Friday, Aug. 3, at 10 a.m., all kids are invited to “Children’s Laboratory Exploration: Investigating the Lake Superior Food Chain Using a Lake Trout Stomach!” Professor Marty Auer and Joan Chadde, director of the Center for Science, Math and Environmental Education, will lead this workshop that involves dissecting trout innards. Parents and grandparents are also welcome to come to the University Waterfront, near the Great Lakes Research Center. Eighteen middle and high school teachers from across Michigan will explore the geology of the UP during a five-day geology teacher institute. The teachers’ field trips in the Keweenaw will include the Hancock lookout, Centennial rock-collecting site, Brockway Mountain, Hunter’s Point Cobble Beach, and many more. READ MORE
Student Patrick Belling (CLS) and CoPI Associate Professor Paul Ward (CLS) have received $2,000 from the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity for a project, “Assessing Expert Decision-Making Using a Simulated Task in Soccer.”
Barbara Maxwell is one of 20 teachers on a five-day U.P. tour with the help of Michigan Tech and Maritime Teachers Institute. “They’re finding out what sorts of cargos are shipped on the Great Lakes, what port they’re shipped out of, what port they’re shipped into, and how we use these natural resources,” said Joan Chadde. The teachers will learn about water levels, dredging, lock operation, homeland security, ore boats, mines, shipping, lighthouses, Great Lakes navigation and other topics during sessions with the Army Corps of Engineers, the Coast Guard and others involved in Great Lakes shipping. READ MORE

More than 160 people, ages 8 to 80, participated in one of nine scientific excursions on Chassell Bay, offered on Tech’s Research Vessel Agassiz at the Strawberry Festival in Chassell on Saturday, July 7.
