Student Organizations: Re-Registration is DUE by Friday, October 7, 5:00 p.m

Each organization is REQUIRED to re-register their student org each Fall semester. You risk losing valuable benefits if you do not meet this requirement by the due date. If you did not receive your re-registration paperwork in your mailbox in MUB 106 you can get a copy from Student Activities in MUB 112 between the hours of 8-5 Monday – Friday.

First Annual Bioblitz Hosted by SFRES

The student clubs within the School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science (SFRES) are hosting the First-Annual MTU Bioblitz! This campus-wide event will be held on October 2nd, from 10-2. In small groups of ~5, students will attempt to find as many living organisms and correctly identify them within the allowed time period, and the winners of each category will receive a prize! Bioblitz battlegrounds include anywhere on the Michigan Tech Campus, including Tech Trails and Husky Bay.

The goal is to bring together the MTU student community of all majors, to enjoy and learn about the immense biodiversity of our beautiful Keweenaw! All are welcome, including families as it is family weekend. Don’t have a group? No problem, we’ll find you one!

Please have students or families meet in the Forestry Building Atrium, bottom floor. Located just up the hill from main campus, for those who haven’t visited before. The event is also listed on involvement link.

Muffin and Coffee Sale 

In honor of breast cancer awareness month, the Rotaract club will be hosting a muffin and coffee sale on Wednesday Oct. 5th 7:45-10:30 a.m. Stop by the Husky statue on your way to class and pick up a muffin and a cup of Biggby coffee. All proceeds will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Derek Thompson, Sr. Editor of The Atlantic, to Speak at the Rozsa

The Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts presents Derek Thompson, who will discuss educational, economic, and political topics in his lecture What Will Election 2016 Mean to YOUR Future on Wednesday, October 5, at 7:30 PM.

Derek Thompson is a senior editor for The Atlantic magazine and the author of its 2015 cover story “A World Without Work” about the future of technology and employment. He also writes the business column for the magazine and contributes to the website on issues ranging from behavioral psychology to the economics of entertainment. Thompson is a weekly contributor to “Here and Now,” the national afternoon news show on NPR, and he appears regularly on CBS and MSNBC. He has served as an adjunct professor at the Columbia Journalism School. He has appeared on numerous lists, including Folio’s 15 Under 30 in Media. Thompson is currently working on his first book about the science of hits in pop culture.

There also will be a Q&A/Talkback: Politics, Education, The Economy, to follow the lecture.  Panelists will include: Carl Blair, Moderator, Lecturer in History and Archaeology;  Patrick Hufnagel, graduate student, School of Business; Emanuel Marcos R Castro Oliveira, Assistant Professor of Economics; Jerrid Burdue, undergraduate student, School of Business; John Griffith, Houghton County Democrats; Cathy Jacobs, Houghton County Republicans

Homecoming Cardboard Boats Bus Shuttle Schedule

There will be free bus shuttles to and from the Homecoming event, Cardboard Boats, located at the Houghton Waterfront Park on Friday, September 30. The event starts at 4:00 p.m.

Shuttles will run from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 pm. The continuous loop route will consist of first stop: Student Development Complex (SDC), next stop: Memorial Union Building (MUB) Bus Stop, destination stop: Houghton Waterfront Park.
