the course. Students must be 18 years old and be able to swim 200 yards comfortably.

Course Dates and Times:

• Friday, March 24 — 5-10 p.m., SDC
• Saturday, March 25 — 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., SDC
• Sunday, March 26 — 8 a.m. to noon, SDC
• Saturday and Sunday, April 15-16, or Saturday and Sunday, April 22-23 — Open Dives in Marquette (exact location and time TBA)

Cost is $575 per person (includes all instruction, fees, and training materials). The deadline to register is March 17.

Delta Phi Epsilon Presents Teeter Totter for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. From Wednesday, February 8th at 8am until Thursday, February 9th at 8pm Delta Phi Epsilon will be Teeter-Tottering outside of the library for our annual 36-hour teeter-totter event for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Worried you are living in a social and political bubble and are not getting exposed to outside viewpoints despite being surrounded by a wonderfully diverse campus? Come to the first-ever International Student’s Forum at Michigan Tech to respectfully share your voice and listen to different perspectives at one of two forum options on Monday, January 30th, and Thursday, February 2nd at 5 pm in the Library East Reading Room. The event will begin with a moderated discussion including participants from the African Student Organization, Indian Student Organization, Bangladeshi Student Association, Nepalese Student Association, Graduate Student Government, among others. Pizza and refreshments will be provided as well as time for more casual conversations. 

All undergraduate and graduate students, of any nationality, are invited to the first-ever International Student’s Forum to respectfully share and hear the viewpoints of their diverse classmates about life, major issues, and culture all over the world.

This event was planned in partnership between the Van Pelt and Opie Library and the Social Sciences International Relations class to increase opportunities for students of varying backgrounds to interact. Supporting Your Peer’s Mental Health

For too many students, mental health is the leading reason they struggle in school or don’t graduate. We know our community wants to help, but you may not always know how. Join Brianna Kratz, Assistant Director of Residence Education and Mental Health First Aid trainer, to learn how to:

• promote self-care with your peers 
• support individual and group mental health
• create a safe space to discuss mental health concerns
• recognize signs that someone might need help
• access other useful resources and training

We hope you will join our campus community in supporting well-being!

Black History Month is among us! It is a time of learning, observance, and, most of all…celebration! Please join the Black Students Association (BSA) in celebrating BHM by contributing to the exhibit in the library. This exhibit will be up all month starting February 1st, and all members of the Michigan Tech community are invited and encouraged to submit any form of art (painting, poem, drawing, poster, etc.) to be included in the exhibit. The theme is all things Black Excellence, Innovation, & Joy. The exhibit is meant to be uplifting, and the theme is intentionally broad to inspire creativity. Don’t worry about being an artist! Just have fun. Submissions can be made to the CDI weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm either anonymously or by leaving your first and last name for credit.

Earn your MI Concealed Pistol License (CPL) through this one-day course brought to you by Michigan Tech Recreation, the SDC Shooting Range, and 906 Tactical. This is the course you must take to get your Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL). This is the premier course in the state of Michigan. The Michigan Coalition of Responsible Gun Owners (MCRGO) course covers what you need to carry a loaded weapon safely in open spaces. Rental equipment is available for an additional fee. Students will receive a copy of the course material on the day of class. No experience is necessary. Class size is limited.

The student organization, SAVE, is hosting an event for Stalking Awareness Month. Students are invited to come to enjoy cookies, cocoa, and crafts while learning about stalking behaviors and resources. Starting on Monday, January 16, 2023, all graduate and undergraduate students over the age of 18 will be asked to participate in the National Sexual Misconduct Campus Climate Survey. This survey is anonymous and only takes about 15 minutes. Students will receive an email with a link to the survey and will have a chance to win prizes.

By completing this survey, it will provide Michigan Tech with important information on campus sexual misconduct prevalence and responses. Preventing and remedying sexual misconduct is essential to creating a safer and more inclusive campus. Title IX is dedicated to making sure that all students have the opportunity to participate in and benefit from our programs and activities.

34th Annual MLK Banquet

Annually, the Center for Diversity and Inclusion and the Michigan Tech chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) host a celebratory banquet with community fellowship and a keynote speaker. This year’s banquet will be held in the Rozsa Center Lobby, on January 16, 2023 at 5:30 pm. 

We are honored to have Dr. Tayloria Adams, an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of California at Irvine this year as our keynote speaker. In 2014, she became the first African-American woman to obtain a PhD in Chemical Engineering at Michigan Technological University.

This year for the 34th Annual MLK Celebration,  The Van Pelt and Opie Library will be featuring an MLK exhibit on display along the curved wall in the Opie Reading Room. Last year, student organizations were encouraged to submit posters in honor of Dr. King’s life and legacy. This year, all students are invited to create a digital or art poster to be displayed in the exhibit. 

The exhibit will also feature an interactive “I have a dream” poster, as well as a dedicated service space for students to write letters to a local community organization and Letters of Love, a nonprofit organization that provides support for families who have been displaced by the turmoil in Ukraine. 

The Center for Diversity and Inclusion will be hosting a craft day on Wednesday, January 11 from 8am-7pm. Students are encouraged to stop by and create their posters for the MLK exhibit. We’d love for you to come join us!!

Michigan Tech is proud to announce that we are now a certifying organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award! The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes the important role of volunteers in America’s strength and national identity. This award honors individuals whose service positively impacts communities in every corner of the nation and inspires those around them to take action, too. Eligible students who record a qualifying number of verified community service hours on GivePulse in the 12-month period between Monday of Week 10 of consecutive Spring semesters will automatically be certified for recognition. Students can learn more about how to qualify on our website.

Due to our status as a certifying organization and previous inconsistencies, we have created a new comprehensive guide on what SLI classifies and will verify as service hours. These guidelines apply to all service hour submissions received on or after January 1, 2023 regardless of when the service hours were performed. The most important addition is that “Submissions must include a detailed description of the service performed as well as a phone number or email address of a verification contact.” To meet the requirements of the PVSA, we must be able to verify all hour completions. We hope with a better understanding of these requirements, students will continue to have a meaningful and significant impact on our communities

The Alley Makerspace is preparing to open for the spring semester and we want you to join our team!

The Alley is a student-led makerspace in the Memorial Union Building. Sponsored by Husky Innovate and Pavlis Honors College, the space was made to be a completely free resource for everyone at MTU to create and innovate. The Alley depends on volunteer coaches to help run the space, train and guide makers, and host fun events for students to learn more about creating. In exchange for dedicating a few hours a week to the space, coaches receive tap access to enter the Alley when it might be closed to other students. The tools in the space that coaches are trained to use include 3-D printers, an electronics/soldering station, sewing machines, a Cricut, a CNC, and woodworking equipment such as a table saw, miter saw, scroll saw, drill press, jigsaw, and basic hand tools.

January 6-8, Sculptora Borealis, two-time national snow statue building champions, will be putting on a workshop on our campus!

They will build an 8x8x8 ft snow statue, while teaching techniques to save time, design amazing snow suspensions, and produce incredible finishes. Just look at this statue they built in just five days!

The workshop is free and open to the public. There are also 10 slots for students to sign up to work alongside Sculptora Borealis and get hands-on experience! 

As exciting as this opportunity is, announcing this during break is not ideal, nor is the fact that the workshop will take place the weekend before the semester starts in 2023, so we could really use your help!
