REMINDER: An Afternoon on the Town

On Saturday, August 29 from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM, join your fellow classmates for An Afternoon on the Town. This annual Michigan Tech event spans from campus, down College Ave., and through the downtown Houghton business district. Area businesses and services will be participating and handing out food, coupons, and other giveaways to showcase what they have to offer. This is a great opportunity to get acquainted with the area and make you feel at home with the community.

You will also have the opportunity to enter into our prize giveaway! The grand prize this year is a GoPro with several other great prizes from area businesses!

Khana Khazana Serves Mexican Food

Mexican cuisine is on the menu at Friday’s Khana Khazana Food Truck in the MUB Circle. Serving is from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM. On Friday’s menu is Pollo Borracho (drunken chicken); chicken, raisins, almonds and green olives cooked in sherry and served over basmati rice; black bean and corn salad, black beans, corn, tomato, red pepper and avocado with red wine vinegar and cilantro; and chilaquiles—a casserole of tortilla chips mixed with eggs and salsa, topped with cheese and served with re-fried beans.


 

Keweenaw Color Run Seeking Volunteers

We want you to help us kick off this years Pride Week at Michigan Tech with the 2015 Keweenaw Color Run! This event is meant to bring students and community members from different backgrounds and cultures together for hours of entertainment and fitness.

The Event is on Sunday September 20th and we are expecting 600 participants to take to the streets to celebrate Fun and Fitness.

We need six Organizations to step up and provide at least six volunteers each for the event in order to sponsor a color station. We expect the six spots to fill up quickly, so if you are part of an organization that is interested, let us know as soon as possible to get a spot.

Time 9:30 till cleaned up (Around 11:45AM)
Cost: FREE if you volunteer!

What you get: Free Cookies, Free event shirts, the opportunity to throw 100’s of pounds of color powder on students and community, Volunteer hours, Satisfaction etc.

Husky Tae Kwon Do Club Practice

Self-Defense Seminar

Come and learn basic and advanced self-defense techniques with the Husky Tae Kwon Do club on Sunday, August 30 from 1-2 PM in the SDC Dance Studio. Wear comfortable clothing. This class is free!

Husky Food Access Network (FAN) Now Open

Do you need food but can’t afford it? Know someone struggling to put meals on the table? No one in our campus community has to go hungry. Husky FAN has many resources available. From our on-campus Pantry in the Hamar House to emergency meal packets you can access 24/7 from Public Safety, we’re working to reduce the stress of food insecurity at Michigan Tech.

Constitution Day September 17

Constitution Day is Thursday, September 17.  Activities will include a student essay contest.  Please watch for further information on the essay question and where to send submissions.  There will be First through Third prizes of gift cards to the Campus Bookstore!
Other activities planned for Constitution Day include:
1:30 PM at the Tech Husky – Announcement of essay contest winners, Husky Pep Band, Reading of the Constitution​, and student government organization booths.
1:30-3:00 PM at the Library Pavilion – Voter Registration with the Houghton City Clerk
Rain location for the above will be the MUB Commons.
There will also be a display of Constitution related holdings in the main hall of the J. Robert Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library.

Campus Bookstore Now Selling FitBit

The Campus Bookstore is now selling FitBit which monitors your daily activities, and  a daily planner that includes the Michigan Tech Academic Calendar.

Also, Women’s Career Apparel is starting to arrive in time for the Career Fair. and we are stocking a daily planner that includes the Michigan Tech Academic Calendar.

This session will discuss the conditions of academic probation and how to get back into good standing. It will also discuss resources and strategies to encourage ongoing academic success.

Time management is really effective self-management. Understand how to avoid time wasting pitfalls, and learn the tools to help you make the most effective use of your time.

Van Shuttle Service On and Off Campus

Did you know that Transportation Services has partnered with the City of Houghton and they are running a free van shuttle service on campus between the SDC, Daniell Heights and the Memorial Union?

In the afternoon, there is also a City of Houghton bus that runs from the MUB to various locations off-campus in Houghton. The Fall schedule will go into effect on August 31, 2015. See Services Offered for more information.

When it comes to Tracey Ashley people are saying the same thing “This woman is funny!” Tracey was a semi-finalist on NBC’s Last Comic Standing Season 5, has appeared as a Co-host on TVLANDS Prime Movies, and performs in comedy clubs and on college campuses across the country!

Throwback Time Machine delivers a night like no other to kick off the year at Michigan Tech.

Photo Scavenger Hunt & Cookout

Explore the Keweenaw and connect with Cru and other first years on an adventurous photo scavenger hunt on Saturday, August 29 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM. Meet in front of Wadsworth Hall at 4:00 PM to begin the hunt and join in the cookout at the Hancock Beach afterwards. For those who cannot make the scavenger hunt, meet in front of Wadsworth Hal at 6:20 for rides to the cookout. There will be beach volleyball, swimming, and food!

Stop by the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) located in the Hamar House (#13) to meet some great people, learn about what we do on campus, on August 25 from 10 AM – 1 PM.

Students from the African Student Organization (ASO), American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES), Keweenaw Pride (KP), National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Society of African American Men (SAAM), Society of Intellectual Sisters (SIS), Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), Women’s Leadership Council (WLC), and Women’s Programming Committee (WPC) will be around to talk to you about their organizations and all the great programming and events they plan throughout the year.


Khana Khazana features Thai Food

Khana Khazana will feature a menu of Thai food from 11:00 – 2:00 PM today in the MUB circle. The menu includes Yum-Aranya, a seasonal salad served with sour and spicy sauce and Kai Yang, a rich herb chicken grilled with sweet tamarind sauce and served with rice.

AFSP Out of the Darkness Community Walk

It is that time of year again when we join the AFSP Out of the Darkness Community Walk. This year, the Baraga County Walk is on Saturday, September 12, beginning with Registration at 10:00 am at the L’Anse Waterfront Park, please consider joining us to create awareness and help eliminate suicide! It is a great fundraiser, with the goal of ending Suicide! It doesn’t get much better than that! As you know I walk in Memory of my Daughter Cami Rose, my personal goal is to help keep one person from having to make this journey. I have gained much knowledge and support from this event/group, it has been amazing, helpful and even healing, just knowing we are not in this alone. Any and all donations are of greatly appreciated.

SDC Building Hours

SDC building hours for the academic year will begin Sunday, August 23 and remain in effect until April 30, 2016. Reduced  hours will be posted during University holidays and spring break. The SDC will be open Labor Day, September 7.

New this fall, public skating will start at 6:30 p.m. on Sundays and will continue to be free for SDC members and Michigan Tech students. All others can skate with the purchase of a day pass or $3 for skating only.

Dance Team Auditions

Do you love school spirit? Do you love to dance? Want to support our Huskies sports teams?

Well don’t miss an opportunity to be involved on campus with a team that supports and performs at most home Huskies sporting events! Auditions will be held on Sunday, August 30 at the SDC Wood Gym. Check-In will start at 12:30 PM with auditions formally starting at 1:00 PM!

Chem talk

Chemistry Career Talk: Patent Agent

Join the Chemistry Department for a career talk with Adrian Pishko on August 17 at 11:00 AM in Chem Sci 215. Adrian graduated with her PhD in analytical chemistry from Michigan Tech in 2002 and completed a postdoctoral internship at Savannah River National Laboratory before pursuing a career as a patent agent at 3M.

Parade of Nations Food Booth Training Sessions

If you are a student organization that plans to participate in the Parade of Nations by sponsoring a food booth at the multicultural festival, you are required to attend one of the following food training sessions:

Food Drive to Support Michigan Tech’s Food Pantry

Husky Food Access Network (Husky FAN) is holding a food drive to gather non-perishable goods for our campus food pantry, which is currently in development. There are drop boxes located in the Admin Building (by the elevators), Library (by the Library Cafe), MUB (by the Campus Bookstore), and SDC (by the Main Desk). If you have any questions about Husky FAN, or would like to volunteer, please contact huskyfan@mtu.edu.

Summer Fitness Opportunities

Michigan Tech Community Programs has a wide variety of classes to fit your summer fitness needs and style. Check out the following great classes!

Open your mind and body to a deeper tranquility through a gently-paced practice of light asana, breath work and meditation practices. Class meets Tuesdays, 7:30-8:30 pm in the SDC Studio.
A comfortable and effective way to strengthen and tone, focusing on low-impact aerobics performed in the water. Class meets MondayWednesdayand Friday, 9:00-10:00 am, and MondayTuesday and Thursday4:30-5:30 pm, in the SDC Pool.
Leave the stresses of the day at the door and get it ready to burn it off with some serious spinning in Power Pedal. Class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:00-7:50 am, in the SDC Studio. Rev it up and burn some calories fast in Spin Express, a 40-minute power spin class that meets Mondays and Wednesdays, 12:10-12:50 pm, in the SDC Studio.
A fun and energetic aerobic routine combining Latin/international music and dance moves to create a great cardiovascular workout. Class meets Mondays, 5:00-5:50 pm, Tuesdays, 5:15-6:05 pm and Saturdays, 10:00-10:50 am, in the SDC Studio.
For the beginner through intermediate adult ice skater, this class meets Tuesdays, 12:00-12:50 pm in the MacInnes Ice Arena.

Our Learn to Skate program offers fun, challenging, and rewarding beginning skating classes for all ages and abilities. Students learn at their own level with others in their age group; classes are available for ages 3+. Includes both a 25-minute lesson and practice time. Lesson are from August 11-September 1, Tuesdays, 5:30-6:50 PM with a cost of $68.00

Did you know the Outdoor Adventure Program, located at 207 East Street across from the campus library, has camping gear, bikes, kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards for rent? For a full list of equipment and rental rates, go to the WEBSITE.

They also have a variety of group trips and clinics that you can sign up for. Check with their rental center to find out what they have coming up!
