The Michigan Tech Space Trajectory Optimization Team was ranked 20 in the 7th Global Trajectory Optimization Competition. This Competition is an event that takes place every one-two years over roughly one month during which the best aerospace engineers and mathematicians worldwide challenge themselves to solve a “nearly-impossible” problem of interplanetary trajectory design.
The 7th edition of the competition was organized by Politecnico di Torino – Università di Roma “Sapienza”, Italy. There were 38 participating teams worldwide. The first place in the 7th edition of the competition is the Outer Planets Mission Analysis Group of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, USA.
The documentary film Wings of Angels” will be Shown During Alumni Reunion.
The public can view “Wings of Angels,” a documentary film featuring Michigan Tech mechanical engineering students, in the lobby of the MEEM building during Alumni Reunion. The movie will be shown on the hour, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursday-Saturday, Aug. 7-9.
The Michigan Tech Mechanical Engineering version of the Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Education PACE Engineering Design Competition was held in December 2013.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering–Engineering Mechanics celebrated the December 2013 Fall Semester graduating class Senior Awards Banquet and Order of the Engineer Induction on December 10, 2013 at the Memorial Union Ballroom. Timothy P. Coffield was the keynote speaker for the December 2013 ME-EM Senior Awards Banquet. However, transportation to Michigan Tech was affected by a winter storm causing flight cancellations. So he spoke to the banquet by way of the internet.

Michigan Tech’s Department of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics jumped from 48th to 44th in the US News & World Report rankings published in “America’s Best Graduate Schools” just in time for their 85th Anniversary. As the Department celebrates 85 years of education, innovation, and invention; the increase ranking reinforces the strides made to be a continuing force in Mechanical Engineering at a national and international level.
“I am extremely pleased and proud,” said William Predebon, chair of the department. “This is just fantastic. The ranking is a recognition by our peers and is the result of hard work on the part of our faculty and staff, as well as the accomplishments of our graduates.”
The US News rankings of individual engineering programs in doctorate-granting universities are based on reputation as measured by feedback from department heads or chairs in each specialty, who rate other programs on a five-point scale. The rankings were released March 13, 2012.
