Looking to gain leadership experience, build your resume, and give back to the campus and Houghton communities? The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Committee is looking for passionate student leaders to help bring our next day of service to life!
MLK Day is an incredible Michigan Tech tradition where students, staff, and local community members come together to honor Dr. King’s vision through meaningful action. As a committee member, you’ll help pitch project ideas, coordinate logistics, organize student volunteer groups, and shape how Tech honors Dr. King’s legacy.

Make a Difference Day Volunteer Registration
Every fall, Huskies come together to make a real impact—and this year is no different. On Saturday, October 17, join Student Leadership and Involvement for Make a Difference Day, the largest national day of community service. Students, faculty, and staff will team up to support local organizations and community members through meaningful volunteer projects.
What to Expect
Projects will vary depending on community needs and may include painting, weeding, planting, raking, organizing, cleaning, and more. It’s a great opportunity to get involved and make a visible difference in just one day.

Student Leadership and Involvement is teaming up with Visit Keweenaw to make this Plaidurday the biggest one yet! Help us beat Houghton’s own WORLD RECORD of 1,745 people wearing plaid! Grab your favorite plaid and join us for the Keweenaw Plaidurday Photo.
Date: Friday, Oct 2nd, from 1-2 PM
Where: Houghton High School Football Field (1603 Gundlach Rd)
The photo will take place at the Houghton High School football field at 1:30 PM. The gates open at 1:00 PM, and you are encouraged to arrive early to participate in the pre-photo activities. Limited shuttle transportation will be located behind the Rozsa Center on Cliff Drive at 12:40 p.m. and 1:05 p.m.

Missed National Voter Registration Day?
There is still time to register before election day on Tuesday, November 3rd! Every eligible voter should check their voter registration status to ensure their address is up-to-date and that they are still registered. To be eligible to vote, you must be 18, a U.S. citizen, and a resident of the state in which you register. Some other criteria may apply by state.

The deadline to register online or by mail in Michigan is October 19th.
Not sure where to register?
If you live in the local area while you attend Michigan Tech, you can register to vote here or at your permanent address, even if your previous address is out-of-state. It’s up to you. In the state of Michigan, the address on your State of Michigan driver’s license must match where you are registered to vote. If you change one the other will also change automatically with the state of Michigan. However, student voters are permitted to change their address back whenever they choose.
Remember – you can only vote in one place! Registering at a new address means you cannot vote at any previous address.
Voting in-person isn’t your only option. If you are registered at an address far from campus, you may be able to vote early or vote absentee depending on your state of residence. With expanded options for voting early or absentee, you don’t have to be in your voting district on election day to vote. We will elaborate on these options in future weeks. For today, we just encourage you to verify that you’re registered in the place where you are eligible and you would like to vote!

Career Fair is right around the corner! Join us on Tuesday, Sept. 29, from noon to 5 p.m. at the SDC to chat with recruiters and industry reps. Interview Day takes place across campus on Wednesday, Sept. 30. More information is available on the Career Services website.

Career Fair OEM Networking Presented by the Four Wheelers at Michigan Tech
Career Fair Prep! This event is designed with a dual purpose to bring together students, alumni, and industry partners to showcase their companies and projects and to engage with highly motivated engineering students in a more personal environment than a traditional career fair. The Four Wheelers Club’s extensive alumni network reaches across many automotive and engineering employers. Students learn about different companies, explore career paths, and receive advice on internships, co-ops, and full-time positions.

If your article is accepted for publication, you will work with upper-division students on revising and editing your piece for appearance in the journal. Students who complete the suggested revisions will see their article through to publication.
There is a $100 publication scholarship for students whose articles are published!

The yearly Institute of Computing and Cybersystems (ICC) Student Poster Competition will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Oct. 2 in the Longyear Commons of the H-STEM Complex.
Register your student research poster before the deadline at 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 28 to participate.
Winners in undergraduate and graduate categories will receive a scholarship prize. Please visit the ICC’s Student Poster Competition page for requirements, judging criteria, and additional information.

“How AI Is Powering the Next Leap in Manufacturing” Keynote: Pavan Muzumdar, COO Automation Alley
Please join the Computing [MTU] Showcase on Thursday, October 1, at 6 p.m. for Pavan Muzumdar’s keynote presentation, “How AI Is Powering the Next Leap in Manufacturing.” This public talk on the present and future of engineering and manufacturing and how AI can help solve existing bottlenecks in these sectors.
The talk will take place in Fisher Hall Room 138 and is free and open to all. An informal fireside chat and discussion with Dean of the College of Computing, Dennis Livesay, will follow at 7 pm. Food and coffee/tea will be served.
Pavan Muzumdar is the chief operating officer of Automation Alley, Michigan’s digital transformation insight center. Blending his 20-plus years of experience in executive leadership roles with his love of financial analysis and entrepreneurial endeavors, Pavan brings a people-focused, fundamentals-based analytical approach to his work.
Computing[MTU] Showcase free screening of: “Tron”
Please join the Computing [MTU] Showcase, Art in Silico, and the MTU Film Board for a special screening of Tron (1982) on Tuesday, September 29, in Fisher 135.
The film stars Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, a computer programmer and video game developer who is transported inside the software world of a mainframe computer where he interacts with anthropomorphic programs in his attempt to escape. Tron was one of cinema’s earliest films to use extensive computer-generated imagery (CGI).
Doors open at 6:30pm (with pre-roll videos about the making of Tron).
Movie starts at 7:00pm.
Entry is free. Refreshments are available for purchase.

PADI Open Water SCUBA Course!
Dive in with us! Register now for our PADI Open Water SCUBA Course!
This PADI Open Water Diver Course is conducted over two weekends and includes: 10 hours of academic instruction (some coursework to be completed independently), 10 hours of confined water training (SDC Pool), and certification dives in Lake Superior (Marquette). Upon registration, students will be given all required reading material and paperwork to complete prior to the start of the course. Class size is limited.

The SDC Shooting Range is offering a variety of programs this fall designed to help you build your skills, gain confidence, and enjoy time on the range!
Whether you’re interested in earning your Concealed Pistol License (CPL) or looking for a fun way to practice and compete, there’s an opportunity for you. Participants of all experience levels are welcome, with courses and programs designed to provide a safe, supportive, and engaging Range experience.

This fall, discover new ways to get moving with Aikido, Rowing, and Tumbling. Each program offers a unique opportunity to build skills, challenge yourself, and have fun along the way!
Rowing: Session 2
Get moving and build strength and endurance with an energetic rowing workout designed to challenge participants at their own pace.

Important Information for Parents/Guardians for program registration:
To register your child for aquatics programs this coming fall, you’ll need to:
1. Create your account *Note: Due to system constraints, only current students, faculty, and staff may use an MTU email. All others must use or create a different email address to create an account.
2. Add your children as your affiliates (with their date of birth)
3. Register your child through their affiliate profile (profile options in the top right corner), not your own, for any program with an age requirement
This ensures accurate participant information and correct age group placement.

Volunteer responsibilities may include assisting with event setup and teardown, moving tables, chairs, tents, displays, and supplies, helping employers set up their booths, and providing general event support as needed. This is a great opportunity to gain event experience, connect with employers, and contribute to one of Michigan Tech’s largest annual events.

Help us make the Career Fair a success! The event takes place on Tuesday, September 29, from 12:00-5:00 at the Student Development Complex. We need people for a wide range of shifts throughout the day – some are more forward-facing, some are operational, but all help us keep the high standard of event excellence that makes Michigan Tech stand out!
Support the Keweenaw Color Run!
Join us for the 2026 Color Run hosted by Circle UP Keweenaw! (formerly known as Keweenaw Young Professionals). This year’s run will again be in collaboration with Visit Keweenaw, as part of the many exciting events in the Canal Colors Festival during the first weekend in October.
Help is needed for set-up, clean-up, running color stations, registration, and assisting with course safety. Volunteers help ensure the event is run smoothly, safely, and is a good experience for all participants.
