Summer Youth Programs Now Hiring for Summer

Michigan Tech’s Summer Youth Programs (SYP) is hiring for a variety of counselor and support roles for the 2026 season! Each summer, we create a mini college experience for more than 1,000 middle and high school students from across the U.S. and around the world, and we’re looking for energetic, motivated college students to be part of it.
If you’re interested in a meaningful, fun, and resume-building summer opportunity, or just want to learn more, visit our website (mtu.edu/syp/about/employment) for position details, application instructions, and more.

We can’t wait to connect with you!

NEW Summer 2026 Track B Course: UN3013 – Summer in Detroit: Community-Engaged Environmental Science

Are you looking for a summer course that goes beyond lectures and exams—one that lets you apply what you’re learning in real communities, with real impact? If you’re interested in environmental science, sustainability, cities, or working with people, we invite you to consider a new Summer 2026 course: UN3013 – Summer in Detroit: Community-Engaged Environmental Science.

This course offers a unique opportunity to step outside the traditional classroom and learn environmental science through direct, hands-on engagement in the Detroit Metro and Highland Park communities. Rather than only exploring environmental challenges, you will work alongside community partners and middle and high school students to explore how urban environments function and how science can support healthier, more just communities.

Throughout the course, you will co-design and co-teach experiential STEM activities with 7th–11th grade students, serving as both a learner and a mentor. You’ll gain practical experience using tools such as GIS and drone-based data collection, while also participating in activities like tree planting, soil and water testing, biodiversity mapping, and environmental storytelling. More than half of the course is dedicated to experiential, community-based learning, allowing you to build skills through action, reflection, and collaboration.

In addition to developing technical and field skills, this course emphasizes ethical community engagement, environmental justice, and the social and historical context of urban environments. You’ll reflect on your experiences and learning throughout the summer and ultimately create an Essential Education E-Portfolio that showcases your civic engagement, applied knowledge, and professional growth. This portfolio can be a valuable asset for internships, graduate school applications, fellowships, and future careers in environmental science, policy, education, outreach, or related fields.

UN3013 is especially well-suited for students who enjoy hands-on, people-centered learning and are curious about the connections between the environment, equity, and community well-being. No prior experience with GIS, drones, or outreach is required. Just a willingness to learn, engage respectfully with communities, and apply your education in meaningful ways.

More information about the course and registration can be found here or by scanning the QR code on the attached flyer
