An Afternoon on the Town
1. An Afternoon on the Town
On Saturday from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM the annual Welcome Week event, An Afternoon on the Town, will take place. Start at the Admin and take a stroll down College Ave and into the downtown Houghton area to visit tables and storefronts to see what our local business’ and services have to offer.
Student Activities will be conducting a drawing for students who get at least 35 initials on their raffle cards form the business participants. The top prize is a GoPro Hero 3 plus several other prizes from local businesses.

On Saturday, August 30 at 10:00 PM Pete Lee will be performing at the Rosza Center of Performing Arts. All students are welcome and the event is free of charge with your student ID.

3. K-Day is Almost Here
On Friday, September 5 from noon-4 PM K-Day, or Keweenaw Day, will commence at McLain State Park and our plentiful student organizations will have tables and activities set up for the student looking to get involved. This event is sponsored by Student Activities, Greek Life, Facilities Management, and Athletics.

4. Husky Tae Kwon Do Self Defense Seminar and Demo
Practice self-defense techniques and learn about Husky Tae Kwon Do on Saturday August 30 from 3-4:00 PM in the SDC Dance Room. No experience necessary and everyone is welcome.
For those interested, Husky Tae Kwon Do is a student organization on campus and the first week of practices are scheduled.

5. Learn about the Rotaract Club of Houghton & Hancock
Rotaract is an international service organization for adults ages 18 to 30 that is involved with community and international service projects as well as professional development.

6. IRHC Looking for New Members
Positions are now available and include, but are not limited to, Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, External Affairs, and Programming Chairs. Also, on September 11, 12, and 13, IRHC will be starting a new tradition of a Powder puff football game. Sign ups will begin soon, so watch for posters, and teams of 6 to 10 people can sign up online. Prelims will be held at night on Thursday, September 11, quarter and half finals at night on Friday, September 12, and finals on Saturday, September 13. Also, if staff want to participate, we are looking for referees.

7. Constitution Day Read Aloud
On Wednesday, September 17 from 3:00-4:00 on the Balcony of the MUB and the MUB Circle there will be a Constitution Read Aloud. There will also be complimentary Pocket Constitutions handed out. Volunteer readers welcome – everyone should get a turn to celebrate Constitution Day.On Thursday, September 18, we will have Jeff Kolnick come to campus to deliver the Constitution Day address in Fisher 139 at 7:00 PM, the Title of his talk will be “Our Flexible Constitution – The Struggle for Citizenship”.

8. Student Development Complex Building Hours
The SDC has issued its building schedule for the academic year. It begins Monday, August 25, and runs through Saturday, May 2, 2015. The schedule may be viewed online.
For students and families, avid athletes and novice gym goers alike, Community Programs offers great options to fit your personal fitness level and style. In the studio, pool or on the ice, youth classes will keep your little husky active, engaged and having fun.

The Outdoor Adventure Program and Wellness will be offering a Slack line Clinic on Walker Lawn from 4:00-6:00 PM on August 26, a Paddle Board Demo on August 27 from 8:00-9:30 PM, a Sturgeon River Sunset Paddle on August 28 from 7:00-10:00 PM with a cost if $10, a Prince’s Point Paddle on August 29 from 8:00-10:00 AM, and a Crate Stacking Challenge on August 29 from 5:00-8:00 PM.

3. Reminder: Student Activities Presents Comedian, Jay Black

On Saturday, August 23 at 8:00 PM, comedian Jay Black will perform at the Rozsa Center of Performing Arts.

In 2007, Jay Black left teaching to pursue writing and stand-up full time. Since then, he has headlined at close to 400 colleges, and is APCA’s college comic of the year for two years running.

He has appeared as a comic on Showtime, A&E, Fox, the CBC, and NBC. Jay has also performed at some of the most prestigious clubs in the country, from the Comedy Stop at the Tropicana in Atlantic City to the world famous Los Angeles Improv.

Admission is free with your student ID.

4. An Afternoon on the Town 

On Saturday, August 30 from 11:00 AM-3:00 PM will be the 3rd annual event An afternoon on the Town. Area businesses and services will be present along college avenue and into downtown Houghton to welcome our new and returning students with offers and deals. The event starts at the Administration building and will be led by RA’s in large groups.

Students participants will receive a card with a list of participating businesses and if they get a minimum of 35 signatures they will be entered into Student Activities prize drawing held after the event. Top prize is a GoPro! Winners will be notified by email.

5. MUB Board Hosting PaintU

6. Tutors Needed at Jeffers High School

Since the 2012-13 school year, MTU students have been a great source of inspiration for Jeffers High School students. You have academically helped make a difference by tutoring our students. We thank you.

Jeffers High School (7th – 12th grade) is looking for dedicated MTU students who will commit one hour each week to our after-school tutoring program. (M-F, 3:30 – 4:30 PM)

This is a rewarding volunteer program helping Jeffers students who struggle academically. It is a one-on-one based tutoring program where you will tutor the same student one day each week during the semester.

7. Reminders from the City of Houghton

The following contains important information as well as a list Houghton City ordinances that may be pertinent to students for the Fall 2014 semester and beyond. Back to School Student Cleanup: Dumpsters will be provided, free of charge, August 27-29 and September 3-5. Dumpster locations are 7th Regular Trash Pickup: Weekly, during the entire year, trash cannot be put out any earlier than 7:00 AM (because of potential route changes) on the day of pick up. Trash pick-up is either Tuesday or Thursday. Please refer to the PDF File for specific location or contact Waste Management.

Night parking: No parking on Shelden Avenue between the hours of 2:00 AM and 7:00 AM, year-round. Winter Parking: No parking on any city street or parking facility between the hours of 2:00 AM and 7:00 AM from November 1 thru April 30.

‘Sign Amnesty’ – Students and landlords will be able to place city/state signs and other equipment by the curb for pick-up, with no questions asked. Also includes construction equipment (cones, etc.) through the month of September. You can call the city offices for pickup with no questions asked.

Join us afterwards for an ice-cream social in the DHH Ballroom.

Student News Briefs – August 7, 2014

Khana Khazana-August 8

1. Khana Khazana Serving Iranian Cuisine

Khana Khanaza will present Iranian cuisine that will be cooked by Amir Zandnia and Aref Majdara, graduate students at Dept. of Electrical Engineering. The main dish is Chicken Cutlet. Known as “KuKu Morq” in Farsi, it is a delicious dish from the northern part of Iran. It is a mix of shredded chicken breast, eggs, and onions fried in vegetable oil. A special tomato sauce adds a very pleasant juicy taste. For vegetarians we will cook Kuku Sabzi, which is fried mixture of 4 types of herbs, eggs, and ground walnut.

As a beverage is Sekanjebin. Sweet and healthy Iranian drink made of vinegar and honey, with a refreshing taste of mint.

We will start serving at 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM. The whole meal is $6, cash only. Khana Khazana is going to be serving at the trailer, located in front of the J. Robert Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library.


Golf Etiquette

2. Intro to Golf

For those of you that would like to try out Golf but don’t know where to start, this is for you!  One day only, Student Activities is providing transportation and a group golf lesson on the Portage Lake Golf Course on August 13 from 2:00 – 3:00. Te bus leaves the MUB Bus Stop at 1:30 and returns at approximately 3:30.

To sign up please visit the Outdoor Adventure Program. Student ID and a $5.00 deposit required. You will get your deposit back at the event.


3. Coast Guard Boating Safety Course

A Coast Guard boating safety course will be held on August 14 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM in the MUB Ballroom A1.  This event is open to Michigan Tech and the community.  If you would like to trailer your boat to Lot 27 there will be a complimentary inspection by the Coast Guard personnel and you will receive a sticker for your vessel stating you have passed inspection.

This event is sponsored by the Outdoor Adventure Program and Wellness along with the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
